Title: Owned Vehicles
Post by: CG6468 on July 17, 2013, 11:01:54 AM
What kinds of vehicles have you owned?

Mine were/are, in order (to the best of my recollection):

1930 Model A Ford pickup
1954 Mercury 4-door, 3 on the tree
1958 Chevy Impala convertible
1962 Chevy Biscayne
1968 Chevy Impala Station Wagon
1970 Toyota Station Wagon
1976 Chevy Chevette
1978 Ford LTD Station Wagon
1976 Ford LTD
1982 Chevy Impala
1982 Datsun Sentra
1986 Nissan Sentra
1997 Ford F-150 Pickup
1998 Toyota Corolla
1999 Nissan Station Wagon
2003 Honda CRV
2007 Honda Ridgeline

Geez. The $ we spent on cars......

I probably had the Buick the longest.  A pretty uneventful list.

1963 Ford Fairlane
1973 MG B
1982 Datsun 280ZX
1983 Datsun 280ZX
1986 Chevrolet Silverado
1987 BMW 325
1988 Volvo 240GL
1992 Buick Century
1995 Toyota Camry
1996 Toyota Camry

1986 Honda 250XL
1984 Honda Shadow 700C
1981 Honda CB750C

If I added all those up, it probably wouldn't come near the price of a new car.

edit:  I forgot one.  1959 Chevrolet Apache stepside pickup.  I didn't do anything with it... I ended up moving back to Tennessee a few months after I bought it and sold it for scrap. :(

I left off my wife's 1987 Toyota Camry. It got better mileage than any car since - 45+ MPG on trips from Chicago to Buffalo, NY.

And my 1988 Toyota Pickup

I tend to keep my cars a long time, unless they're pieces of shit that deserve to be shot to pieces with a .50 M2.

1962 Plymouth Valiant (pushbutton tranny, 225 slant six)
1962 Pontiac Catalina (389 with a 2bbl that INHALED gasoline)
1968 Pontiac Tempest (suspension shot to hell, it was a clunky 4-door powered by a buzzy 6OHC engine)
1973 Chevy Nova (307, my first muscle car  :rotf: )
1978 Chevy Nova (305, my muscle car wannabe that was a certified rust bucket  :lmao:)
1978 Olds Cutlass (I think - it had a diesel in it and TWO batteries)
1987 Ford Tempo (a nifty little car, ideal for Germany)
198X Ford Granada (? - German spec car)
1993 Ford Taurus wagon -- a bigger piece of shit has never existed
2000 Saturn LS (noisy, and the AC sucked, but a decent car up to 80K at which point I didn't trust it any more)
2004 Toyota Sienna minivan (my current car at 203K miles. Incredibly reliable, good on gas, roomy, and the best motor vehicle I've ever owned.)

When we met, my wife had a 1961 Pontiac Tempest with the slant 4 (1/2 of the V-8).

1982 Chevy Chevette - First Car (brake job cost more than car was worth so I got a...)

1985 Chevy Nova - (Sold it to pay a bill)

198ish Suburu GL - (learned the hard way about what happens if you don't check oil and other fluid levels)

1992 Geo Prizm - (First new car I ever owned)

19-it doesn't really matter Ford Aspire - (it aspired to be a car, called it the A$$pirate, turquoise green with hot pink pin stripe-  it was FREE!)

2000 Saturn SC Coupe.  (Called it Greenie.  I loved that dang car with all my heart and cried when I let it go.)

2007 Saturn Astra - (Called it Whitey.   :whatever: Perfect example of GM messing up something good.)

2012 VW Jetta - (Calling it Bonnie....it's blue.   :-)  Not quite the personality of ole Greenie, but it's a dang good car. )

1993 Ford Thunderbird (my favorite car -- 5L V8, wish I still had her  :bawl: )
2001 Ford Explorer
2006 Ford Explorer

2012 Ford Focus

Anybody sense a theme here from 86 on?  That's what happens when you have a brother and a FIL working/worked at Ford -- family discount.

I remember my buddy blowing his trans and/or engine in his '58 Impala convert. We'd push it back to his place, then into the barn, drop a chain-fall from the loft, take out the old & put in a new, and have everything re-hooked up a few hours. Then back out on the streets!

