The first time I went down a cliff was strapped to some guy's back harness so he could demonstrate an Australian style rappel...made my solo venture down the cliff a whole lot less scary. :o

Speaking from experience ,you haven't really rappelled until you go down Australian. It's the best thing ever.

I trained ROTC cadets for a year. Lots of rappelling, including Australian. I also strapped coeds to my back for rope descents.   :wink: :-)

We made a trip to Boulder, CO that included rappelling at the Amphitheater. One of my MS1 cadets broke her knee, and we had to bring her down in a Stokes basket.

Yeah, it was quite an exhiliarating experience.  The best parts about ROTC Advanced Camp were those kinds of days, and all the weapons ranges.

Good grief, a broken knee sounds like a potential commission killer, if she didn't recover fully.  Worst thing that happened at camp was one of the girls let go of the rope suspended over 40' water, BEFORE she was given permission by the interrogators.  She ended up with two black eyes.  Lotsa chicks went through the course with little to no upper body strength-me they had to pull off the chin up bars so everyone else could go eat in the mess hall.

I'm guessing you didn't strap many male cadets on your back for a descent demo.  That big bastid picked me cuz I was the thinnest-or so he claimed. :whistling:

I've had to pay for the pleasure of doing this a couple of times. Back some few years ago you could get a jump off the bungy tower and a "rap jump" with "locals" discount pretty cheap.
