Me vs. every Evangelical that I meet.

Me: How old is the earth?

Evangelical: Seven thousand years old.

Me: How old is the universe?

Evangelical: We aren't sure, maybe seven thousand years old, maybe forever.

Me: How long has God been around?

Evangelical: Oh, well, God has been around forever.

Me: So, how can we human earth creatues be THAT important if God has been around for all time and we've only been around for seven thousand years?! How special are we? What was God doing with all of his free time?

* crickets *

I know plenty of Christians who will happily speak of the earth and universe being billions of years old.

It's also stupid to claim eternity and the age of the universe are somehow linked.

Does anyone else pick up on these lame arguments?

No. In fact, except for Mahine, they're all very proud to sign on to this nonsense.

TeamProg hasn't met many evangelicals.  Young Earth Creationists can answer anything between 6000-10000 years old for the earth, and they would probably say the universe is the same age, since Genesis says on the second day God separated the heavens.  Then there are Old Earth creationists who believe the word "day" in Genesis is not a literal 24 hour day, but could mean an undetermined amount of time.  Most evangelicals with a modicum of Biblical knowledge would answer that man is special enough that instead of just speaking us into being like He did the rest of creation, He sculpted Adam from the dirt in His image.

If Teamprog is lurking, feel free to let me know if you would like me to continue.

Time is a creature. God created time, therefore God is outside of time. The age of the Earth and the universe is irrelevant.
