Are they using cheap illegal alien labor?

I just had to ask. You know, republican, conservative, capitalists getting rich off the labor of the masses blah, blah, blah, etc.. :-)
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

As I remember the last time their server went down this
long it was because the Host company didn't do any P.M. and the
fans were clogged with dust kittys and the heat smoked it .
They were supposed to ported to a new more modern server but who knows what they are on now .

Thanks Meg, I was wondering WTF was going on.
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

Are they washing off the stains left by the ronbots?  That could take some time.

If all this was planned, as the posts makes it sound, why was it not announced so the members would be aware of the downtime and maybe get excited about the changes?  To just disappear unannouced on a Friday afternoon seems sort of cheesy and now seems plain dishonest.

CU has had crashes almost every year, which explains why there are no posts before 2005. I remember CU was down in 2005 and they had a temporary forum for a couple weeks and was restored with a clean slate.

I'm with you Rebel...I think this is some sort of epic disaster for them, and they are attempting to hang onto their members...or at least what's left of them.....

We have two mirrored SATA drives. If a drive fails, the other one has all the information needed. We also have a 3rd SATA drive sitting in the 3rd bay of the server. I couldn't connect it because I only had two SATA connections. I could have connected it via IDE and gone with a better RAID, but what we have is sufficient. One drive dies, the other keeps working. The spare is used to replace the dead drive and we copy all information over to the new drive. They trash the bad drive and I send'em a new one to put into the spare slot. A drive failure wouldn't bring us down. A SATA controller, yes, but it damn sure wouldn't take 6 days.

Oh, and I still have my account at Dreamhost and Go Daddy. Our server fails, we do a temp move back to the old host until the problem is resolved.

Ain't it somethin' how this discussion can go on here? I'm sure should such a thing happen here we would be welcome to have the same discussion there.  :hyper: :innocent:

I know next to nothing about web hosting servers, but what you describe is exactly the way my video server RAID works.....I have ten 73.6 Gb drives, and if one fails, I simply unplug it and hot-swap a new drive in....takes the system about 30 minutes to configure and load the new drive, but the process is invisible to the output.....

Sounds like you have a SCSI system. We went the cheap way and used SATA drives. SCSI controllers aren't cheap. ..but yeah, works about the same.    :-)

We have two drives doing exactly the same thing. One dies, the other still works. We remove the dead drive and replace it with the spare. Bring it online and everything from the working drive should copy over to the new drive. Then I replace the dead drive with a new one, to be put back into the spare slot. If the controller goes bad, that controls the, well, we'll say "bus", then we'll move to Dreamhost or Go Daddy until we get the server back up and running. Keep in mind, SATA controllers don't just go out. We'll probably replace the server before that happens.

Oh, and we download backups for both sites on a daily basis.

It could also be a major hardware problem requiring a move to another server and while downloading the software they also decided to go with
an new release/update.

Those latest and greatest software updates and new releases are always last to be loaded when up and running.

Let me explain it to you.  The main bone's connected to the spare bone.  The spare bone's connected to the main bone.  Both bones' connected to the control bone.  And it all goes round 'n round.
