You've got a month off. Money is no object. You can go anywhere in the world you want to go, stay where you want to stay, see what you want to see, and very importantly, eat what you want to eat. You only get to go to one country though. The culture and sights figure 50% in your choice of destination, and the local cuisine weighs the other 50% in your choice of destination. Where would you go?
I'll start. I'd go to China, spending my first three days hiking 10 mile sections of the Great Wall. Then I'd spend 10 days visiting some of China's fabulous archeology and paleontology sites, and some of her great museums. Then I'd go to rural northern China, up in the wheat belt, where the staple is bread, not rice. I'd eat where the locals eat and not at tourist-busy restaurants.
Any butcher shop in the country offers glazed roast duck and Chinese sausage. The butcher will chop them up in bite-sized pieces. Then next door to the produce shop for some green onions and shallots. Then to the bakery for some sticky rolls or any of the hundred other types of northern Chinese bread. Finally to the grocery store for some local beer. Simple fair but hardy and delicious. That's how I'd eat, where the work-a-day Chinese eat. Then I'd spend whatever time I had left zipping around the countryside in China's bullet trains, shooting videos and stills. Then back home from a super memorable trip.
