Syrian rebels seize U.N. peacekeepers near Golan Heights
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:21:56 PM »
Quote
(Reuters) - Syrian rebels have seized a convoy of U.N. peacekeepers near the Golan Heights and say they will hold them captive until President Bashar al-Assad's forces pull back from a rebel-held village which has seen heavy recent fighting.

The capture was announced in rebel videos posted on the Internet and confirmed on Wednesday by the United Nations, which said about 20 peacekeepers had been detained.

The seizure is the most direct threat to U.N. personnel in the nearly two-year-old uprising against Assad, and Human Rights Watch said it was investigating the same brigade for past executions.

It came on the day Britain said it would increase aid to the opposition forces and the Arab League gave a green light to member states to arm the rebels.

The Arab League also invited the opposition Syrian coalition to take Syria's seat at a meeting of the regional body in Doha later this month. Syria was suspended in November 2011 in response to its crackdown on protests which has since spiraled into civil war.

Hey, they're fellow Muslims and general phuckups.

Assad is scum, the rebels are scum.  It beats the shit out of me why we would take sides at all, NOBODY there is going to be more favorably-disposed to us when the smoke clears no matter how much we give to any of them, it's just money down a rat-hole.

I have my doubts about who the U.N. Peacekeepers really are.

I was kinda excited about the FSA threatening to go to war with Hezbollah, just for that threat alone I'd give them some bullets, food and band aids.

But if they are just going to fight Basher then I would just stand aside and let them thin themselves out.

Edit: So, if you believe the news link in the OP then there are roughly 30 "Filipino" U.N troops being held by the FSA.

I'm not sure I understand how as U.N troops you put yourself in a position to get captured by the FSA but whatevs. As long as it ain't Americans.

I suppose that this puts U.N. troops within range of the FSA but it might not provide air support, isn't that wierd?

I'd arm both sides to keep them killing each other as long as possible and use the profits to fund democracy movements in S America.

It doesn't make sense to me that the FSA would use UN hostages to get something from Assad.  Weren't they there to help the FSA? Or is this more funny UN stuff they pulled in Lebanon when Hezbollah tried to take over?  I bet they are Hezbollah.
