CIA says used waterboarding three times

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The CIA on three occasions shortly after the September 11 attacks used a widely condemned interrogation technique known as waterboarding, CIA Director Michael Hayden told Congress on Tuesday.

"Waterboarding has been used on only three detainees," Hayden told the Senate Intelligence Committee, publicly specifying the number of subjects and naming them for the first time, as Congress considers banning the technique.

Those subjected to waterboarding were al Qaeda suspects Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, Hayden said.

He said waterboarding has not been used in five years, but it was used then because of concerns of imminent catastrophic attacks on the United States and because authorities had limited knowledge of al Qaeda

3. US has prosecuted waterboarding as torture in the past
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterboarding

The United States has a historical record of regarding waterboarding as a crime, and has prosecuted individuals for the use of the practice in the past. In 1947, the United States prosecuted a Japanese military officer, Yukio Asano, for carrying out a form of waterboarding on a U.S. civilian during World War II. Yukio Asano received a sentence of 15 years of hard labor.<31> The charges of Violation of the Laws and Customs of War against Asano also included "beating using hands, fists, club; kicking; burning using cigarettes; strapping on a stretcher head downward."<74>

In its 2005 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, the U.S. Department of State formally recognized "submersion of the head in water" as torture in its examination of Tunisia's poor human rights record,<75> and critics of waterboarding draw parallels between the two techniques, citing the similar usage of water on the subject. On September 6, 2006, the U.S. Department of Defense released a revised Army Field Manual entitled Human Intelligence Collector Operations that prohibits the use of waterboarding by U.S. military personnel. The department adopted the manual amid widespread criticism of U.S. handling of prisoners in the War on Terrorism, and prohibits other practices in addition to waterboarding. The revised manual applies only to U.S. military personnel, and as such does not apply to the practices of the CIA.<76> However, under international law, violators of the laws of war are criminally liable under the command responsibility, and could still be prosecuted for war crimes.<77>

5. Didn't we hang Japanese Officers
for water boarding during WWII? Now that this administration has come out and admitted to war crimes I'd really like to see the whole ****ing bunch in front of a judge in The Hague.

I can't believe that one single administration has been able to make me embarrassed to be an American, it's pathetic it truly is.

No actually it's you that embarrasses us that you and the other primitives are Americans

We can safely assume that thereafter, a system was put in place so that their interrogation techniques were better concealed.

7. Not three "times", three victims. CIA already admitted it waterboarded KSM repeatedly.
Wouldn't be terribly surprised if it comes out the other two also suffered partial drowning more than once.

CIA Director Hayden confirms names of torture/waterboarding victims
Advertisements [?]Edited on Tue Feb-05-08 03:33 PM by malaise

<snip>
CIA Director Michael Hayden on Tuesday publicly confirmed for the first time the names of three suspected al-Qaida terrorists who were subjected to a particularly harsh interrogation technique known as waterboarding, and why.

As for waterboarding, it was used on only three people more than five years ago. For the first time, he identified them in public — Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Abu Zubaydah, and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. Mohammed was the purported mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

They were subjected to waterboarding "because of the circumstances of the time — the belief that additional catastrophic attacks were imminent at a time when the U.S. had limited knowledge of how al-Qaida worked," Hayden.

Can we Impeach them yet?..CIA admits waterboarding inmates
 Advertisements [?]http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7229169.stm

The CIA has for the first time publicly admitted using the controversial method of "waterboarding" on terror suspects.
CIA director Michael Hayden told Congress however that it had only been used on three people, and not at all for the past five years.

He said the technique had been used on high-profile al-Qaeda detainees including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Waterboarding is an interrogation technique in which the detainee is put in fear of drowning.

Mr Hayden was speaking as National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell presented his annual threat assessment.

We used it against these three detainees because of the circumstances at the time,

Some critics describe the procedure as torture and Congress has been debating banning its use by the CIA.

4. Dammit. Congress doesn't have to ban its use...
it's already banned. It is torture, and torture is illegal.

Quit *****footing around on this Congress. Do your damned job and start PROSECUTING THESE BASTARDS!!

Quit asking Mukasey if waterboarding is torture. That question has already been answered by our courts when we prosecuted others for it under war crimes statutes.

Quit protecting these assholes. PROSECUTE THEM AND PUT THEIR SORRY ASSES IN PRISON.

WTF?!?!

Only THREE times?

I have been buying waterboarding credits for six years now with the hopes of using them FREELY on the DUmmys when we "admit" them to our re-education camps.

I gave half of these waterboarding credits to the CIA so they can retain this method of interrogating FOD's (Friends of Dummy's) while keeping the impact on their war chest at a minimum.

SON-OF-A-@&^%!!

These damn waterboarding credits are becoming as worthless as that pile of carbon credits I have sitting in the corner.

Harrrumph!!!

I thought we already knew waterboarding was used.  Especially on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who I think I heard lasted the longest, like 2 minutes or something.

Anyway, what are the DUmmie's news sources that they are just learning this?

Maybe we can torture future threats by setting the DUmmies and the Code Pinkos loose on them.  Listening to the DUmmie logic or seeing Code Pinkos up close is enough to make them convert, I would think.
