When I was younger I was raised to be a Carter liberal. I too grew-up hearing the tales of the white man's rapacious exploits.
Mama tells me daddy was 1/2 Puerto Rican and 1/2 Carib native (his mama).
Wanting to be a good liberal I wanted to share in the hate-fest of all things Columbus and by extension...white, Christian European.
So, I looked-up the Caribs--from which we derive Caribbean...
...it seems they were cannibals.
How the hell was I supposed to hate the white Christianization of a people who were cannibals?
How could I condemn the "tribalism" of loathing the USSR (simply as a political paradigm, not counting 25 million murders of course) but embrace the tribalism that lead to eating of humans?
I was told that it was ceremonial, that the victim was being honored because he had fought so bravely his soul would live on in the body of the one who ate him.
An honor?
Try telling that to the guy getting eaten.
How the **** do rich, white people living under within a consensual government that protects their free speech even when they criticize that very same government say such brain-addled bullshit with any sense of sincerity?
That was one of the stronger fissures that started to seperate me from liberalism.*
* For those that have read my fiction, it is also where I developed my love of writing vampire fiction. It's my way of saying, "There! How do you like it now Mr Moral-Relativist?"
