I know. I know; it's another one of my marathon threads...

...but this one is so-o-o-o-o worth it.

Basically, the Ku Klux Klams are starting to grate on everyone's last nerve.

They have only their own clit-clique and the brony Scootaloo to hold the line against male oppression of sexual objectification of women that contribute to the consumerist capitalist rape culture.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue : 50 Years of Women's Objectification

Quote
Sports Illustrated will be celebrating 50 years of its annual Swimsuit Issue and I think we can all agree now that it is one of the most blatant exemples [sic] of women’s objectification in mainstream media.

Over the years, the models on the covers have been wearing less and less fabric ; it’s not even trying to pretend it’s about fashion anymore. It already had nothing to do in a sports’ magazine aimed at men in the first place, now it’s barely feeding off the momentum of each year release and the so-called making of new supermodels.

The very treatment of the women’s image is terrible. The first covers and spreads in the 60s and 70s had a great focus on the landscape and featured some actual fashion. Now the shots are way more focused on the models, which are nearly naked and are featured taking off what is left on their body.

Hm-m-m-m...

What cultural phenomenon occurred in the 60s and 70s that made women more sexually available?

And who could have ushered-in such a cultural shift?

Quote
Quote
We hear all the time how Tyra Banks was the first Black woman to make the cover of the Swimsuit Issue ; well guess what ? She is the only one to date, apart from Beyoncé who appeared on the 2006 covers. And no Asian, no South-Asian, no Native.

To objectify or not objectify? That is the question.

What's that old joke again?

Naked white women is pornography.

Naked black women is a documentary.

If objectification were actually the issue I don't see how adding more women of different races is a cure for that.

Quote
Quote
Also what’s up with shooting a model in ****ing Antarctica ? Kate Upton has commented on how the shoot was horribly hard; she said she experienced eyesight and hearing lost afterwards because her body was freaking shutting down. Worse, the results were so underwhelming : it looked like it was shot in front of a green screen. Not even worth almost killing a model. Oops.

I assure you, there are 18 year old Army privates enduring a lot more for a lot less.

Quote

http://www.ixdaily.com/drop-your-skirt/sports-illustrated-swimsuit-issue-50-years-womens-objectification

Just thought the other (progressive) side of this issue deserved an OP of its own.

And I fully expect for one of the usual suspects to start posting pics in here to antagonize feminists, so if you do, don't think you're being original or clever. Using images depicting objectification to harass feminists isn't new or intelligent.

1. I never understood the point of the SI swimsuit issue.

It has nothing to do with sports. Why do they even make it (other than for the obvious pubescent titillation)?

Quote

81. but some men do think women are sport...

to be hunted and caught, sometimes wounded, and not quite fully human - like an animal.

Quote

128. And visa versa

Isn't life grande?

Quote
Whisp (22,014 posts)

133. No, there is not a vice versa. n/t

Conservative ladies NEVER objectify men. 'Cause y'all are good girls.

Amirite?

And then they prattle on about why won't SI feature female athletes doing athletic things and not being hawt and stuff which then has this well-intentioned reply that is wholly lacking in self-awareness.

Quote
sheshe2 (11,970 posts)

50. This is the power and strength of a woman athelete.

[pic of a Jackie Joyner-Kersey]

[excerpt of article about Mrs. Kersey.]

This is how she was portrayed on the cover of SI

How SI has deteriorated when picturing women as athletes. To now picking models as eye candy and objects. Is SI the new Hustler Magazine! It is meant to titillate and sell as many magazines as possible. It's humiliating.

WAIT JUST ONE ****ING MINUTE!

If any non-liberal had posted that picture -- ESPECIALLY IN CONTEXT OF AN OP THAT INCLUDED COMPLAINTS OF RACIAL UNDER-REPRESENTATION -- they would be pilloried and hounded out of town for depicting a black person throwing what is essentially a spear.

The screams of, "RACISM!" would be deafening and sustained until SI bowed its head in the public forum bearing tribute of gold encrusted sensitivity training.

Don't tell me that isn't exactly how these dog whistling assholes wouldn't have portrayed that picture.

And then Lumberjackoff Jeff gives them what-for...

4. See? The problem isn't that the issue is flame bait, it's that you want to pick which flames to bait

Is there anything that you'll post in this thread that you haven't already said in the other?

As far as Kate Upton goes, I suspect she was paid more than the average crab fisherman gets for the same discomfort.

Quote
Scootaloo (9,735 posts)

12. That's not a great argument

"So what if you damn near died so we could center-frame your tits at the south pole? You got paid didn't ya?!"

Oh, **** you!

If some chick were to saver her money, start a small business and make an equal amount of money supplying tangible goods and services you assholes would be screaming that she be taxed at a starting marginal rate of 90% for be one of the evil rich.

Quote
lumberjack_jeff (27,333 posts)

16. I suspect that Kate Upton's definition of "damn near died!" isn't the same as mine.

If they didn't tell her or her publicist that they'd be shooting swimsuit photos in antarctica, then yeah, you have a point, but if she simply hadn't brushed up on her geography recently, then no.

29. The rest of the Today show quote might be illuminating.

Quote
“I could really only do it for a minute and then everyone would come running and throw blankets on top of me and they would build me like a little blanket cave,’’ she said. “I really went all out on this. We went there thinking we might not even get a shot, and came back with the cover.”

In between shivering in a bathing suit, Upton was able to soak up the Antarctic scenery.

“It was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been,’’ she said. “Before I took off my coat, I would just enjoy the views. The mountains were pink and the water was glass. It was like little ice cubes were in the water. It was gorgeous.’’

Far be it from me to suggest not taking a bloggers statements as gospel.

Quote

32. how does any of that change anything ? i'm sure china sweatshop workers are happy to get what they

7. Sarcasm has always been in my wheelhouse, thanks.

No illusions at all.

I appreciate the enlightenment about the proliferation of porn on the net. I don't really participate in viewing it as I find it often objectifies women, and an uncomfortable amount of it smacks of violence to me.

My the fuglies at the DUmp sure are getting upset with good looking women.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

I love how the "outrage zombies" post about the SI cover and then their allies--their ALLIES--say that the SI cover has no place on DU.

There's some classic circular logic for ya...
Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.