I also had the trans problem with my '54 Merc with 3 on the tree. The clutch link was the weakest ever made, and I blew 4 trannys in about 1.5 years.

The 283's were a solid engine......and you could buy all types of hot rod stuff for them across the counter.

For years the 283's were engine of choice for the "Late Model Sportsman" division of southern dirt track racing.

Yea they were under powered until you started tweaking them  ::) I changed the carb to a webber progressive downdraft, header, timing and advance curb, and bigger tires. The lil 1.9 would run pretty good at that point. I daily drove the 72 to college and delivering pizzas every night for 2 years. The only problem I ever had with the 72 was a lifter went bad and had NAPA order it from Germany. took 2 weeks back in 1992 ish.

I'm kind of pooped out right now. Do you remember a small Ford, that had almost a direct motor conversion?
I can't think of it right now.
Still a fun little car to drive on a budget.

I kind of want to say Pinto, with the 2.0L.

Well GM owned Opel till recently (they may still have some share not sure) they bought it from Adams Opel back in the 60's if I remember that is why we even had it here. I do not know of any ford that it was interchangeable but I may be wrong. The Saturn that GM bought used a lot of Opel engines Tots 2000 SC2 1.9 engine was very similar block design as my GT. I have a 1.9 that was bored .100 to fit 265 Chevy pistons (there are more than a few parts that interchange with GM cars) and they are on the rods waiting for me to get off my ass and do something...hehe That will make it an out of square 2.0....should work out fine.

57 Chevy
the Goat
Olds 98
Hurst Olds - fastest car I ever had - after blue printing engine - 11 1/2 to 1 compression, rated at 525 hp

fastest Bike - 750 Honda after customizing and beefing cc's

fastest boat - both were quick - 1st would crank at 68 mph on water -- 2nd kicked it at 76 when hit with short bursts on nitrus

Also forgot one - my first Jimmy - the GMC truck was stolen and totalled - replaced it with a Jimmy

Jaguar drivers are easy to frustrate.  I had one totally devastated when I left him at the lights in a 320SL Roadster.  He had a turbo 8 and couldn't believe he was slammed by a six cylinder. (which, if the truth be known, was a quick 0-60 @ 8 with an advertised top end of 148, although I don't think I ever went much over 110 and it was steady as a rock)  They don't have much humor if you are over 100 any more, as in do not pass go, go directly to jail. :siren:

Telegraph Rd. aka US24 was definitely the location of most races. I knew of a guy on a Kawasaki Z1 900 who got stupid and attempted to evade the cops after a race.

The fastest I've been on a bike was only 105 over a very short distance -- less than a mile. No windshield, so wind was very much a factor -- not to mention my puckered asshole. I do NOT riding at that kind of speed, especially on a public road.

On my Honda 919, however, I was only at 5 grand in 6th gear, with another 4 grand till redline. The guys who have ridden a lot faster than I have on a similar bike tell me the upper limit is 145, actual. (Indicated reads a bit more.) I believe them, but they're gonna have to do that without me.

Well the fastest I have ever been was 145 in the 68 Firebird I own when I was about 20 on the I635 The only thing that was going through my head was well you are in high gear at about 4k rpm and you have all drum brakes....better stop before you hit 6k rpm god ( it was like 2:78 original ) rear gears are hell on the freeway It has 3:55 now...much safer but more smokey. Not a fan of going fast on 2 wheels but will ride scooters on an occasion.

Fastest I did was about low 120s on the Honda Shadow over several miles.  Not particularly fast, but I was in the mountains.

I passed a State Trooper sitting in the opposite lane with his lights on.  Good thing there was a Jersey barrier separating us or I think I would have gone to jail if he had caught me.

edit: the really sad thing is that all the speeding I did, I lost that bike crossing an intersection at 40mph when some dickbag ran the red light to my left.  It tore the fork off the bike and I went tumbling over his little car onto the pavement on the other side.

