Cable Modems

Since I've moved back to Texas, I've been using a cable modem supplied by the cable company, a Motorola (Arris). I got tired of paying $6/ mo just for the  modem rental. (It was $3/ mo up in MN) and broke down and purchased my own cable modem. I got a Linksys cable modem. So far, it seems as if this cable modem is markedly faster. I can't say why, but I have my suspicions. I'm thinking that the Linksys cable modem has more throughput than the Motorola. I can now view Youtube videos without much stuttering. Everything else seems to load more quickly even though the speed tests come out similar. For those that have cable modems, you may want to consider getting your own. I paid just under $30 for a refurbed model from http://3btech.net  My experience with 3btech has been nothing but extremely satisfactory. They rival Newegg, IMO.

My cable modem is an RCA supplied by the cable company, but I don't pay a monthly fee on it. :)  I signed up when they had a deal for free set up, free modem and one month free.  Considering what I pay though, it's the least they could do.

I might try a new one to see if it is any faster, but I can't complain much about my download speed. anywhere from 10-15mb/s.

TWC supplied wireless router

can't complain.

downloads are upwards of 17mbps, sometimes more.

Just tested at 18.28 mbps download right now, upload is only .44 of course. heh.

My cable company caps it around 5 Mbps, so anything over that is gravy. I could pay more and get more, but it's already expensive enough.

I like streaming netflix movies in HD to my laptop. $9 a month for Netflix lets me watch many movies.

Hey, guys, reading FGL's post I remembered that I have just installed a new router that has both ports for the ether net cables and is wireless also.  My wife wanted a computer in her sewing room but it was to far from the old modem to be able to wire it up.  We bought a D-Link, set it up, plugged in the ehther's, set up the wireless and, boom, my wife has a computer in her room.  The only problem is that it takes the computer at least twice as long to boot up on wireless as it did when it was wired.  After it boots everything works as usual.

Why does it take so much longer to boot up?

Um. huh? My computer loads normally and then the wifi transciever loads, I guess it needs the PC to function to load properly. I can switch it off if I need to do something offline and the battery is getting low. The internal wifi card is a power hog.

How old is the computer, processor speed, RAM and which operating system??
