Hartpence set himself up by pretending to be what he wasn't and presuming no one in the MSM would go after a D. And given the way the MSM shielded the Kennedy brothers, his presumption is pretty understandable.

He was shocked when the press actually followed him around after telling them basically "I you think I am fooling around, go ahead and follow me".

The fact he got caught, on film, on a boat called "Monkey Business" was his fault and just a bit of irony.
