I'm thinking if the Pope can step down, why can't Queen Elizabeth give poor ol' Prince Charlie a break?
Those tweets are vicious and totally uncalled for.  Wonder how many people would mouth off that way if confronted in real life by the subject of their malevolence.  Are they stupid, evil or both?

or being 85 years old and tired could be it too.  ::)

Only vesta (and Nadin) can misspell "Cardinal" two different ways in a single post.

IIRC...they will wait until his last official day is complete then convene the College of Cardinals just like if the Pope had died.

What is their field of candidates?  So many of them are old.  Pope John Paul II wasn't much older than the current one and served almost 30 years.

While this is sudden, it's not that much of a surprise, actually. Pope Benedict has said before that if his health prohibits him to perform his duties, he'd step down.

He actually asked to retire from his previous position, but JPII didn't let him.

It's also a symbolic move, doing this during Lent. Some church experts are calling it a "teachable moment." JPII taught Catholics how to deal with failing health with faith. Benedict--the thought goes--is teaching us humility.

Check out www.newadvent.com for some interesting--purely Catholic--perspective, if you're interested.

God alone suffices.

Well the Pope has power and oversees the Roman Catholic Church as a whole, whereas the HMS is only a figurehead. She can still change the succession even though Charles is heir apparent.....

Since he is the first to resign since the Great Schism. I've always wondered what would happen if there were 3 Catholic churches, French, Roman, and Greek Orthodox.

Well shut my mouth here.   Half my family and children are Catholic and this is unprecedented in 600 years.   Total shock to me and my family, even the Protestant members.

Wasn't that many months ago the Popes closest ad visor went on trial for leaking confidential documents to the public and found Guilty.

For the non Catholics here the Pope was the last resort for decency for many millions around the world.
He was known as PAPA for a reason, He was strict but fair and lived a hard life of isolation, like being in jail with no vacations or going into public to intermingle with the common man.

No.1 worse job in the world as I see it, history shows that those Popes before him had short times at their post due to politics within the church or the Cardinals wanting his job---Strange that.

So whats with age aside made him decide to go back into the life he had before he became Pope ???

My daughter called me all up set to wonder if the next Pope will be the last one.  Something she read about.

More and more people are going into the Bible to understand the last chapter and wondering if the last days of Good teachers are over and the future will bring in the warnings about the dark Angle of light---666

I have no problem with Frank, he I expect is as shocked and surprised as the rest of the world.  We had a darn good teacher and leader that out of the blue throws up his hands and says " I Quite".

Carrots.   You left out Russian Orthodox and Ethiopian Orthodox and the monks that guard the so called birth place of Jesus, who ever they are.  Mom tells me they were scarey when she was over there to visit one year.

Some people consider Russian and Ethiopian as part of the Greek Orthodox umbrella.

Breath taking this news.

Did the Butlers trial do him in ????

As He the Pope who spoke directly to God  have been sand bagged by the politics of his Cardnels ???

Has his confidence in the Bishops and Cardnals become so undermined he just gives up before he has an unfortunate accident ???

Sorry Sparky, but this upsets me  and  I now wonder how the world will react to this. Last thing the world expected and a shock to all faiths. For most of us the Catholic Church is the Mother Church that spawned all other Christian beliefs.  Martin Luther started the  spawning in Europe that led to the children of the Mother Church.

I have family that are aghast that this has happened, Baptist, on to 10 other denominations, that still find a tie to the Mother Church, Peter and the rock he built on.   All Christianity comes from the Mother Church, one way or the other.

Now Mother has quit and leaves us, not a good thing.  What are we to think, what is coming next ?

Actually the Baptist did not spawn from the Catholic church.

The Russians (along with various others) are eastern Orthodox and so are in communion with the Greeks. The Ethiopians are oriental orthodox who split off from the Catholic Church even earlier than the eastern Orthodox (over the Council of Chalcedon) and aren't in communion with the Greeks.

Pretty sure that's correct.  I'm going to ask St. Mom of the up north Parents when she calls tonight to ask me if I heard this.  :-)

What is their field of candidates?  So many of them are old.  Pope John Paul II wasn't much older than the current one and served almost 30 years.

Technically, their field of candidates is all unmarried Catholic men - in reality the Sacred College will elect one of their own. All Cardinals who are under the age of 80 at the time of the vacancy (in this case 28 February) are eligible to vote, which will mean that there are 117 voting Cardinals (unless one of them dies beforehand) in the conclave.

So what is the sequence of events in this case?  Does the College of the Cardinals select a new pope now, or wait until Pope Benedict steps down before deciding on a new one?

Being the Catholicism geek that I am, I read the relevant apostolic constitution earlier today - the Conclave has to wait for fifteen days after the vacancy arises before it meets, this is because it assumes the vacancy will arise from death and so be unexpected and thus there is a necessity of giving their Eminences time to get to Rome. His Holiness could dispense them from the requirement to wait, but if he does not do so before he resigns then the Cardinals cannot decide to convene early.
