Hello from Canada!

Hi all! I'm Dest and I'm a Canadian! America's neighbor to the north.  :) I'm 20, and I live in Toronto, Ontario. I define myself politically a Progressive Conservative leaning statesman and a Social Market Capitalist. I despise Obama for trying to turn America into a European style Social Democracy, I love Peter MacKay (Canada's Minister of Defense) because he's just a bad ass.  :-) I'm incredibly disappointed with all the 2012 GOP candidates as everyone else is, and I'm hoping that Gov. Daniels or Gov. Christie will run in 2016.

I love debating history, mostly WWII (Rommel is my favorite general), politics, economics, current events, etc. I'm sure I'll fit in pretty well here!  :)

Welcome!  I hope you enjoy chatting here.  If you don't mind me asking, what is a Progressive Conservative?  Is it an actual political party in Canada, or is it just your personal political philosophy?

They were a political Party in Canada, but they no longer exist.

Christie is a N.E lib. Daniels is just, I don't know, but I don't trust him. They can hardly be called conservative by any stretch of the imagination.

Welcome!!  I suspect that what the members are reacting to is Canadian politics are slightly different than the US.......most of your CA party members tend to be left of "mainstream conservatives" here, particularly on social, and government encroachment issues, however, we have members from across the political spectrum..........even at least one other Canadian, who hails from the Maritimes......

Christie is liberal on some social issues (gay marriage, gun control), and Daniels has been all over the board on some fiscal policy items, not reliably conservative......

Chris Christie just vetoed NJ's same sex marriage bill though. With regard to Daniels, I was relying mostly on hearsay. I was told by a friend in Indiana that he was a good fiscal Conservative, but I guess I'll have to double check that now.

It sorta depends on where you start from.....conservatives in the US aren't a homogeneous group (not unlike Canada), and those who come from northeastern states (and the Pacific coast) tend to be less conservative on some issues, just to stay in office.......when it comes to a national leader, we tend to become rather picky........we've had our share of "country club Republicans" in the White House over the years, and the results have not always been good (from our prospective).

To be honest, I always liked Daniels, however, some of his actions were called into question when his name popped up as a possible candidate.....you likely know more about him than I do.

Case in point, Bush 41.  He might have been from Texas when he was elected, but he's a Northeastern "moderate" Republican through-and-through.

I agree on that. Liberals always portray Bush as some right wing lunatic, when in actuality his domestic policy was pretty moderate. The only crazy thing he did was invade Iraq when it didn't need to be, and then he provided horrible justifications for it when there was plenty of good evidence to support his case.

Actually, I was referring to his father, George H. W. Bush, but the same could almost be said of Bush 43 on many issues (NCLB, Medicare Part D, TARP, etc.)
