Title: Report: Toshiba May Withdraw HD DVD Video Format

TOKYO  —  Japanese electronics maker Toshiba might withdraw its HD DVD next-generation video format, Kyodo News agency reported Saturday.

The report cited unidentified individuals from the industry as saying Toshiba Corp. is reviewing its operations, with the timing of the withdrawal to be decided later, depending on U.S. demand for its HD DVD products and other factors.

Calls went unanswered at Toshiba Corp.'s Tokyo office, which was closed for the weekend.

HD DVD has been competing against the Blu-ray technology, backed by Sony Corp., other makers and five major Hollywood movie studios.

Recently the Blu-ray disc format has been gaining market share, while Toshiba has been forced to slash prices to sell its HD DVD machines. A Toshiba pullout would signal the almost certain defeat of HD DVD to Blu-ray.

This is  why I am the last person to pick upon new technology, I am convinced every new tech development is destined to be Betamax revisited.

Sony Entertainment puts all their movies on Blu Ray since it was developed by Sony Electronics.  Paramount and a couple other big movie houses announced they would no longer be releasing HD DVDs and would be using Blu Ray.

It seems like the choice has already been made.  If I buy a new DVD player, it will most likely be Blu Ray.

I believe I saw in a commercial that Blu-Ray will also play regular DVDs as well. Oddly enough my grandparents bought a Betamax back when it first came out. One of my childhood memories of them was visiting them up in Chicago and watching their Beta movies.

After the Betamax and PS3 debacles they needed a hit. This might even help PS3 sales; but still...

One of the girls I work with at Target has a PS3 but had no idea that it could play Blu-Ray DVDs. I don't have a PS3 myself, I've always been more fond of the Xbox 360. I have that and a Wii. The PS3 is on the list of things to get one day but I'm in no rush to get one.
