Still no Nemesis of the Bostonian Drunkard yet, the bobbling primitive.

Was she a member then? I have to say I didn't know much about that poster until I came here. I now recall some people making fun (if you will) of her similar to how y'all do here. The whole being homeless but never missing a beat on DU thingy. I am not sure if I ever interacted with her, but I wonder if she was at DU at that time. IF she was, she must have missed that thread. I wonder if she'd be all over CP or sympathize like so many did in that thread (me kind of included :cringe:).

134. The feelings you have towards the homeless are harsh, to say the least.

"I wanted her to vanish. I felt embarrassed to know her. I wanted to drop through the floor. I don't want them in my life."

You should do what I do - volunteer work once a week in a homeless shelter....May help relieving some of those feelings of repulsion you carry towards the unfortunate.

141. You are a bad person, based solely on your emotional responses

Seriously, change the name of the OP from "CaliforniaPeggy" to "Friend_o'_Peg". What would you say to this hypothetical DUer? Sump'n like...

1. You can't get upset with yourself for having an emotional reaction--those are by definition irrational.

2. There's a very good chance that part of your brain was reminding you to draw an appropriate boundary with a socially challenged person.

3. The fact that you felt bad about wanting to get rid of them speaks well to your character. Your gut instinct was as strong toward not rejecting their needs as it was to not letting someone into you home who might distract from the purpose of your meeting.

Here in Houston I've worked with the homeless and with socially challenged people. It's never easy and it makes sense that you might not want to tackle the issue in the middle of a social gathering. I'm also guessing that you gave yourself permission to to feel that way because you knew there were others at the gathering who could offer the more direct support you might have wanted to give this poor woman.

Of course not having a homeless shelter nearby does present a logistical problem. I suggest in the future applying the "drunk on the floor" litmus test for how far to go in helping people. If someone passes out drunk on the ground, you shouldn't pick them up off the ground, because that makes it harder for them to get the help they need. But it is humane to put a blanket over them to keep them warm.

In this case that might mean buying someone a cab for that 15 mile trip to the shelter (or driving them yourself) instead of offering your home to someone who has trouble with competently living independently.

156. Interesting that you posted that.

The neighbor I was referencing upthread ran a pretty good con game with our neighborhood for a while. No Christmas presents because there wasn't any money, very little food for the kids, you get the drift.

So, a bunch of us chipped in and put gifts and giftcards in the mailbox and on the porch so that the children could have a Christmas.

A few years later, marriage broke up and dad paid $345,000 for a house....CASH.

It certainly left me a bit jaded for a bit. The $150 Target gift card I bought them could have gone to someone who truly needed it.

170. The aforementioned bank manager wrote down the balances of the first ten homeless people to walk into her bank the day after she first told this to us. The LOWEST balance was $42,000 and change. That's about ten times what's in my checking account. Imagine how I'd be doing if I didn't pay any income taxes. Two of them had over $100K.

I will never again give money to people who beg for a living. I might be bypassing some truly needy types, but I have no way of knowing anymore and I absolutely refuse to run the risk of helping these conmen assholes.

I dunno.

It sounds more credible than some of the whoppers Doug's ex-wife tells.

My mother signed up for a cooking class at a local community college.  She's been cooking all her life and has worked in resorts and hotels in France and Englad, so she's no beginner when it comes to whipping up some tasty food.  The class she's in serves their food to the homeless instead of tossing it out at the end of the day.  They have a set theme every week that they use... some days it's Mexican, some days it's home-style cooking.  Those men eat pretty well.

185. I think what she meant was it's upsetting for her. She's not indicating that she doesn't care about the homeless, but more that there is a very primal reaction for her and it's upsetting.

The California piggy primitive needs counseling for a Hell of a lot more than just her selfish insensitivity.

192. Consider that people have reactions that are different from responses.

Reactions happen to us, and Peggy was honest about hers.

Responses are different. They are the actions we think through.

I've had the same reaction to my own mother when she wss drunk and ugly. And that wasn't wrong, it was just there. My response to her after thought and checking in with good friends who didn't judge me -- that was something else again.

197. Oh, baloney.

She posted at DU about her "reactions." Those reactions warrant appropriate reaction. My reaction was appropriate...and probably shared by others who want to say what I said, but are afraid to, because of the persona that CalPeggy puts forth on DU.

Some "reactions" deserve to be judged. Saying that one wishes a homeless person to disappear, that they don't want homeless people in their lives, is a reaction that deserved my response. And I was much more diplomatic in my response than what I would have said, had I posted as my initial inclination directed me.

Make it what you like, spin the semantics. Doesn't change the fact that a supposed DEMOCRAT wrote the OP, and another DEMOCRAT found the OP to be offensive.

I think it came from "I wanted her to vanish... I felt embarrassed to know her... I wanted to drop through the floor..."

and especially, "I want to help the homeless, but I don't want them in my life..."

I love CalPeg as much as anyone in the Lounge and I admire her for admitting her feelings in this situation - that took guts and introspection.

But she did indeed pretty much say, let them eat cake with that last line.

One thing I got out of all of this was further confirmation of a suspicion I've had ever since I got to know Doug's stupid ex-wife, at the time the "sfexpat2000" primitive.

Doug's stupid ex-wife is definitely a cultist of the personality.

It doesn't matter what one does, it doesn't matter what one says.

All that matters is who one is.

As Maddy McCall pointed out at this campfire, if it had been some primitive Doug's ex-wife didn't like, Doug's ex-wife would've skewered the primitive for having such sentiments.

But, because it was the California piggy primitive, and because Doug's ex-wife likes the California piggy primitive, the sentiments were okay.

Ah, Beth.

By the way, I've looked all over Skins's island and notice an absence.  This past week was the fifth anniversary of the death of the late red round one, and on previous anniversaries, there had been campfires burning in his memory, a reunion of the Andyites (many of whom no longer hang around Skins's island, or if they do, only rarely).

But this year, none.

Alas! for the late red round one! Alas! Forgotten already! Alas!

One wonders what's up with that.
