Toronto - The health care model in Canada is delivered through a publicly-funded system where many go to their doctor's office and show them a health card. But in this day and age of deficits, debt and costs, can Canada still afford this system?
The Canadian federal government’s public debt stands at more than $526.7 billion and maintains a budget deficit of approximately $57 billion. Most provinces across the country are also attempting to sustain deficits, such as Ontario, which is running a $22 billion deficit.
Soaring health care costs and deficits could force Canada to reassess and revise its health care model, according to a new report by TD Economics. Some provinces, like Quebec, are adding a new flat health tax and a proposed payment for each medical visit. Other provinces are conjuring up the idea of having private funding for such procedures as hip or cataract surgery.
A new report from Statistics Canada showed that by the year 2036, there will be much more seniors from the baby boom generation than youth, which would be hard for the health care system to take care of such demands from the elderly.
“There's got to be some change to the status quo whether it happens in three years or 10 years,†said senior economist at Toronto Dominion Bank, Derek Burleton, reports Reuters. “We can't continually see health spending growing above and beyond the growth rate in the economy because, at some point, it means crowding out of all the other government services. At some stage we're going to hit a breaking point.â€
According to CBN News, analysts project that the health care costs will take up 70 per cent of the Canadian government’s budget in 12 years. In Ontario, health care spending is expected to make up 80 per cent of the budget by 2030, reports CBC News. But don’t tell that to Canadians because a new poll already suggests that health care has become more of a concern than the economy.
