I wondered that, too.  Kids say stupid things that come back and bite them on the hip pockets once in a while.  Mine would have been in trouble for blabbing something like this.  Then I would have told them, "It will pass.  I guess you had to learn this the hard way.  You'll be okay."

I have never heard that birth control pills were efficacious for acne. My wife, who is a Nurse, says she thinks it does, but I can't imagine it's an FDA approved use for the drug. But, as always, I could be wrong.

My 18 year old daughter is on birth control for heavy periods. She is on the lowest dose and that seems to be working for her so far. She had terrible periods that lasted close to two weeks every month before she started the pill. I use to have terrible periods too until I had an endometrial ablation. 

This whole story is BS yet DU and the people at Dailykos (well over 500 replies so far) are lapping it up. I read the story to my husband. Didn't tell him where it was from or my opinion and he said it was a bunch of crap. Why are liberals so willing to suspend reality when one of their own spin these tall tales?

Well, I read the article, and I must admit you found a very nice tactful way of letting me know I am wrong. I was wrong, and I'm sorry that I was wrong. But not so sorry as when I have to tell my wife she was right, again.

You as the parent should have been better at raising your kid so that they can and will talk to you. Otherwise your kid or kids are going to spend thier lives in constant therapy.

Ultimately, this is the liberals fault, kpete and you want to know why? You have so convoluted the discussion to what it is really about that we get side-tracked on ridiculous issues. Now is the time, if this story is true, to tell her this is two pronged: first of all a commentator got out of hand and made a comment he regrets out of misplaced passion on the underlying issue and secondly the underlying issue is about whether or not we violate the first amendment rights of religious organizations and compel them to include coverage for certain procedures or medications(depending on its use) that they have objections too.

After that, you handle this matter as you would any other matter between teenagers. It sounds as though there are a group of children who do not like your child and have found anther reason to pick on her. As for how they found out, I would thank one of her 'friends'. Kids that age can be viscious and it's not Rush Limbaugh or conservatives or any daily issues fault that teenagers are behaving like teenagers do. Handle it as you would any other instance of teenage shittiness in my mind and for goodness sake give that child some thicker skin since this won't be the first time she has to deal with 'mean girls'(or boys) and there won't be any big bad conservative out there to blame it on.

Okay, trying to not judge here but why would she be on birth control if she is not sexually active?  I keep open an honest comunication with my daughter for this reason. I was pregnant at 15 with the same man I am with today,( but was unable to support a child) hate that I had to decide but did decide on an abortion. I wouldn't just tell my daughter she has to be protected from my choices in life and put her on bc because of it. Now if its because of a history of female problems, ie, irregular periods ect. I would think that would have been part of your original post. But at that age, girls brag, and I can assure you she most have told so called friends or this would not even be an issue worth posting.

I do know some women take them for irregular periods; I would have been a candidate in my teens and early 20's, but I did not like the side effects of prescription bc. A girl does not have to be sexually active to take it, but I do think I"ve seen it prescribed far too quickly in many instances. Periods are irregular when you are a teenager generally because your body still hasn't figured out the whole regulating hormone thing, especially during a period of rapid changes to the anatomy. To me it seems like an extreme fix for a normal part of the female reproductive development. I know others will disagree, but I'm not a big believer in fiddling with the cycles if you can live with an irregularity here and there while the stage passes. I'm of the frank school of medicating so keep that in mind and with your grain of salt when I post of such things

I would like to put in my two cents here...Teenage girls can be mean. These kind of happenings have been going on for years. Instead of a mother encouraging her to go on birth control, she should have been encouraging abstinence and selfrespect instead.

Acne is a part of growing up, so what are guys supposed to do when they have serious acne??? They live with it and use acne cleansers. I mean seriously people, what young teenage girl in her right mind would tell her doctor the truth?? Not many teenagers will admit they are sexually active to their doctor.

Yeah, we did too and everyone knew who was using it for what reasons and the only time it was used to sting was generally if it was known that the girl was taking it to protect against pregnancy and even then, girls usually only threw that crap out there when they were fighting and being catty ie they didn't really believe what they were saying they were just being b*tchy at the moment. and this was back in the 80's no less when there was probably more stigma.

I could not take chemical bc either...it was like being in constant PMS. I hated it.

I have to agree, I was raised in a pretty darn Red State and even in the late 60s, nobody would have thought anything of it...nor did I with my own daughter 30 years later, even well-centered people make relational mistakes, and I'd much rather she was on the pill than struggling to support both herself and a living memento of some dumbshit loser whom she thought was cute, edgy, and interesting one night in her junior year of HS.
