What was The Fall?
« on: February 27, 2010, 09:49:31 AM »
Another CC'er posed this question in a different thread and I felt it best to break this topic off rather than muddy the original discussion.

What was The Fall?

I suppose it depends on who one asks.

So I'm asking.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

For me--and remember, I'm no Biblical scholar--the Fall occurred when man misused a particular Gift that God gave man, intelligence.

The Fall occurred when man decided he could be just as intelligent, just as wise, just as all-knowing, as God Is.

In other words, it seems to me that Pride (or Arrogance) was the first sin.

The eating of the Apple?

Yeah, for at least chomping on the apple was an allegory.

The Bible is hardly the only text that seeks to describe mankind being out of sorts with the universe in which he finds himself.

Feel free to draw from any source.

EDIT:

The eating of the Apple?

Many ancient cultures claim it was a pomegranate. The fruit is full of seeds and the seeds obviously convey imagery of things growing.

The Semitic word for seed is "zir" from which we draw our word zero and, wouldn't you know it the shape of the number looks like a seed or an egg. Tie this in with the Orphic egg, an egg with a serpent wrapped around it.

The nothingness from which life springs hearkens to the creation story where the universe is brought about from nothingness but within the egg lies man who will emerge a god.

An intriguing concept because we read:

Quote from: Genesis 3:4-5
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Two-sides of the same coin?
