I blew up at a hateful racist today...

I'm not proud of this, but I totally lost my cool.

I was at the VA for a doctor's appointment. I was sitting in the back, reading my nook while a few were commenting about the politics of the day. It was typical of teabagger type talk and normally it doesn't get me worked up. I can blow it off because I know the types. It's just not worth it.

One lady had said the "I'm not racist, but..." when she talked about Mexicans. I still let it go.

Then she said this...

"Gawd sent Katrina to clean out New Orleans"

I lost it. I told her she was crazy. Almost two thousand men, women, and children died. I called her ****ing crazy again and stormed off. I was so livid at the hate-filled talk that I couldn't stomach being in the same waiting room.

My mother is a RW nutjob on so many levels along with her birther type mentality (which I think she's finally starting to realize the insanity of it), but even she found this woman's notions startling. My mother was stunned to hear this when I told her about it.

That lady is effing crazy.

on edit: I'm normally not like this. Anyone who knows me knows that I normally keep my two cents to myself.

The South ranks low on nearly every economic and social indicator. The schools are the worst in the nation. Unemployment, poverty, out-of-wedlock births, high abortion rates, high dropout rates....I could go on and on. And yet, people continue to vote against their best interests, proudly electing Republicans whose policies are destroying this country.

Well, guess that depends on what you consider "smart" and how that smart is being measured. Every school has criteria for pumping up their scores. Some don't include those students who score below a certain level, deciding they're "special needs".

There are different types of intelligence and some are more useful than others. I'd rather my sons learned to shoot a gun than shoot their mouths off. I was a lit major, my husband was an engineering major. I can talk plot, character, and message all day and thoroughly enjoy it. My husband can't spell his way out of a paper bag. He works on multimillion dollar equipment and I raise chickens and make jewelry. Who do you think has the better "education".

Well, to my credit, when I got done with my pissed off feminist phase I adopted the motto "never underestimate the power of a pretty little red dress"! Got me further than reading Faulkner. Guess it's my version of street smarts...hey it netted me a former cowboy turned engineer! Still works today so it was a pretty good choice.

Give me someone with common sense over some snooty intellectual who couldn't catch a fish if you put it on the damn hook for them. Just keep them in their ivory towers and the hell out of my life.

Are you referring to state or district assessments, as unless they are outright cheating on state assessments (and there are very few that get away with that), then there is no way to pump up a score.

They also HAVE to include students on an IEP (per the NCLB Act), however they are scored in their own cohort/subgroup.

Case in point--yesterday one of the contractors (who is black) and I were talking about the (ahem) demographic in NH, and I mentioned that I wasn't always comfortable with it.  I even joked that there were so few black people in NH that people wouldn't know how to react to him, whereupon we both chuckled at it.  He knew I wasn't your typical suburban white-bred, especially when I told him where my grandparents lived (67th and Arlington--South Central LA), where my parents and I lived when I was a child (Inglewood/Hawthorne), etc. 

No Klan sheets, no burning crosses, no words of hate exchanged.  Just a joke or two.  Amazing how that works.

Well, perhaps the rules have changed...this was many years ago. IMO public school is the armpit of the country. But when my son was in school, he did have an iep (what an absolutely ridiculous test that was) and they were allowed to leave off some of these students' standardized test scores. Why bother having them take the test then? Nine times out of ten these are kids who don't learn in traditional ways but from what I saw (I volunteered in their classrooms...for the brief time they were there, when my sons went to school, I went to school) these are very intelligent with too many "busy work" assignments. Either give an accurate portrait of a school/district/state and how their students are doing or don't bother.