As a young 'kid/adult' speed never bothered me especially when I was into fast cars, etc.  That all ended when my cousin was killed on his bike, 1 1/2 years after 2 tours as a ass in the grass grunt in Vietnam, without a scratch.  With a wife, kid and business I woke up [ well tried to].  Couple of times since have put the foot in the carb. and blow the wind out - always alone and on empty roads, but doesn't happen very often, sure do have 'old fart' syndrome now.

'Brother' of my fastest car and one I'd still like to have, but still liked all the others mentioned;

Citation x-11 - interesting car but a piece of crap

86 dodge colt - what a POS

86 olds cutlass supreme brougham diesel 4 door.

88 sunbird gt turbo convertible - that car was a RIOT. 140 mph with the top down.

84 s-10 blazer 4x4

94 geo metro - miser

200 gmc jimmy slt - good vehicle - 115k and still running strong

2000 geo metro - what a miser, AC works nice too

1991 s-10 blazer sport. My first v8 s-10 project

85 s-10 durango 4x4 extended cab pickup - my current toy - 388 CI small block, full roller, pro-comp rods, crank, keith black pistons, GMPP intake, sean murphy induction quadrajet, vortec heads, tiny roller cam from a ramjet 350 crate engine. Fully balanced. Stock 700r4, factory 3:73 gears, Autometer gauges. A torque monster in spite of the tiny cam. The 4 wheel drive and the AC work nicely. Full skidplates. Relegated to farm work at the moment but still fun when it gets muddy. Way too much motor for that truck though

Funny you should mention that. The tires I had on it when I had to drive it, were tall enough that it got around 16-18 mpg, which was surprising. I was really being easy on it though. Except a couple times I caught a mustang GT or a tuner at a stoplight.  :whistling: Not sure I'd have beat them if I hadn't caught them off guard. If I were to swap out the transfer case and front driveshaft for the equivalent pieces from an all wheel drive astro van, however, its on!  :asssmack: (yeah, they'll swap right in, and doing so makes for quite the nasty combo)

1966 Corvair
1970 Chevy Nova
1968 Chevy Caprice
1979 Chevy Nova
1984 Toyota Turdcell (wife I think it was a 84, could have been earlier)
1987 Ford Ranger
1988 Mercury Lynx (wife)
1986 Dodge Caravan (family)
1984 Nissan Sentra (gimmie)
1993 Pontiac Sunbird (family)
1986 Chevy Astro Van (gimmie)
2001 Saturn L100
2002 Saturn VUE (wife/kids)
1995 Ford F-250 Diesel
2007 Ford Ranger 4X4
2005 Mercedes Benz C-240 (wife)
2004 Buick LeSabre (kids)
2011 Mercedes Benz C-300 (wife)

All and all we keep our cars until they either fall apart or wreck. The C-240 was totalled in November and replaced by the C-300. The Saturn L-100 was totalled in 2008 and replaced by the Ranger. Both cars had >150K on the clock. The VUE is still running, has 230K miles on it, my son drives it.The 1987 Ranger was traded in with 340K miles on it. Overall, I have very good luck with cars and keep them going as long as possible.

1963 AMC Rambler 770 (yes, I bought it from an old lady)
1979 Dodge Omni 024 (nickle and dimed me to death, but was still running when it was sold in 1990)
1975 Pontiac Grand Prix (loved that land yacht)
1984 Camaro Z28
1991 Mustang GT (cried when that one went away)
1993 F-150 Extended Cab with the 5.8 (cried when the ex got that one repossessed)
1994 Ford Tempo (replaced the truck, ex got it repossessed the next year while I was deployed)
1981 Ford Escort SW (second car that I drove)
1984 Mercury Grand Marquis (two repossessions in two years will put a bit of a crimp in your credit score)
1966 Chevelle (small block monster, would outrun almost anything, windshield leaked like a sieve)
1991 Lincoln Continental
1996 Dodge 2500 Conversion Van
1994 Ford Escort Wagon
2002 Avalanche (would still be in my driveway if dickhead son hadn't totaled it in 2012)
2005 Subaru Baja Turbo (fast little car)
1996 Suburban (6.5 turbo diesel, stolen while in Philly)
2007 Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab
1999 Jaguar XJR (fastest car I have ever owned, killed this past October by a tree branch)

1991 Pontiac Sunbird $500 POS that only ran right for day till it blew a radiator hose. Never ending overheating problems after that. Eventually blew a head gasket. Drove it the scrap yard.

