sucks. Why, you ask? I took the family on a weekend trip to the Monterey Bay area this weekend. On the way back we stopped at several road side veggie stands in the Castroville area:
White corn: 7 ears for a dollar. Yellow was 10 ears for a buck.
Small Artichokes: a dozen for a dollar. Here is what we do with them:
http://freshcatering.blogspot.com/2005/11/fried-baby-artichokes-with-lemons.htmlWe bought 2 doz.
Brussel Sprouts (
if you don't like them
) $3.99 for a 2 ft long stem, at home, that's a 1 lb price. The stem weighs around 5 lb.
Cantaloupes and Honeydew melons the size of small watermelons................you guessed it.........one dollar.
Everything was being unloaded from the trucks and being trimmed as we shopped. It was about as fresh as you can get. Incredible.
Here at home you pay triple (or more) the prices!
