Egg prices plunge most in more than 70 years in reversal from huge spike

After rapidly rising egg prices made headlines across the country earlier this year, new inflation data show they are now falling at a jaw-dropping pace.

From just April to May, egg prices dropped a massive 13.8% on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the latest consumer price index numbers released on Tuesday. That was the biggest one-month decline since January 1951 — some 72 years.

The main driver of the increase in egg prices was the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as bird flu. Since 2021, bird flu killed off tens of millions of laying hens, or about 5% of the country’s total chicken flock.

Now bird flu has gotten back under control. Additionally, demand has fallen for the shelled products, particularly because people were buying fewer eggs earlier this year because of the sticker shock, according to CNN.

“While the egg market in 2022 was dominated by the bird flu, the market this year has been dominated by its absence,” said Karyn Rispoli, senior egg market analyst at Urner Barry.

The May 2023 average price is still about double the January 2021 average price.

A former regional manager for Starbucks was awarded $25.6 million on Monday after a federal jury in New Jersey unanimously found that she had been fired because of her race. Shannon Phillips, who is white, received $25 million in punitive damages and $600,000 in compensatory damages. She is reportedly seeking further compensation for lost wages.

Phillips was terminated in 2018 in response to backlash against Starbucks after two black men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, were arrested while waiting for a business associate at one of the many Philadelphia locations she oversaw. Employees at the Center City Philadelphia cafe called the police on the pair after they asked to use the washroom but hadn't ordered anything.

Phillips claimed in her 2020 lawsuit that her firing had been racially motivated. She said she was targeted despite not having had any direct influence on the decision to call the police.

Her allegations were backed up by the testimony of Paul Sykes, the black supervisor of the employee who made the 911 call that day. Sykes argued that the fact he did not face any disciplinary action while Phillips was let go showed that Starbucks had acted in a manor that exhibited racial bias.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles 'defund the police' City Councilmember Curren Price was charged with 10 counts of embezzlement, perjury, and conflict of interest, the latest of local public officials to be accused of corruption from state or federal prosecutors.

In 2020, in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis, Price launched a proposal to cut $150 million from the LAPD and to reallocate those funds to youth services for black and brown communities. He also championed the creation of a social services unit to respond to non-emergecy calls, and fought to eliminate the enforcement of traffic laws, stating that they disproportionately affected black Los Angelinos.

The district attorney’s office alleges that Del Richardson Price, the councilmember’s wife and founder of consulting company Del Richardson & Associates, received “payments totaling more than $150,000 between 2019 and 2021 from developers before he voted to approve projects.”

Price is also accused of failing to list income Richardson Price received on government financial disclosure forms.

The 10-year veteran of the City Council was charged with five counts of grand theft by embezzlement, three counts of perjury, as well as two counts of conflict of interest, according to a criminal complaint.

Cocoa prices have soared 44% over the last nine months to seven-year highs as the global cocoa bean deficit worsens for the second consecutive year.

"The cocoa market has experienced a remarkable surge in prices … This season marks the second consecutive deficit, with cocoa ending stocks expected to dwindle to unusually low levels," S&P Global Commodity Insights' Principal Research Analyst Sergey Chetvertakov told CNBC via email.

Cocoa prices in New York surged more than 3% to $3,253 per metric ton — the highest since May 2016. The commodity last traded at $3,182 in the late US cash session on Tuesday.

There is a global cocoa shortage. That means less chocolate.
