Bought a truck yesterday. 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. It won't get much hard work. Lot of highway miles, pull a two or four horse trailer very rarely, and take me fishing. I've been beating up my '06 PT Cruiser for it's whole life. I don't know how many deer and antelope my friends and I have stuffed into the back end of it. Or how many rocky roads it has crawled to get me closer to where the fish are! I think this will work for a long time. It's even an automatic. The Cruiser is a 5 speed, but you can't get a manual in the 1/2 tons anymore.
I've heard pros and cons on the Hemi. Even my brother and sister, both engineers, don't agree. Hope I did okay by going with one. The only experience I have with one in the past was when Dodge started putting them in maybe six or eight years ago (?) and a friend insisted I run his when traveling to my oldest daughters because he thought my station wagon was near death. For a couple years he thought that. lol So the Cruiser gets relegated to the task of go-cart. I'm shooting for 300,000 in it, and after replacing the motherboard yesterday, I'm counting on it to last. We're half way there!

The Chrysler/Dodge hemi engine design has been around for a long time. The one that comes to mind is the 426, usually put into a Barracuda or Charger. Muscle-car era of the late sixties, early seventies.

A friend of mine bought a truck just like yours new to tow his Airstream. He says he can tell a trailer is on the hitch but handles so much better than the Chevy he had. The Chevy would shuttle the gears on the freeway constantly.

WOW that's a shame, that truck would get much better fuel economy with a standard. I hate automatics.

Tell ya what, yours looks nice, but after putting 10K miles in just under 5 months on mine, I love it.
I never thought I'd say that a six-cylinder 1/2 ton "hauls ass" but this one does just fine. Love me some Ecoboost!

Best car with the least trouble I ever had was a '64 Plymouth with a 318 and push buttons. Most trouble with a pickup that I know of in the family was bro-N-laws '92 Dodge Dakota with a 318 and automatic that he bought new. It was in and out of the shop constantly with transmission trouble and was never loaded or pulled anything.

Maybe I'm allergic or sensitive to it, but the interiors of Chrysler vehicles really stunk to me.

For me it's ergonomics. Chrysler/Plymouth products just feel wrong. And the styling usually reeks, but that's secondary to reliability.
That said, the 225 slant six I had in my 62 Valiant was a solid little engine. Ran forever -- until I totaled the car, of course. :thatsright:
Yeah, like Johnny said, I hope you enjoy the new truck! The hemi engine design is definitely a winnah. :-)

I've put about 1100 miles on it. Most of those in the mountain areas of Snowmass and Aspen, CO this past week. I'm getting 18 to 20 mpg. Pretty happy with that.
Having hauled anything very heavy. A ton of hay here and there. Or wood shavings.
The grill guard and trailer hitch I finagled when I bought this are both in. Will get those put on when I get back to WY. Now looking into bed liners.
Spay on? Or, drop in? Opinions welcome.

I would install a Spray on. The ones you drop in are usually slick and thing slide around. everyone that I know that has a spray on bed liner loves it..my 2c

I will most likely be hauling metal T-posts, windows, doors, etc. I don't know anyone with a bed liner. Most ranchers, myself included, just figured damage to the bed is part of the deal. But, I care about, and for, my things more now than in years past. In your experience, will the spray on liner last? Or, will sharp edges cut through it?

Rhino Liner (i think is the brand name) A friend of mine had it in his truck...you could not make items slide around if you wanted to and as far durable, it is sprayed on thick so cuts and abrasions don't go to the metal. I will be putting a spray in liner in my truck as soon as I fix a few problem areas. :-)

Mentioned wanting to do this to a nurse at work. She called her dad who is a mechanic and has coached me through a couple small, odd repairs on daughters Jeep. He came by at lunch and showed me the roll-on bed liner that he applied. I'm going to give it a shot!

I bought a 1/2" thick heavy duty rubber mat that was made for my F-350 ....can't remember the name of the company that made it. It was great except for one little thing.....as oil got spilled in the back of the truck, the mat grew and grew. I kept having to cut some off the end so I could close the tailgate. :-)
