Franken to be declared Senate victor in Minnesota
« on: January 05, 2009, 08:15:18 AM »

By Todd Melby

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - Democrat Al Franken will be declared the winner of the tight U.S. Senate contest in Minnesota, emerging from a ballot recount with a slim margin over Republican Norm Coleman, state officials said on Sunday.

But Coleman, the incumbent, has asked Minnesota's supreme court to require that a few hundred additional absentee ballots be included in the recount -- and he could then ask the court to investigate the contest all over again.

"At the moment, Franken has a 225-vote lead," after the weekend counting of what were deemed the last uncounted absentee ballots, said Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, a Democrat who oversaw the process.

Ritchie said unless the supreme court acts on Coleman's request and orders more ballots to be counted, he will reconvene the state's Canvassing Board on Monday to certify Franken as the winner of the November 4 contest.

what is the point of an election if you game the results like this?   And given Franken's rhetoric over the years, he is going to be one very corrupt politician, and he  started in the dark side already.

the dems get the senate seat, but they also get the excruciating embarrassment that goes with it.  we lose a vote, but get the laughs.  somehow, I feel like this one will go down as a win for us.

Looks like MN decided it's time to send in the clowns.  Even with vote fraud on the typical Cemecratic scale, nearly half of the Minnesotans had to be f'd up enough to vote for this moron in the first place to get it within stealing distance, which means the place is chock full of free-range morons.  I also think this win will become a albatros around the neck for the Dems.

All the same, this has gotta be one of the smallest margins in history -- 225 votes, I believe.

I thought Schade captured it well when she said that this is something that the Repubs need to reach down, take hold of whatever's left, and come back ready to deal.

MN is the state that voted for Jesse Ventura. That's only slightly less ridiculous than Commiefornia's election of the Governator.

heh.  even with the third party candidate, 42% of the electorate voted for him.  of course, that also means that 60% of the electorate voted against him.

Democrat election strategy 101: count and recount votes until you're ahead, then stop counting and declare victory.

Thank the Als: Gore and Franken.  Two birds of a feather flocking together and shitting all over the U.S. Constitution.

it's almost unbelievable that coleman couldn't beat franken.  I suspect that at least part of the problem is that he was a fairly crappy candidate.

the end draws nigh.

Supreme Court denies Coleman’s suit to stop certification of election

The Minnesota Supreme Court issued an order late Monday morning (pdf) denying an emergency motion from the Norm Coleman campaign to stop the State Canvassing Board from certifying the vote in the statewide Senate recount. That clears the way for the canvassing board to certify this afternoon that Al Franken received the most votes in the Nov. 4 election as determined by the recount that followed.

In its order, the court wrote that “the threshold question before us in this motion is whether disputes over rejected absentee ballots can be resolved in this automatic recount proceeding, or whether they must await an election contest proceeding.”

Only “obvious errors in the counting or recording of the votes” that all sides could agree on, the court said, should be fixed in the recount that the canvassing board will certify today. All other disputes belong in a court action called an election contest that either side may file within seven days of certification.

The order today carried Associate Justice Alan Page’s signature. As with earlier recount issues, the two members of the court who are currently serving on the State Canvassing Board — Chief Justice Eric Magnuson and Associate Justice G. Barry Anderson — did not take part in considering or deciding the question. All legal filings before the court related to the recount are available online.

Well, when you look at some of the shit that went down.  Like that ballot that was clearly marked for Coleman, but some genious Judge decided it was a vote for Franken...

This was such a shady win that I'm simply disgusted.  Our founding fathers have got to be rolling in their graves over this whole election.

At the beginning of this mess, I mentioned that this would follow the lead of Gregoire's victory over Rossi - that they would count and recount until Franken was in the lead, then prevent any further counting, and it seems they did just that.

Well, you know what, let all the Dems go down together Hindenburg Style. Oh The Huge Manatee.

It's not just that.  If you read some of the comments, they hate EVERYTHING Republican.  One thinks we should be hunted down.  I wonder with what guns.  Everyone knows libs and guns don't mix.  When Al frankenstein, who was SELECTED(remember that one DUmmies?) makes an ass of himself, I think it'll go nicely for us.
