but i know it's the first wookie's fault.

DC is going to be going all Detroit shortly.  Lots of buildings are built without moveable glass and obese folk don't do stairs well.  Could become the capital Katrina moment for Obie, aka Hotspur.  Call the furries Obie but will they come?  

I am camping by a lake myself so if it gets too hot I can just go jump in it! :rotf:

Yep, went through Andrew. Still remember snaking through a maze of powerlines to get to my mother's house and the smell of rotting chicken in my dad's freezer(he evacuated with his wife at the time to northern Florida). Don't remember exactly how long it was, but it was a good week if not more.

Yep we went without in the same storm he got for about a day. Our water worked and we had a breeze that first night and we had food to eat. We were grateful for those things.

Notice he's doing his bitching on a damn iphone...now that's 3rd world right there I tell ya :rofl:

Stinkbait should try having to deal without power for 10-13 days while you wait for the streets to be cleard from all the ice that fell the night before. Back in October of 1997 we had an ice storm that killed 8,000 trees in Omaha alone and closed of streets for days. Try getting anyone to fix your power during that little adventure. Also we didn't have a generator then only two fire places to keep warm and fortunatly we had a stack of wood to get us through the first week till someone with a truck could get to us and we live in town. Also we were lucky enough to have a gas stove and were able to use it to heat food .

That sounds an awful lot like the ice storm we had around here in 2009.  We didn't get power back for 16 days.  I remember they called out the National Guard to help clear things.

Here is the thing that gets me... they are all into globull warming crap, renewable energy, et-freaking-cetra and this will be the end result. Nobody having any power the hottest/coldest day of the year. So how's that working out for ya dummies? This is what you want? Your little toys not working? No AC? Well you will get it. Me? I like looking across the mountain and seeing the big coal fired power plant there churning out watts by the millions while I turn the AC to 72 when it is 100 degrees and 75 percent humidity outside.

I had 11 days without electricity or heat from that storm. Was iced in the first 4-5 days. I kept part of the house warm with portable propane heaters, and was able to cook and heat water on the stove for washing dishes and bathing.

Power outages here are few and far between, but you need to be ready for them on the farm.  We went without power once in 1978 for 27 hours, and again in 1994 after an ice storm, when the power was off for 51 hours.  Both times, we used a 40,000 watt, tractor driven generator to keep things going on the farm.  We had purchased it 2 years prior, for just such an occasion.  Cows have to be milked, on THEIR schedule, not yours, and not the power company's.

I cut enough wood during the 1994 storm to heat my house for the next 2 years, just clearing the road from my house to the highway.

Today, if things get nasty, I got a 4000 watt generator to power my camper with, and enough propane to heat it thru next year.  I've already filled its water tanks, and its fridge and pantry is stocked.  Worse comes to worse, I'll hook to it and "go somewhere".  It's called "being prepared", stinkdude.  Look into it sometime.  Barry isn't always going to be there to wipe your ass.

Well, here's my take on this, seeing as I'm in Springfield, VA, so about 60 miles from Stinky...

After Snowmageddon in 2010, I told my hubby "we should buy a generator".  We didn't.
After the ice storm in January 2011, when hubby and kids (I was out of town on business) lost power for 24 hours, I said "We should buy a generator".  We didn't.
While waiting for Hurricane Irene last August, I said "We should have bought a generator". We didn't.

In hour 30 of our power outage this weekend, as I threw out a freezer full of meat and veggies, I dropped the drippy, stinky mess on the patio in front of him and said "Go to Home Depot and order a #&%@ generator TODAY!!"  It will be delivered to the store this coming weekend.

My neigbhors have generators, but it didn't occur  to me to ask for a few amps, because we didn't get off our lazy asses and buy one when we should have.  The house stayed quite comfortable (thanks to the new windows we bought last summer), and we were able to stay in communication via my business BlackBerry, which I kept recharged in my big ass, gas-guzzling, Earth-killing SUV.

Power came on at the 37 hour mark, and all is well, except we'll be eating tuna and peanut butter until I get to the store (waiting for roofer right now). 

I never once felt that I was living in a third world country, but I did, for a very brief moment, want to send my hubby to one.  :rofl:
