Title: primitives to be further analyzed
Post by: franksolich on February 07, 2008, 03:33:42 PM
Hot damn.

John Matrix here found me a new anthropologist, one of whom despite my degree in British history, I never heard, Sir Edward Tylor, 1832-1917.  Or maybe he was described to me, but I wasn't paying attention.

This guy was pre-Margaret Mead, and created the science of "cultural anthropology."

And, as we all know, the primitives on Skins's island are definitely a sui generis sort of culture.

I contacted the library in the "big city," and yes, they had the guy's monumental work, a two-volume set, Primitive Culture.  I'll go there Friday morning.

Took cultural anthropology in college for an elective. Pretty interesting, all that primitive tribal stuff.

What's cool about it is that, while the primitives love and adore and revere Margaret Mead, if they knew Sir Ed, the primitives would Hate him.....even though Mead relied a great deal upon him for her own work.
