food cravings
« on: January 09, 2014, 02:33:41 AM »
I always had this theory that when one has a craving for some certain food, it's actually the body needing a nutrient it's not getting.

For example, I'm a glutton when it comes to sour cream, although sour cream doesn't even rate as one of my top ten favorite foods; I dine upon it as if ice cream.

I suspect it's because there's some nutrient or trace element in sour cream that this body needs, but isn't getting.  I have no idea what it would be, but it's obviously present in sour cream.

Before I go any further, I should point point out that I'm no connoisseur, no bon vivant; to me, food's just a fuel, like gasoline to an automobile.

I came from a family of high-livers when it comes to food, and thus far I've happily avoided their fates, being spared the ailments and afflictions of affluenza and the too-easy, too-comfortable, too-secure, style of life.  It's obvious others in other families can live decadently with only little ill effect, but in my own genetic bloodline, it appears decadence kills, and so I don't want to have anything to do with it.

Tonight, about 1:00 a.m., I awoke with an insatiable desire for milk.  As I have no cholesterol, blood pressure, or weight problems, I drink only the real thing, only 100% whole milk.

There is always kept at least four gallons of milk in this refrigerator, which on average lasts me circa five days.

So when I woke up, I was safe, with that inventory; I could satisfy the longing.

Well, that was an hour and a half ago, and thus far I've finished off one and a third gallons of milk; I think the longing, while not yet completely satisfied, is pretty much satisfied now.

But I wonder what trace element or nutrient there is in milk, that my body was screaming for.

(about five hours later)

Of course, the disadvantage is that one woke up three times the next four hours, to unload the bladder, but still, that's a small price to pay for satisfying an intense craving.

I too hold a strong belief that infrequent cravings are manifested by some nutrient/vitamin/mineral deficit.
For me the effect is enhanced when the mere thought of the craved food causes my mouth to water.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Calcium maybe?  I very rarely crave a particular type of food, but when I do, I get it.  I think I must sometimes get low on iron, or potassium, because my cravings are usually for spinach, steak, or fish.

Aha.  You get what I mean, madam.

It's like people who crave chocolates; one suspects it's not the chocolate that their body's demanding, but some trace element or nutrient in the chocolate.  It's too bad it can't be then identified, so they can take that, instead of rotting their teeth and expanding their gut getting it through chocolate,

Well, there's always baker's chocolate.
Never had much of a craving for that though.

I think there must be differences in how people perceive cravings and that sometimes desires are thought of to be cravings.

Sure..essential amino acid deficiencies, salt ions, etc. are chemical triggers by the brain to uptake these substances..

It is being put forward now that these are genotypical triggers for certain compounds that allele type needs for optimum cell function, etc.

Shutting down....it's time for breakfast here.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Age is a determining factor too. I dont eat red meat any more but was a devout steak man in my younger days .  Ive taken to grinding my own sausage which I use to make almost everything . From pasta sauce to an ingredient in my new found love of Jambalaya .
Chicken recipes and prep ways are also big with me now . And I also have taken to cooking almost everything in butter.  Nothing as tasty as a boneless chicken breast cooked in an egg pan with some parsley and a dash of lemon pepper. And the grand finale of cooking with real butter .  It can be cooked until it starts to caramelize.
Now me hungry . Guess I'll go downstairs and make some bacon and eggs .  Does my old soul good ..
