Where have you been?
« on: March 26, 2012, 06:28:24 PM »
On a lighter side of general topics....

Where have you been in the continental US that you think most folks haven't (places that most folks have probably at least heard of).

For me, off of the top of my head...

The Jelly Belly factory.

Niagra Falls.

Stone Mountain.

Baseball Hall of Fame.

Football Hall of Fame.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Statue of Liberty.

Pier 39.

Coke-a-Cola Museum.

Disney World.

Disney Land.

Hersey PA. (yes, the candy factory).

Mount Washington
Bar Harbor Arcadia
Walt Disney World

Your mom's house.

Oh, no--most people have DEFINITELY been to her house.  The original question is places most people HAVEN'T been.

But as for me:

Lake Powell
Four Corners Nat'l Monument (don't ask me why)
Canyon de Chelly, AZ
Chaco Canyon, NM
Acoma Pueblo, NM
Yellowstone (EAST side, coming in from Cody)
Mount Rushmore
Jerome/Sedona
Death Valley
Astoria, OR
Craters of the Moon
Pittsburg, NH
The English-speaking parts of Los Angeles
Pissing in the geyser in Soda Springs, ID

And yes, I have indeed, "Seen Rock City".

I went up in the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, and saw the World Trade Center and Madison Square Gardens.  The memory is hazy about all of those though. It was during a weekend party trip to NYC.

The Alamo
Texas Rangers Museum
International Peace Gardens
Mission San Juan Capistrano
USP  Leavenworth
Santa Catalina Island
Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
Deadwood south Dakota
Mt. Rushmore

I'm sure there are a few more but memory fails at the moment. Strange as it may seem I've probably been to more places in Europe than in the States.

You will note most of the places I mentioned were in the West, where I was born and raised.  Here in NE?  Not so much.

I've been to Jerome/Sedona/Prescott, AZ.  So beautiful in those areas.  Jerome is my favorite and can't wait to go back again sometime soon.... if gas prices ever go down.

I haven't been anywhere unique and don't travel as much as I used to.  I love the Outer Banks and it's hardly an exclusive locale these days, but the only interesting place was Alaska (Anchorage, Homer, Soldotna, Soldovia, and Ekwok).  Unless you count the flight to Anchorage, I have never been more than 50 miles west of the Mississippi River.

I need to get out more.

Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty on the same trip)
Boulder Dam
Chicago Museum of Science & Industry, and the Aquarium
New Orleans streetcars
Library of Congress, National Archives, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and Washington Monument in DC
Boston Common
Fort Sumter and USS Yorktown (CV 18) in Charleston
US Air Force Museum in Ohio
Gettysburg battlefield, several times
Annual Christmas Day 'Washington Crossing the Delaware' reenactment in NJ
Fredericksburg-Chancellorsville Campaign battlefield
St. Louis Gateway Arch (Didn't go up in it, though)
The Alamo
Independence Hall in Philly
Zeppelin hangars at Lakehurst (formerly NAS, some other alphabet soup now)
...and a bunch of others.

In The past there were a few days when I swam in the Ocean , rode dirt bike in the desert, skied on a mountain and water skied on the Colorado river all on the same day. One of the few benefits of living in So. Cal.

So do i. Of course money is an issue and time  and of course a good travel buddy. Those of us, who have been stationed on military bases have an edge. On leave, they would grab a few buddies, get a car and take off, and go anywhere within a four hour driving period, and see all kinds of stuff. I would have done that anyway...
