This to me looks like the work of an armed irregular to say the best. I still haven't heard anything as to distance and number of rounds fired, but I doubt this shitbag was doing anything close to a 1 MOA grouping, or shooting outside of 300 meters.
That being said, my experiences in Tal Afar and Ar Ramadi showed me that even an idiot with an AK at 200 meters can make life difficult for troops in contact in a city. And from what little I've seen from the footage, it was in a heavily urban area.
This idiot was in an engineer company in the reserves allegedly. That is not a 'sniper'. All this attack was, was a dedicated shitbag with his rifle and hatred of 'whitey' to sustain him. The same thing happened on multiple occasions in Iraq. And while they may have caused casualties, it was no where near what a trained sniper can do.
Sadly, what we saw last night was a coordinated urban ambush with a defensive position. Not necessarily a sniper attack. One of the primary skill sets of the sniper is to exfiltrate without getting captured. This guy obviously skipped that portion of the correspondence course.
Sorry about the rant. I hate the media blowing this out of proportion to blame an essential skill set of the military, just to scare people and sell their "if it bleeds, it leads' headlines.
