You're referring to the protests over the new work standards for 27-year olds and below.  A bunch of people were protesting the fact that these kids could be axed from their job for any reason without reprisal.  But the protests were aggravated by the anarchist components that came out when the peaceful protests were winding down in the evenings and then began to light cars on fire, bust out storefront windows and throw Molotov cocktails at police in really affluent neighborhoods.  It was a way for the progressives in the country to attempt to influence the kids who were protesting and make the media types in the rest of the world believe that French austerity measures in the government were responsible for the riots.  It didn't work, however.
