WASHINGTON, D.C. -- ...
In his lengthy statement, the Ohio congressman said, "The President and Vice President lied and 4,000 of our soldiers died. The President and Vice President lied and a million innocent Iraqis died in a war that'll cost us two trillion dollars while people here in the states are losing their jobs, their health care, their homes, their dignity. Lies are weapons of mass destruction. Lies are also an impeachable offense. Monday, January 28th is the State of the Union. We already know the State of the Union, it's a lie."
After minor commotion on the floor and opposition by Republicans, the ostracized presidential candidate moved to have his words taken off the record.
Kucinich said, "I ask unanimous consent to withdraw the offending words, to the end that they be stricken from the record and that I be permitted to revise and extend my remarks for the record."
Last April and November, Kucinich almost had the house debating the impeachment of Vice President Cheney....

8. I'm thinking that Dennis got a phone call from the leadership
and he was told to withdraw his comments.
He's up for re-election and has been said to be having trouble.
I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THIS MAN IS BEING SHUT UP.
Oh if we could only figure out how to make you shut up................then again, it would be a great denial of our humor.

16. It needs to be said and it needs to be IN THE RECORD.
What a bunch of crap or maybe I just don't understand politics but I think it needs to be in the record if only so future Americans can note that some brave souls did try to prevent the aberration this nation will become

17. Sounds like a parliamentary move
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 03:55 PM by Strawman
According to House Rules:
"C. Conduct During Debate:
Words Taken Down: A Member should avoid impugning the motives of another Member, the Senate, the Vice President or the President, using offensive language, or uttering words that are otherwise deemed unparliamentary. These actions are strictly against the standing Rules of the House and are subject to a point of order. This is made by a Member "demanding that the gentleman's (or gentlewoman's) words be taken down." If this happens in the Committee of the Whole, the Committee of the Whole rises and the Speaker must return to the Chair and rule on the propriety of the words used. In the case of remarks regarding the Senate and the President, the Chair may take the initiative and admonish Members for unparliamentary references.
Often the offending Member obtains unanimous consent to withdraw the inappropriate words or the demand is withdrawn before the Speaker rules and then the Member proceeds in order. However, if the Member's words are ruled out of order, they may be stricken from the Congressional Record by motion or unanimous consent, and the Member will not be allowed to speak again on that day except by motion or unanimous consent (clause 4 of Rule XVII). "
Maybe that was his way of calling them liars in the floor of the House while remainign within the rules of appropriate conduct. In any case he said what he meant to say and everyone knows he meant it, retraction or not. Good for him
.
They will never understand that whole thing about breaking of the laws and such. Then again, I enjoy the entertainment factor to much.

So, today Dennis withdrew his right on comments that Bush/Cheney lied
us into war. He said it during his one minute speech. There's a link to the video here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...
I've never seen him do such a thing. What is going on? Thoughts?
How can we support him?
Here's his contact information:
Washington Office
2445 Rayburn HOB
Washington, DC 20515
Phone (202)225-5871
Fax (202)225-5745
We cannot, imo, allow Dennis to be silenced. What can we do?

It looks like he took down his words because he broke the rules.
ON EDIT: You're not supposed to use words like lie and chimp when speaking of the Lying Chimp from the floor.

6. He called Bush/Cheney liars, correctly. Per House rules
that accusation, however accurate, had to be withdrawn as I understand it.

3. He made his point. Whether or not it is in the "official" record is moot.
Had he not moved to withdraw his remarks, I'm sure we would have seen most Dems joining repukes in demanding a censure

8. F#ck that. I think we should call him in support.
Ever notice how the "rules" are only invoked when the truth is inconvenient?
(I don't even want to think about how many Dems would move to censure. It's just too awful.)

Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 04:00 PM by Strawman
By formally retracting them. There are rules that govern speech on the floor of the House. He can call them liars, ****wads, assholes and anything else off the floor and off the Congressional Record.

17. You know, I understand that the retraction doesn't erase the statement.
But, it is still important.
Public gestures matter.
Having no support from your party matters.
Rewriting the truth matters.
I want that IN the Congressional Record so when my kids ask what I did to prevent the hell they have to deal with, I can show them
.
Excuse me.................what the hell did you do today??

Sending good thoughts to Dennis Kucinich. He is a big man to undertake that which no one else dare touch.
Maybe some white light or pictures of hands would help......
