I know you may have told me this before, but do you personally know Bonkers Beth? I ask because in a thread I was browsing through on The Island yesterday she claimed to be "a woman of color" and I wondered what color that might be.
Yes and no.
I do know this bit about the cop-hating Doug's ex-wife being of Central American origin is bull excrement; photographs of herself, posted by her, show her to be of unmistakeably northern Mediterraneanic origin.
As you know, the cop-hating Doug's ex-wife is a lapsed Roman Catholic, but once born a Catholic, always a Catholic. No matter how hard one tries to erase it, one can't erase it. It's always there. There are some lapsed Catholics who have gone onto purposeful and fulfilling lives, but those are the ones who generally feel positive about their past.
"Identification with victims" is a strong tendency within Catholicism; I have it myself; this "sharing in suffering" deal. As compared with the Judeo-Protestant tendency to improve the material lot of the suffering.
But the difference between the cop-hating Doug's ex-wife and franksolich is that she fantasizes she is a "victim," that she is a "person of color," while franksolich, who has no fantasies about himself, actually attempts (but this being America, the best place in the world, it falls short) to live the grim, austere, spartan, ascetic life that tens of millions, hundreds of millions, suffering under socialism, are forced to live.
But it's still not the same, for franksolich. For franksolich, living this way is a choice, and franksolich can change his mind any time he wishes. Tens of millions, hundreds of millions, suffering under socialism do not have that choice.
