8. Ask your student if businesses seek payment for their goods or services.

That's what taxes are - payment for what is rendered by others.

9. If a business was failing it probably didn't have any income so it wouldn't be paying income tax.

They would not be paying sales tax on the things they buy for resale since that tax is passed on to the end user. They would pay social security and medicare tax on their employees and workers comp which is insurance not a tax. But since most failing businesses are laying people off they are also cutting their tax burden along with the payroll.

Just what tax is causing them to fail?

Geezuz, the governmental employee primitive is stupid.

Taxes on goods and services that the companies have to pay, that they must pass on to the ultimate consumer, and if the taxes are too high, the prices are too high for ultimate consumers to purchase what the companies do, or make.

I've never met a governmental employee who knew shit about where money comes from.

And here, we get a nice little stretchy:

10. On Sunday, a wingnut told me the reason jobs were being offshored is because of taxes

I said, "No, it's because of cheaper labor."

The wingnut said, "OK, cheaper labor AND taxes".

Someone else at the table told the wingnut, "Well, the company I work for hasn't paid taxes, yet has offshored lots of jobs."

The wingnut just sat there.

11. I keep telling this kid that the reason companies hire expensive tax lawyers is to find ways around paying taxes

he got all bowed up and started spouting that "NO!!!11 Businesses pay the majority of taxes in society!!111. Millions of dollars in taxes!!!111"

also overheard him tell someone that his daddy was going to get him a job with his company so he's pretty much "hooked up"

15. I am so sorry you have to deal with ignernt ungreatful lil snots

I might be giving away my age, but we were taught to at least LISTEN to the person at the head of the class before spouting uncouth disrespect.

This was sometimes backed up with a board about 30 inches long with a handle carved out of one end and it was applied to the gluteus with force directly proportionate to said disrespect.

Oh my.  A primitive advocating corporal punishment in schools.

That's new.

18. the reason business are failing is that there is no business

I've got clients, but they're all having trouble coming up with cash, and that hurts my business.

This student is obviously not running a business of his own.

Well, there never was much money in holding basket-weaving seminars.

19. please explain that...

...when you have no income or no profits, you don't have any taxes due. Profits often require revenues, so no revenue usually means no profits. No spending, no revenues. its axiomatic.

Then the silly primitive, the "SoCalDem" primitive, posts a couple of charts that signify nothing to do with the issue.

Lowest Business Tax States Have Best Economies: Study
Budget & Tax News > December 2006
Taxes
Taxes > Economic Growth

The states with the most competitive business tax climates have much faster rates of growth in population, employment, economic output, and personal income than those with unfriendly business tax climates, according to the Tax Foundation's recently released 2007 State Business Tax Climate Index.

"Taxes matter to business," said Tax Foundation President Scott A. Hodge in announcing the October 11 release of the fourth annual index, which ranks the business tax climate of all 50 states. "Taxes are an important cost to business, as important as the cost of labor and raw materials."

----------

Corporate Taxes Hurt Nation

Hodge noted states are competing for investment in a global environment as well as a national one. On the global front the United States has one of the highest corporate income tax rates in the industrialized world, at nearly 40 percent when federal and state corporate income taxes are averaged. That exceeds corporate income tax burdens in France, Germany, and Sweden, all known for high taxes.

"Ireland has a 12.5 percent corporate income tax rate. Slovakia has a 20 percent flat tax. US Steel has a plant in Slovakia, and it is one of its most profitable plants because of the low corporate tax rate. We're at a disadvantage," Hodge said.

libnnc is well versed in "THE STUPID"....but since he/she/it is teaching at a community college maybe not PhD-ed in it yet.

Selfemployment is the best education money can buy.

I'm too depressed to comment on the ignorance of this community college teacher, and the DU respondents.  A H5, though, to the student who called his teacher a communist.

A breakdown comes from The White House Office of Management and Budget, which shows that in fiscal 2007 (the 12 months ending last Sept. 30) receipts from individual income taxes accounted for 45.3 percent of the government's total tax revenues, while receipts from social insurance and retirement taxes made up 33.9 percent and corporate income taxes 14.4 percent. Most of the social insurance and retirement taxes (94 percent of them) are Social Security and Medicare receipts; the category also includes unemployment insurance and Railroad Retirement. Excise taxes, which would include the gasoline tax our reader asked about, made up 2.5 percent of all receipts and 3.9 percent came from other sources. OMB's "other" category includes estate and gift taxes, and customs duties and fees.

It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.