1997 Mustang GT Never had a problem. Lost my job, and it got repoed.

1987 Chevy Spectrum Appropriately painted brown with a brown interior. Was glorified go kart. Needed to be going downhill pedal to the metal with a tailwind to get pass 80. Eventually scrapped

1999 Suburban $4900 Had few problems. Blew the transmission at 156000 miles. Yet another GM pos to the scrap yard.

2001 Nissan Pathfinder $4900 Had it a year 10 payments left. Just over 180000 miles and still running strong. Only noteable issue was the alternator going out soon after I got it. Wanted a Mustang but had to settle for this. Got it the same day the Suburban blew the transmission.

That's pretty damn good. I built a SBC 415 stroker around 10-12 years ago. If I was lucky I got 5 MPG.

Its the cam, tires, and the q-jet, and the mercy shown to the footfeed.

The cam is, even though billet and pretty to the eye, actually tiny. Really tiny. And the q-jet, a very nice one from SMI, acts like a typical q-jet. Pretty easy on the gas until you flush. The tires I had on it when I was driving it, were 31 inchers. It has a stock converter paired with the 700r4, and the lockup functions, so that helps also. When I built the engine, I used keith black pistons that are dished with a D shape, designed for the vortec head style combustion chamber. Full floaters with circlips.

They look something like this:(http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/mediumlarge/uem-kb164-030_w_ml.jpg)

I calculated roughly 9.8 to one compression with the head gasket I used. I did use 1.6 roller rockers instead of 1.5, for a little extra, but only a little. It was more happenstance than anything else, as were most of the other parts. The oil pan I had laying around, from the blazer - a 4.3 v6 pan cut and rewelded with the JTR extension and redrilled with v8 oil pan rails. The block was given to me by a local farmer. The crank, rods, pistons, cam, rockers, gauges, centerbolt cast valve covers, intake, carb, timing cover (cast aluminum), water pump (aluminum reverse rotation) balancer (summit), were all late night ebay specials. Pennies on the dollar, the parts cost me. The intake and piston/rings/pins set were like...60 some bucks each for example. Balancing the reciprocating assembly and clearancing the block for the rod throws cost more than anything else.

Its pretty clear that its way way too much engine for that little truck though, so I'm looking for a stock 350 to put in it, and something more appropriate for this engine. I'm just stubborn about wanting to do it on the cheap. The truck its in now only set me back 300 bucks, with a barely running 2.8 in it. I tuned it up and drove it for 6 months on 5 1/2 cylinders before doing the swap rofl:

(http://s8.postimg.org/z2q7l0r11/truck_body.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)

(http://s8.postimg.org/4wrt68k45/underhood.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)

Kinda ugly underhood, but wasn't ever really meant to be pretty. Thats a full size suburban TBI air cleaner, trimmed to fit a carb airhorn, and the accessory bracketry is a factory 4.3 setup.

(http://s8.postimg.org/u1itjnjkl/gauges.jpg) (http://postimage.org/)

Still missing a volt gauge.

Chevelles and 60s/70's era platforms are just too expensive. Even the little 78-87 square body malibus are demanding a big price tag these days. I'm always looking for the older style s-10s with that in mind. Problem is, I need a clean short box 2 wheel drive body, and a short box 4 wheel drive frame, and the aforementioned AWD astro parts...to do what I have in mind.

Similar to one of these, but with a bunch more oomph:

Well mark off running strong at 180000 miles for my Pathfinder. It just spun a bearing. No choice but to fix it. And buy fix I mean another motor. Looking at close too $2000. Can't just get another vehicle like last time. Still owe $3300 on it. And paying for two cars at same time is something I can't do.  Paying to fix it and finish paying off is the cheapest option I have right now. Not buying another clunker. Been bit by that twice in the end you spend way more than the car is worth just to keep it running.

