Did Obama register for the draft?
« on: June 07, 2008, 03:20:41 PM »
I suppose you can't fault a candidate for not volunteering for the military, particularly in the late 1970s when Obama came of military age.

However, I do think it is important to know whether a male candidate for Commander-in-Chief registered for the draft.  I remember doing it in 1981.  Obama should have in 1979.  I wonder if he did, given his foreign upbringing and foreign/lefty background.

Anyone know how to check this?  The Selective Service website requires birthdate and social security number to check a registration.

He would have had to register for the selective service upon turning 18.

Sure, it's the law. However, people break the law every day. So, did he? I think that would preclude him from being qualified to become the CinC.  :stirpot:

Now that I read up on this a bit, he wouldn't have registered when he turned 18, because Ford has suspended mandatory registration for the selective service.

Obama would have registered for the draft after Carter reinstated it.

And isn't Federal Aid, scholarships/loans, dependant upon signing up for the Selective Service?  It is now, but I'm not sure about back in the early 80s.

It's not one of those types of laws, that I know of. If you register at 26, no one is going to throw you in jail because you didn't register the day you turned 18.

Right.  I know that today that you cannot get any Federal loans/grants for college if you haven't signed up for the selective service (if you're male that is).

I would assume, that this was big news when Carter reinstated the Selective Service registration.  Also we know that Obama did have student loans.  I would assume that he is registered.

This guy here says the Selective Service says he did register.  Don't know how much stock to put into it, but thought I would share:

I have repeatedly contacted the Obama campaign and asked if the rumors about him refusing to register for the Selective Service are true. They refuse to answer.

So would you vote for him if he is another Draft Dodger?

Then he edited it to say

Selective Service just replied that he did in fact register in 1980. So the rumor is FALSE!

.....which reminds me, when women were burning their bras and demanding equal this and that, why didn't they demand that they be required to sign up for selective service?  :stirpot:

Hey, I agree, women should have to register for the Selective Service.  I would think that having men only would violate the 5th Amendment, but the Supreme Court disagrees with me.

Thats one of those things that I don't think he could have gotten around.  There are a lot of "perks" provided by the government that you are not allowed to get if you don't register, especially help with college and stuff like that.  Since daddy didn't buy his way through school, I'm sure he applied for help somewhere along the line.

I received my Selective service registering notification when I was stationed in Germany. One would have thought the APO address would have been a clue but this is the govt we are talking about.
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

Ha! I had an Honarable Discharge in hand when I got my notice to report. Like someone said, "...but this is government we are talking about."
