Title: Cars
Post by: Chris_ on February 16, 2011, 05:34:59 PM
Anyone here like mechanics.  I am a nut about cars and working on them.  I love to build hotrods.  I am going to take an engine and engine cradle out from under a 1995 Dodge Caravan and put it under the rear end of a 1987 Ford Ranger.

For me the fun is building.  I will have to build mounts on the frame of the Ranger to mount the Caravan engine and then will have to build a wiring harness to connect the wiring harness for the Ranger to the wiring harness of the Dodge.  And there are other things that have to be made or adapted to make the marriage work.

Back in the 90's I took and 8 cylinder engine and a 4 speed auto trans from a Cougar and put it in an 87 Ranger.  Talk about something moving.  When you hit the gas pedal that Ranger would literally jump.

I like car I just don't have the money for them most of the time. I more of less restored a Renault 5 once but that is about it.

I knew a dude once that put a 383 stroker into a Chevy Astrovan.  People could tell it wasn't stock when they pulled up next to it and would signal that they wanted to race.  He'd accept, of course, and smoke their ass every single time!  Imagine the pain of losing a race toa minivan!!!   :yahoo:

I used to have a 72 Cutlass that would smoke Vettes and those 5.0 liter POS Ford products. I had added some stuff to the engine, sans a complete rebuild. It looked like shit but embarrassed a few folks. I also had a 79 Old Cutlass wagon with similar reworkings that got me in trouble with the law. (First gear topped out at 75 mph.....)

"Cars" not so much.

Off-road high clearance 4x4 vehicles, either the racing type or the long distance remote area rigs are both of interest.

How's your 3-series?  I got mine out on the road and it's a hell of a lot of fun.  Light, nimble, and very quick. :hyper:

I do miss having a first gear.  Rush-hour traffic is a PITA without it.

OMG, dude, this car is amazing! When I ride my Busa I like having the ability to get around traffic with ease.  This car gives me the same feeling!  Dallas drivers drive me nuts how they'll get next to each other on a two lane road and match each other's speed.  Meanwhile half of Dallas is stuck behind their rolling roadblock.  With this BMW, I only need a little gap and BLAM, I'm gone.  :D

Same here.  I can't believe how light the steering is on this car.

I'm picking up a new transmission on Friday or Saturday.  Hopefully I can get it put in this weekend.

My stupid "check brake pads" light is on.  I felt the rotors last night and they're grooved out pretty good, so I'm going to be laying in the driveway next week changing pads and rotors.  Yay me.

There's no replacement for displacement.
One engine was a 350 Rocket that was cammed out. (The wagon) The other was a 330, cammed out, with headers, edelbrock intake,  ac removed and electric fan. (the ugly coupe)  I spent many an hour tweaking that Q Jet, changing metering rods, etc. Best calculations was that I was oversquare at about 360 HP. My intentions were to put a 3.73 posi in it and get it all painted up. I sold it when I moved from MN back to Texas.

Yes, I have the disease. It originally was for cars, but spread maliciously to now include boats. At one time it also included airplanes, but, after owning two, I figured out that it is cheaper to rent.
My current fleet of fast cars includes my 650 hp C6 Corvette and my 425 hp Porsche 944 (man, is this ever a sleeper)

Enjoy the pics....................

Sure. It's a '51 5-window. Solid body. All original glass and interior. Drive train complete but not running. I bought it for a resto project a few years back, but the restored value of these trucks have plummeted and it is not currently economically viable to spend the money it would take. My son wants to make a rat truck out of it, and that may be it's future. All it would require would be to rebuilt the engine, brakes and suspension, and probably a new wiring harness.
I has a cool stainless steel bed liner in it. It was used by a local hotel and they would fill the bed with crushed ice and beer to use at conventions.

Post by: BattleHymn on April 02, 2011, 01:18:56 PM
I like it.  If I didn't need something to actually haul stuff in the bed, I wanted an older truck like that.  I ended up with a 71 Dodge Sweptline, which isn't bad, though. I hope you keep the original motor in it.   :cheersmate:

Yeah, I have a 69 Camaro that I'm doing a LS1 6 speed swap from a 2001 Trans Am, and a 73 Z/28 I'm building for my oldest son with a 5.3l and 4L60e from a Tahoe.
My daily driver is a 2008 Pontiac G8 GT. It has full Kooks exhaust; long tube headers, cats, and cat back. Under drive pulleys, cold air intake, and a shift kit. It's about 425hp at the tires.

Sweet.  I love that formal roofline.

Still looking for a '63-'64 Fairlane.  I have my eye on one but I need to unload a Honda Accord first.

edity edit: I want a '63 but I will settle for a '64.  Number of doors are irrelevant.

Never driven one, but I don't like the look.  All that extra sheetmetal at the back kills the rest of the car.

Overplayed, stale, and uninteresting, and you're paying the Corvette premium on top of looking like everyone else.  Every car show has at least a dozen of them, maybe more.  I suppose you're also one of those hicks that deride four-doors as "two too many".

I've only sat in one fastback Fairlane, and I didn't think it was that bad.  Then again, I wasn't driving it out on the road either, so I'm sure my perception might change if I did.

Do you like the 60s Sedan DeVilles?

My sister had TWO of those, one that looked exactly like that, a cream puff with 50K miles on it she bought from the first owner old lady ($800), and a white one.

Trust me, you don't want to like it.  Terrible, horrible, awful.

What killed the fastback for me was test-driving a '76 Duster.  I couldn't see a damn thing.  Tiny side mirrors, no rear or side visibility.  Damn.

No, I don't care for the DeVille, because the Impala and even the Chevrolet pickup cribbed the nose design a few years later and it's everywhere you look now.  Check out the 1968 Impala... same nose.

Oh, I don't know... I can see the similarities, but I don't think of it in the same lines as say a ChrBentley or the Aston Taurus.  I do know I wouldn't have a 68 Impala though- too vanillla.
