NPR Ends Analyst’s Contract After Comments on Muslims

NPR has terminated its contract with Juan Williams, one of its senior news analysts, after he made comments about Muslims on the Fox News Channel.

NPR said in a statement that it gave Mr. Williams notice of his termination on Wednesday night.

The move came after Mr. Williams, who is also a Fox News political analyst, appeared on the “The O’Reilly Factor” on Monday. On the show, the host, Bill O’Reilly, asked him to respond to the notion that the United States was facing a “Muslim dilemma.” Mr. O’Reilly said, “The cold truth is that in the world today jihad, aided and abetted by some Muslim nations, is the biggest threat on the planet.”

Mr. Williams said he concurred with Mr. O’Reilly.

He continued: “I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”

Mr. Williams also made reference to the Pakistani immigrant who pleaded guilty this month to trying to plant a car bomb in Times Square. “He said the war with Muslims, America’s war is just beginning, first drop of blood. I don’t think there’s any way to get away from these facts,” Mr. Williams said.

Tell the truth, get fired from the MSM.

Time to defund NPR and PBS.

He's always been one of the more tolerable liberals on Fox, IMO.

never thought I would have any sympathy for juan williams.  the nazis at NPR (paid for with our tax dollars, by the way) say it is because of comments he made about muslims on o'reilly's show, but they have been looking for an excuse to can him for over a year.

way to go, juan.  this is probably your first exposure to the extreme intolerance of the left, their hostility to free speech, and their hyper partisanship to pet liberal causes.  if you have pissed of NPR, you must be doing something right.

Juan Williams was tolerable at least compared to other leftists I have seen. NPR is a joke and I can hear their bias quickly.

We need to de-fund PR. All they are is a Liberal talking points repeater, at least with their biased "talk" shows. I perceive them as Air America Lite........

No doubt Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg are going to storm off their show tomorrow in protest.

Newsflash, hags--you'd be the first with your noses and ears cut off for daring to come out from behind your burkahs.

Didn't hear at all about this.  My respect for Williams (who I would refer to as "Wrong Williams") has gone up drastically.

See what the left thinks of you Juan when for the first time ever you actually expressed an original thought rather then repeat a script of talking points.
Bet you always have thought it was Conservatives that demanded group think and censorship didn`t you?

Maybe it'll drive Williams towards the center . . . or Right. :fuelfire:

Wouldn't that be a hoot? :evillaugh:

I don't think so.  There would have to be evidence of bias against a recognized, aggrieved group.

All the comments on the Daily Caller reflect these CC comments as well.  The rub is the taxpayer-funded nature of PBS.  I wonder if this will be a catalyst?

I think WE is absolutely correct to say that NPR has been looking for an excuse to get rid of him.

From the article:

Quote
In February 2009, NPR said it had asked that he stop being identified on “The O’Reilly Factor” as a “senior correspondent for NPR,” even though that title was accurate.

Alicia C. Shepard, the NPR ombudswoman, said at the time that Mr. Williams was a “lightning rod” for the public radio organization in part because he “tends to speak one way on NPR and another on Fox.”

Ms. Shepard said she had received 378 listener e-mails in 2008 listing complaints and frustrations about Mr. Williams.

First of all, I get tickled when I read this PC crap like "ombudswoman". Sorta like a Chicago politician being called an "alderwoman" when they happen to be female. What a friggin' joke.

Secondly, a whopping 378 listener emails who bitch about Williams? Fast Company says there are 26.4 million listeners on NPR, admittedly not all of them deliberately listen to Williams. But it's decidedly ridiculous and disingenuous to state that NPR fired a guy because of 378 disgruntled libs who feel Williams isn't fellating the lib cause enough, or presents a differing opinion apart from NPR.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as a journalist, he's obligated to present the facts. But as a guest on O'Reilly's show, he may or may not be functioning as a journalist and more like a pundit, in which case he's entitled to his opinion.

It's a shame the NPR Nazis don't get that. Howzat for "All Things Considered?" Freakin' asshats.

looks like NPR has a disgruntled former employee on it's hands.

Quote
Reached this morning in Washington, Williams said he was still digesting the news of his termination and didn't want to comment. "I better bite my tongue at this point," he said.

Link

I'll bet this has more to do with the blow up o'reilly had with whoopi and that retarded fat woman than his "anti-muslim remarks".  it appears as though NPR has been gunning for him since last february, and then juan actually appears on that horrible bill o'reilly's show?  that was more than NPR could tolerate.

Quote
Mr. Williams’s contributions on Fox raised eyebrows at NPR in the past.

In recent years, Williams became a fridge break for me on Fox. He never did anything but flak for the left--and pretty boringly, with little insight even of the warped kind--on the Special Report and FNS panels. So I really can't feel very sorry for him.

There's little I can add to Carl's point. Will Williams wake up and smell the coffee, at least as much as Bernie Goldberg? We'll see.

Looks like NPR had a little help in making their decision about Mr. Williams:

Quote
It should be noted that the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) sent around a press release on Wednesday afternoon. CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad called for action against Williams: "Such irresponsible and inflammatory comments would not be tolerated if they targeted any other racial, ethnic or religious minority, and they should not pass without action by NPR." The New York Times somehow omitted CAIR from its Juan-is-gone story.