2004 Saturn Vue (with the 3.5 V6, fast but rides like a bull in the ring)

I don't think I have ever seen ANYONE with a list that long.

For me:
1968 Plymouth Satellite (My forever love but don't tell my wife) Painted "Dionysus" on her back panel.
1969 Buick Wildcat with the big engine.
1971 Datsun PL 620 truck -- a sweetheart that I put a camper on. Dual points that I gapped with a dime on the fly (warped camshaft) until I replaced the distributor with an electronic one.
1983 "Mustang" - blew chunks
1990 Eagle -- Black with the sweep fin.  Beautiful and I cried real tears when she was destroyed in a rear-ender. In fact, when I looked up the model I cried again.
2002 Eclipse -- I have her to this day. Only 21K miles which freaks out my mechanic.  I travel a lot and don't put a lot of miles on her.
2007 MR2 Spyder: What a honey.  It could do a U-turn inside a lane.  But you didn't get in it -- you put it on.  Eventually the groans of Mrs. FD and I were louder than the engine. Poor man's Porsche and she could zip like no one's business. It didn't hurt to let her go but she will always be that main squeeze from our youth.

That covers all the vehicles of my life.  I loved 5 of them and still have one of them.  I think all you guys know what I am talking about. We fall in love with them, pamper them but eventually we have to let then go.  Thank God I have my latest one.  I think I can get 30 years our of her.

You might consider grabbing a compression gauge, a battery, and a little fuel,  and checking out your local "you pull it" yard, for a cheap alternative. If you're a decent wrench, and have a little luck looking, you might find something that works for you on the cheap. That is a new enough vehicle that you can read true mileage on the odometer, and you could luck out finding a lower mileage unit totalled. I found a transmission for the metro with 80k on it that way. Your pathfinder is just the right vintage that there should be a large selection available.

Its worth considering.

If you look hard enough you might stumble upon an upgrade engine......not that familiar with the pathfinders but most manufactures have several engines that bolt to the same trans and other things bolt up as well....will depend on your mad wrenching skilz.

Already has the 3.5 V6. Largest engine available for it when sold new. I doubt highly a the V8 from a titan will fit inside the engine compartment. The V6 already takes up most of the engine compartment.

Is there anything on Craigslist you can use as a donor?  You can have the engine pulled and sell the rest for scrap.

Like I said don't know much about your vehicle. There might have been a bigger engine that would fit without work...but that said you CAN fit ANYTHING into ANYTHING if you have a sledge, welder and the skill....just saying.

The Sprite is long gone. I had it in high school, lots of fun times in that car!

The Indian I bought from an interesting fellow, he had it in his den along with one of those life sized carved Indians. I picked it up cheap in unrestored running condition. I changed the fluids, rebuilt the carb and a tune up. It ran like an old bike then!
I sold it at the height of the USA bike craze in the 90's, great return on investment!

I drove an 84 RX7 with the 13B once and was really impressed.  If I had the room, I would love to have one.

I also drove a third generation TT RX7 that had been warmed over.  It's the only car I've ever driven that I feared.  Holy shit.  What made it so bad was the almost unbelievable Jekyll & Hyde personality the car had.  The car would wind out below 4500RPM like a real gentleman, even if you goosed it.  I would go so far as to say a stock Accord could possibly hole shot you until 30MPH from a stoplight- if you weren't willing to dump the clutch.

After 4500RPM, it was all over.  ALL over.  You best be paying attention to what's going on far down the road in front of you while maintaining a white-knuckled death grip on the steering wheel, because the revs are coming at you almost faster than you could shift.

That thing could grab you by the balls like I've never experienced before.  The two utterly extreme differences in how the car could accelerate depending on how you were driving made it a real handful.

I'd probably give my left testicle to have that car.

On the subject of owned cars, I wish I could have put one of these on my list:

These (and at one time even more- this is merely what was left when I finally stopped to take a photo) were parked in front of an area pizza joint overlooking the road.

They were all for sale, in varying conditions (although none of them were less than fair/good), and various states of originality.

We were saving to pay off our home, and so I couldn't convince myself to buy one, even though they were reasonably priced.  I really wanted one of the ones that looked mostly untouched.
