Title: Sauerkraut and sausage...
Post by: marv on November 23, 2013, 10:19:41 AM
An old Polish recipe...

1 can of beer
1 14oz can of sauerkraut drained
2 pounds kielbasa (smoked sausage also works)

Cut the sausage into 1" pieces. Dump everything into a crock pot, and cook on low for about 4-5 hours.

Done! (http://www.conservativecave.com/Smileys/default/happy.gif)

I haven't tried it that way with beer.  I'll have to give it a shot soon.

That sounds good. Got a freezer full of Johnsonville brats, too!

I'll eat plain sauerkraut, but I prefer it with carraway seeds in it. The carraway seeds adds something to the kraut that makes it more palatable, IMO.

We don't serve anything with it, it's a one-dish meal....meat and vegetable.

Strange most  first generation  Polish meals had on the side, Beets, turnips, onions  and any ingrown vegetables they could. White and yellow potatoes, these meals were for late winter to use up what they had in the root cellar.

They had their hams, all corn fed that today are hard to find, smoked pork and beef, fish and some fantastic kinds or relish that is nowhere to be found today.

My deceased father in law would cook up some really wonderful dishes learned from his family that came here from Poland.    One was a chicken soup served over boiled potatoes,  he and wife had been lucky to come here before WW2.

Good eating's  not to mention the Parodies and [Spelling --Gulempies]

Did you mean pierogi? My maternal Grandmother would make them when I came home from grade school. She made the peasant recipe, only filled with cottage cheese. Another favorite of mine were her potato pancakes sprinkled with sugar and rolled up.

She emigrated from Prussia in 1879. Grandma, with her husband George and step-son William, about 1910 or so...

Her's is an interesting story about Prussia, Poland and Russia - all before she emigrated to the US.

Never been fond of sauerkraut right out of a jar. I like to put a few juniper berries in there, along with a bay leaf or two, and oh yeah, BACON.  :-)

Yup. I just "layer" it. Brats, taters, onion, kraut, and then pour the beer in. The sauerkraut gets sweet when done.

Tried this with some fear as hubby hates kraut as much as I hate Liver.   I steamed up whole baby spuds  and baby carrots.    I added nothing not even S&P poured a can of Budweiser over the Kraut and Kielbasas.

Cooked on low 5 hours, mashed the spuds, left the carrots whole and served the meal with rye bread and butter.

Off I went to hide under the be, must have fallen asleep, when I awoke hubby was snoring away in his recliner and he must have eaten 3/4 of the meal.

Must say Hubby loved it to his surprise and mine.

Now anyone know how to cook beef liver so I can handle it ????

Hmmm.... was going after a pork shoulder to start fixing tonight for pulled pork barbeque.

Don't know what I was thinking! It's New Year's Day ( I have been so confused on my days for the last 10  :thatsright:  )

Will be fixing spareribs cooked hours with sauerkraut. Then fix mashed potatoes and cooked apples (I hate applesauce) to go with. Perfect food to go with football!
