Last weekend’s events honoring veterans of all wars had a particularly potent impact on the many Vietnam vets and others who attended behind and inside the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building. We saw grown men touched to tears while touching the PBR (Patrol Boat River) or touching the dramatic wall replica that travels around the country.

We heard local Vietnam vets, such as Gene Campagna, casually counseling others on how to sign up for benefits, even if they think they don’t need any help. We saw older veterans being pushed in wheelchairs by their loved ones, proudly wearing their service caps and looking a bit grim while remembering so much of the unspeakable.

When Tom Wright, a local Vietnam survivor, said that when he heard the Huey helicopter fly over his and Chris Mueller’s house last week, it made a sound he hadn’t heard in more than 40 years. Wright suddenly got spooked and had flashbacks invading his mind and emotions.

Wright said, “My nervous system reacted before I realized what I was hearing. I moved real close to a wall, and then went out to see it.”

While the three of us hung out around and touched the Huey, Wright explained that the “FNGs” sat in the unpadded seats nearest the outer edge. When I asked what FNGs were, I got the real answer “F***g New Guys.” The newbies on the outside, of course, took the first ammunition shot at the helicopter.

Wright was stationed in Dong Ha in Quang Tri province where few cargo planes or helicopters flew nearby to drop provisions. They lived on MREs, fish some guys learned to grab out of the rivers and monkeys they shot. He added that a prized part of the “barbecued” monkey was when “someone got to scoop the brains out of its head. We were hungry, we would eat anything, and we did.” And here we are in beautiful Sonoma.

Odd - you would think that the second-most decorated whatever in history would be afforded better foodstuffs, or at least his Seal Team (so secret he was in it before it existed) would have better chow.

Eat monkey and die, Tom, scumbag valor-stealing antisemite asshole.

40 years before he heard the sound of a Huey? BS There were Huey's flying all over the area back in the late 70's as part of the LA county fire department and the National Guard. If he didn't hear one its because he was passed out drunk for most of his life. I heard Huey's here in Iowa at least twice a year while he was supposedly off to the Nam on his super secret squirrel missions. Now granted I live not far from Offutt AFB and the Guard unit here in town wasn't no more then 6 blocks to the east at the time but having Huey's around in the 70's and the 80.s wasn't so uncommon for his area. As close as Sonoma is to San Fransisco there is no way that he missed hearing a Huey flying over head.

An article about real veterans turned into another TiTtyboy fantasy.

Sounds like something you'd read in nutcase nadin's East County blog.

Let's not forget the small detail of the sound of a Huey H-1 making him grab the wall and slink outside for a look.  That's some stupid ass Hollywood bullshit that they have tried to feed us since the 70s.  The only reason TiT would have flashbacks of taking cover from a Huey is if he was fighting for the NVA or VC.

And in a bazillion DUmp posts, he never once mentioned chowing down on monkey brains.

You're correct...the first MRE I ever saw was around 1981.  Hell, in some locations we were still eating Cs that had been in refrigerated storage into the mid-80s.  TioT's story is total macho grande bullshit.

In 1961,'62 and 63 the First Air Calvaryand others  held war games/manuvers "Swift Strike I, II and III" in my area. I was still in high school but followed the fellows around and made trips to the country stores for them. It was all fun and games for us teenage boys......and the helicopters and "Mohawks" used our pastures several times.

I hear them daily.

It would be amusing to see his head tilt when he saw a UH-1Y and it wasn't making the pop sound.

When the Bushes were in office we heard some kind of choppers heading up to the summer residence every few months.    They flew way up there and unless one was outside seldom heard them.

The ones we hear inside a building are either Police or private choppers doing Aeriell photography or surveying the area.   These fly close to the ground and make a racket of noise.

Only been up ONCE on a tour of NYC back in 1969.  Darnedest feeling, the machine had a bubble glass front and seats for 3.  The chopper did not leave the earth, if felt like the earth was sinking below me, flight restrictions at the time many buildings were higher then we were.    Pure magic for me, so different from a small private plane.

Our small town airport has in good weather all kinds of gizmo's flying just above tree top, ultra lights and home made in the garage contraptions with Snow Machine engines or water ski engines for propelsion.   Now this is scary.   Some of these pilots fly so low one cannot sunbath nude on their decks.   { yes I know that would be a sight to make them crash into the neighbors house. }

I would be more afraid of a neighbors who builds these things and their teenage kid on drugs decides to buzz the block then any Military chopper.

This poster sounds like Nads who when hearing an ambulance has a flash back to repelling down 150 feet in a lightning storm to take vitals of dead people.

Poor Titty boy would just implode here. 2 AFS,  NASA security, 3 helicopter training schools, a warbirds museum along with being between I-95 and the main drag from Orlando to the beaches. Both of which are used for navigatiion means we are ate up with whirlybirds. A day not hearing helicopters is unusual.  He'd freak and wet himself. Not to mention this.

TiT, you forget, field-tested the first MREs while he was working as a Marine/SEAL and pulling shotguns on Secretaries of Defense.

Are monkey brains in MREs? Or are they just in the ones that Tom field tested?

I suspect TiT is having a flashback from watching the film Faces of Death while stoned.

(For those who don't know, FoD is mainly faked footage with some actual clips obtained from newsreels mixed in. The scene involving dining on monkey brains straight from the critter's skull is fake)

On www.Airliners.net they list 1,728 UH-1 helicopters around the world that they have pictures of.  Some of the known operators in California are

1, The Califonia Department of Forestry

2. The US Army

3. The US Air Force

4. The United States Marine Corp

5. San Bernidino County

6. Kern County

7. The California Army National Guard - Ft Hunter Ligget is on about 4 hours away to the South

8. The California Highway Patrol (Makes one wonder how TiT missed those Hueys)

9. The Santa Barbara County Fire Department

Well that is true but then again I bet he took flying lessons from Tom Cruise and didn't wear a helmet when they went up for that joy ride in his F-14 so he can't hear to well
