Title: 20 discontinued cars that need to come back
Post by: franksolich on October 13, 2014, 02:11:06 PM
http://www.rantcars.com/2014/09/02/15-discontinued-cars-that-should-be-brought-back/

It's a slide show, little text.

I was surprised at some of the selections.  The Chevrolet Nova?  The Ford El Camino?

Chevrolet El Camino: Best pickup ever to go after something in....just not worth a damn to bring it back in.

Other than the nice-looking Fiat 124 and the Toyotas, I'm going to have to say no.

It's been a rumor for a couple of years that Fiat is planning to offer an Italianized Miata for sale in the US.

I owned two Chevy Novas - a 1973, with a 307 cid motor in it and no power brakes. Made driving in the city a serious workout for the right leg/foot. No air, no radio (I added my own 8-track system with 4 speakers that, for me at least, was the bomb), and no carpeting on the floor. It was your basic econobox-minus-more-stuff and I loved that car. It was my first half-assed muscle-car-that-wasn't.

I traded that car in for a brand-new 1978 Chevy Nova. That car had a 305 in it, a 4-speed manual, no radio (I again added my own), Positraction, and an affinity for rust that defied description. The ass end of that car was almost completely devoid of anything approximating suspension and the complete lack of "muscle" in another muscle-car wannabe was palpable. But, it had bucket seats, a tachometer, and a speedometer that went all the way to 85 mph. I was in hog heaven.

The glories of a misspent y'ute.  :stoner:

I always thought the Subaru Brat was a cheap knockoff of the El Caminos and Rancheros.

The Nova was a good car for a young guy to keep running on a shoe string. My brother in law had one for some 20 years. Parts are everywhere and so easy to work on. The rest you can keep!

I *loved* my MR2- Mark III (the same as in the photo).

But it was so low to the ground that all you could hear from my wife and I getting in and out was groans.  You didn't get in it, you put it on.

It is actually a pretty good list.  Some of those could come back today with few changes.

Ahhh, the memories of the summer my uncle turned my cousin and me loose on the east coast with a Karman Ghia.  Definitely upped our cool factor back in the 70s.

The Pacer was about as cool as the PT Cruiser/Geezer/Loser.  I used my PT Cruiser for hunting (I could easily fit an antelope or deer in the back and it was lower than a truck), hauling my ranch gear to gathers, and "tailgating" out of the back end at branding lunches.  I always said it was the "Ranch Edition" Cruiser.  But enviable it was not.

I will be glad when all the PT Cruisers have disappeared from our roads.  A more hideous, ugly junkmobile has not been seen in a long time.  Even the unattractive Pontiac Aztek was less offensive.

Dead wildlife would only improve that nasty car.

I agree with every word of that.  One has to be pretty secure with his or her self to drive one.  Or have a really good sense of humor.  Or both.  :D

Dead game meat improves every vehicle, though.

The list definitely favors sports cars, and I have to say I have always loved the looks of the Countach.  My own list would include the classic Wiilys/Kaiser Jeep and its successor, the CJ5, as well as the classic big-fendered Land Rover...as well as the Ford F100 with no useless electric accessory crap to break on it, just a hauler with stickshift and a radio.

If I had my druthers, Nissan would bring back the 280ZX under the Datsun name.  Light, fast, and comfortable.  Yeah, they're still selling the 370Z, but the 280ZX was the hair band version that I loved.

Honda did bring back the CRX in 2012 in the form of the CRZ.

I saw one of those in traffic today.  I almost thought it was the Honda Insight until I got a better look.

My wife had a Fiat 124 Sport Spider when I met her.

Even a heavy fog would keep it from running.   :thatsright:

FIAT=Fix It Again Tony

I had an X1/9.  Beautiful car (designed by Pinnafarina).  The car actually read the warrant so it knew to break down a week after the warranty expired.  Nothing but problems for a few years until I got rid of it.

But man, was it cool.

Slick Willy claimed to have an El Camino with astroturf in the back when he was a 'yute.
For that reason alone it should die an ignominious death.

edit add.

My DI at Parris Island said he had a ""pick-up"" with astroturf in the back for "certain females". I guess slick willy had the same idea.  :-)

What about the Pacer does not fit with what drivers want in 2015 and beyond?

Really?  Seriously??  I think I'll pass on your "rally inspired handling".

And did anyone else notice the camber problem on #8?
