I thought for sure you jumped at it.
There will be another.

Went fishing yesterday. Highs in the upper 60's. Damn, it was nice. This 'Climate Change" stuff is horrible.           :hyper:

We've been getting a good hatch of BWO's on the Feather River. If I have the time* I'll probably go fishing this weekend. This weather is weird, but with a rooted high over Cali, not un-expected.

I know it's a pain, but, a picture now and then of progress would be nice to see.

I'll try to get pics up, I just ordered YLI #004 thread for the rod. I gave up on the "correct" nylon thread (Gudebrod 326/ not made any more) and went with a very close color match in a silk thread. I'll probably end up re-doing the entire rod. Considering both tips are "down" I might as well.

#14's and 16's. Had no time this past weekend, but I should this weekend. I'll probably start on the Granger restoration also.

Oh, speaking of tying flies, this will crack you up. Yes, fly tiers/fishermen are this crazy.

I got  the rod stripped down (used Citri-strip) and Spar-Varnished. The tips (to the right) I'll probably leave alone. They look good enough to just touch up. It'll be a couple of days before the varnish is dried enough to re-wrap the butt and mid sections.

Got the rod done. A couple of closeups of the results:

Luckily I was able to preserve the script on the butt section of the rod. I was also able to match up the wrap color very well. In the middle pic, (bottom pic is, right to left, butt, mid, tips) the wrap that's just above the cork handle is original. The section just above it, the "mid" is completely re-done with new wraps and snake guides. The tips, at the very top of the pic were just left alone and had a coat of varnish put on. Top pic shows the upper portions of the rod where I had to re-wrap the stripper guide, ferrule, and mid ferrule/guides. It also shows where the tips are "down" (short) about 2" from breakage. It's doubtful that that will effect the fish-ability of the rod. Can't wait to fish it!

I have been working on a strange old rod I cannot identify. It has a weird Bakelite twist lock reel seat with nickel hardware and nice nickel ferrules (the reason I choose it for restoration) I has very dark cane that was delaminated so I had to reglue it. I'll get photos up when I get time, maybe you can identify it.

Make sure you get good pics of the seat, ferrules and the winding check, if it's still there.

Its an 8 1/2 ft 3 piece with a nice little swell at the butt. I can't find anything on it and have never seen anything like it.  It was wrapped in orange and black jasper.

The winding check reminds me of a Monty, but the ferrules........ :???:

Maybe not quite so close, better focus. The reel seat, that's a sliding band? Down locking? Any hall/alignment marks on the ferrules, and are they pinned? Any intermediates left?

Cats, got you an answer:

Quote
You have an early Montague Manitou from the late 1920's to early 30's. This Landman style twist locking reel seat was used on the first generation of Manitous, along with those Landman style hand welted ferrules. These welts tend to look like a rolled welt, but they are actually a half moon shaped piece soldered on. These often had an ornately knurled butt cap to match the sliding band. Though the reel seats changed over the years, the typical Manitou sported those Landman style ferrules throughout their production history.

Most of these early Manitous were heat treated, which gave them a rich, dark look to the cane.

The 8 1/2 footer is somewhat rare. Nice find!

Where did you find that? I new it was old as most of the rods from that era had glue problems.

That's kind of a neat rod.
OK you specialists.  What kind of cement is used to repair those things?
I would imagine it would have to maintain some flexability.

I use heat set Epon epoxy.  It allows you to straighten the section and then set it in the oven. I think most makers are using it these days.

That drags up a bunch of other questions.
I better not clutter Wineslobs thread with them.
