"Many Americans Are Convinced Crime Is Rising In The U.S. They're Wrong"

The consequences of christofascist fearmongering and scapegoating. From the article:

Quote
In other words, we feel the risk of crime more acutely. We are certain crime is rising when it isn’t; convinced our risk of victimization is higher than it actually is. And in a summer when the president is sending federal agents to crack down on crime in major cities and local politicians are arguing over the risks of defunding the police, that disconnect matters. In an age of anxiety, crime may be one of our most misleading fears.

July 13, 2020    NCJ 254862

This report presents statistics on crimes known to law enforcement that were voluntarily reported to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program. The tables show the number and rate of violent and property crimes over the 5-year period from 2014 through 2018, by offense type and by the population group that was victimized. They also show the number and rate of homicides over the 10-year period from 2009 through 2018, by the sex and race of the victims.

Selected Findings From The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program (2018)
Highlights:

The violent crime rate in the United States rose 7% from 2014 to 2016 (from 362 to 387 violent crimes per 100,000 persons) and fell 5% from 2016 to 2018 (from 387 to 369 per 100,000 persons). +2% in 2018
The murder rate (including non-negligent manslaughter) in the U.S. rose 23% from 2014 to 2016 and fell 7% from 2016 to 2018. +26% in 2018
The rate of rape (revised definition) in the U.S. rose every year from 2014 to 2018, rising 15% over that span.
The U.S. robbery rate rose 2% from 2014 to 2016 and fell 16% from 2016 to 2018. -14% in 2018
The U.S. aggravated assault rate rose 8% from 2014 to 2016 and fell 0.6% from 2016 to 2018. +7.4% in 2018

OF COURSE, SINCE MARCH OF 2020:

The F.B.I. doesn’t supply recent crime statistics, so we collected Uniform Crime Report (U.C.R.) data for these cities (each with over 250,000 people), which reported data at least through the end of May.

MURDER in 2020
Year-to-date change, from 2019 to 2020
City   2020 Pre-Covid   Through Parts of June 2020
Chicago   16%   34%
Philadelphia   11%   23%
Oakland, Calif.   -41%   -8% Only city to have lower murder rates... but still up over 32% from before Covid...
Los Angeles   -3%   5%
Atlanta   -17%   4%
Nashville   92%   43%
New York   -13%   23%
New Orleans   14%   36%
Indianapolis   75%   38%
Jacksonville, Fla.   -3%   13%

Murder in New York was up 25 percent compared with last year as of June 14, but that total was the same one the city had in 2015.

Murder is up 22 percent in Chicago, but it’s down 6 percent from where it was at this time in 2017.

Murder is up 42 percent in New Orleans, but a year ago murder was its lowest point there in almost half a century.

So... Murder is up in all these... but it was lower before... fo... eh? WTF, New York Times?

Portland City Police are not updating their crime stats page... for obvious reasons... but some claim violent crime has spiked some 217% over last year... a 30 year high.

New York is reportedly seeing a spike in crime this past month compared to the same period last year, while rape, robbery and grand larceny crimes have declined, according to New York Police Department statistics.

There have been 38 murders over the last 28 days, twice as much as the same period last year, according to NYPD stats as of up to June 14. So far this year, there have been 159 murders, which is 25% higher than last year, the stats show.
This year's murder count is on par with New York's murder total five years ago and is well below the elevated murder totals of the decades before that, NYPD data shows.
Shooting incidents in 2020 are also up, with 394 happening to date, a 24% increase from the 317 shooting incidents at this point last year.

"The uptick in violence, I haven't seen anything this bad in a long time," said a law enforcement official. "This is the worst I've seen it in six or seven years."
The uptick in murders is tied to gang and drug activity, with drug dealers fighting over territory, another law enforcement official said.

The pandemic and New York's extended lockdown have left storefronts largely closed and caused many residents to flee the city, and the NYPD data shows a responding increase in burglaries and car thefts.

Over the last month, burglaries have sharply increased, with 1,691 incidents as compared to 759 the year before. Looting incidents that took place during demonstrations earlier in the month are included in the burglaries figure.

For the year, burglaries are up 47% compared to this point last year, from 4,480 to 6,595.

Car thefts, known as grand larceny auto, have also increased over 60%, with 3,078 incidents happening this year, up from 1,893 at this point last year. The car theft numbers are part of a national trend as fewer Americans travel and more cars sit idle in driveways and parking garages.

At the same time, comparing this past month to the same period last year, criminal complaints of rape are down 33%, complaints of robbery are down 23%, and complaints of grand larceny are down 44%, according to NYPD.

Burglary is unlawful entering a building with intent to commit a crime, grand larceny is unlawful theft of higher value items, and robbery is unlawful theft by force or threat of force.

Overall, the number of arrests has gone down; there has been a 32% decrease in arrests so far this year as compared to last year.

Well.... at least the arrests are down...  :whatever:

Democrats war on guns is coming back to bite them in the ass. For years they have been blaming guns for "the rise" in violent crimes and now they want to tell us that violent crimes aren't going up.  :stoner:

::) From what cavity of the writer's lower digestive tract was that chunk of bigotry excreted? ::)
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.
