Bijou,  I'm curious, did you ever get your Kindle?  (I love mine)
I haven't yet (by coincidence I've just replied to the other thread!) I am lusting after one. They're now available with wifi and 3G and I think I'll end up buying one, the free books look good and I do quite a bit of travelling/commuting for work so I'd get good use from it. The difficulty would be giving up the feeling of 'owning' a book but given that my house is full that may be a good thing.

I say go for it.  I worried about giving up DTB's (dead tree books) myself but I've been won over.  I keep some of my heart favorites and leather bounds, but anything that I would buy in paperback, I buy on my kindle.  I adjust real well and it is easy to read anywhere with.  My first was a K2US, but I got the 3G & Wifi K3 when they came out.  Traveling, I  recommend the 3G & Wifi version over the Wifi only.

Mrs E got me a 3G Kindle for my birthday. I gotta get through my DTBs first before I dive into it, but it looks interesting enough.

One of the reasons I want the iPad. It has the Kindle App and so much more.

I got the old lady and iPad for her birthday last year, and she absolutely adores it. We checked out the kindle and the other e-readers out there, and she chose to go with the iPad because of the myriad other apps she can run with it, specifically, the Simon's Cat game.  :rotf:

Seriously, though...she never thought she'd become an e-reader, but she spends a great deal of time on the Metrolink to and from work, and the fact that they have WiFi pretty much closed the deal for us.  :hi5:

If you're looking for a real multi use device, so far the ipad looks pretty good.  I was looking for a designated reader.  I love the e-ink, with no glare in the sunlight.  I've got the 3G & Wifi kindle and I love it.  If it were just the Wifi, I'd have to be somewhere that I could pick up wifi, but with the 3G, I can download a book anywhere I can get cell phone reception.  I also like all the freebies.  Hollywood, does your wife check in to Amazon for the daily freebies?

oh Euph, you'll love it.  Amazon has daily freebies, all the classics can be had for free, Webscriptions & Baen Free Library  has SciFi Fantasy out the wazoo and there's the indie authors.  I even named mine ... her name is Bratling (in honor of what Thor calls me  :innocent: )

I dunno, to be honest. The woman has a whole different life going on when she opens that thing. Between FarmVille, reading, and writing her blog, she could be married to some other guy for all I know!  :rotf:

Please don't 'drink and Kindle'.  :lmao:

Quote
Before I first acquired a Kindle, exactly one year ago, I didn't usually buy books while under the influence of alcohol. I won't say I never did it, because that would be a lie. But it wasn't a habit. After a couple of glasses of wine, I tend to fixate on the present. I have no use for five to seven days' delivery time. The Kindle is wonderful for drunk people because you can climb into bed, press one button, and The Anatomy of Melancholy instantaneously materialises before you, plucked by the so-called Whispernet out of the surrounding ether.

The number of books I buy while sober is, I have noticed, inversely proportional to the number I buy while drunk. It's a zero-sum game, as Proust once observed of wet dreams: when all the resources are consumed in the night, none are left for waking life.

Counting free samples and e-books from the pre-1923 copyrightless domain, the total number of books I "purchase" per month has actually gone up by about 200%, while the number of books I purchase while sober has dwindled to about 5% of the total. You used to be able to say that someone's library looked like it had been assembled by a drunk person. Now, for me, the metaphor has become a reality. How does a drunk person's library differ from a sober person's library? There are probably as many answers as there are drunk people, so I can only speak for myself. Here is my personal breakdown of how the symptoms of intoxication correlate to book-buying practices: ...

My problem with the E-Books is that in my family we recycle our books.
I also reread a good deal of them.

I am disturbed to hear that Kindle will delete a book one has paid for, this is theft isn't it.?

I just may amble over to B&M and check out their prices, I take it one must give a credit card number to the company that sends you the books,  :censored: I hate that, makes me not to happy to just give access to our bank account to strangers.

My wife has a Kindle for her b-day.  She loves it.

I've asked her to buy me one for Christmas.

Bijou!  I am soo excited for ya!  :hi5:  :cheersmate:

Vesta111,  the only books Amazon deleted were books that they found out the publisher did not have the rights to publish in the first place .... they did come out and apologize and have been much more vigilant in checking that no copyrights are being broken with the e books they're putting out so it's only been a couple that have been deleted.  I've never had a book deleted.

A neat thing for families or friends who like to share.  You can register up to 6 Kindles or devices to one account, so any kindles on the same account can share books from that account ... even at the same time.

I'm seriously thinking about getting the Nook from Barnes & Noble, the $149 1, no idea why I'm leaning towards the Nook instead of the Kindle. Opinions on whether or not that's a good choice please. Also the 3G, is that only if you want to download books? the Nook I was looking at has wifi, the cheaper Kindle version also, but it still says I can surf the net. Oh, and I just realized, the Kindle has a function where you can put the book on like speaker, not sure if the Nook has that.

Oh, and I was also looking at the Sony E-Reader, it's strictly an E-Reader, no wifi, and I'm kind of liking that idea, I want to use this for reading, I really don't want to use it for internet, the only drawback is the short batter life, I think it's 6 hours, but then if I'm only going to use that for reading and nothing else then maybe the 6 hours is fine. I saw it at bestbuy.com for $99.

I have 2 Sony's- the Pocket Edition and an older 700. They are sturdier than the Kindle or Nook. I like that I can get books anywhere, even Amazon. Someone always finds a way to convert them to epub. :naughty: Amazon and B&N have free ebooks and samples. I've picked up some good ones that way, even current best sellers.   I have the PC and android versions of Kindle and Nook, so I'm covered. :p
I've never had a problem with battery life.

Well I did tons of research yesterday and I'm still leaning towards the Nook, the only thing I'm disappointed with about the Nook is no text to speech feature.

You came to pretty much the same conclusion that I did. They are about $148 @ WalMart(the non-wifi).
