'Buy American' Rider Sparks Trade Debate
« on: January 29, 2009, 05:00:06 PM »

Quote
Proviso Limits Steel, Iron From Abroad
The stimulus bill passed by the House last night contains a controversial provision that would mostly bar foreign steel and iron from the infrastructure projects laid out by the $819 billion economic package.

A Senate version, yet to be acted upon, goes further, requiring, with few exceptions, that all stimulus-funded projects use only American-made equipment and goods.

Proponents of expanding the "Buy American" provisions enacted during the Great Depression, including steel and iron manufacturers and labor unions, argue that it is the only way to ensure that the stimulus creates jobs at home and not overseas.

Opponents, including some of the biggest blue-chip names in American industry, say it amounts to a declaration of war against free trade. That, they say, could spark retaliation from abroad against U.S. companies and exacerbate the global financial crisis.

In a way I can almost agree with this, but OTOH it will likely double or triple the costs of most projects and maybe completely derail some.

EPA, OSHA, Mining laws....steel will cost more than gold.....FDR took us off the gold standard, maybe Obama is going to put us on the steel standard.

Those who are concerned about this have every right to be concerned, most competent economists view the rush to protectionism as the factor that broke world trade and turned a bad recession into the Great Depression, setting up the rise of Hitler when the German economy, just emerging from a terrible local depression caused by years of political turmoil and war reparations, was crushed to the mat again by the collapse of the world trading system.

first off, 'economists' are a big reason why the wests economy is in  the pits..

2ndly, buy america & even tariffs are WHAT BUILT THIS COUNTRY ...

anyone who tells you differently is lying to you...

the USA has had & still has THE most resources on planet earth & for  nearly 400 years,  the entire world has wanted what this continent has had ....now more than ever...

AMERICA FIRST isn't  about unions at all....it was the battecry of our founding founders & their  economy was based on a solid IMPORT TARRIFF that got other countries to pay our taxes while our labor/manufacturing consistently had work ...

since the tarriffs have all been lifted the past 50 years or so, look what has happened to US manufacturing & now, the entire US economy, as well as our safety...

its a shame the Dimorats were the America First party this go round...that used to be the platform of the Republicans...

America First is why Reagans tax cuts/voodoo economics & dealings w/ china & the world didn't bankrupt our country & why GWB's did ...

GWB forgot to include an america first clause while we had wide open borders, no tarriffs & borrowed trillions of dollars from foreign countries...

That buy American and tarrifs are also a huge part of what caused the Civil War.

and FREE TRADE also caused the USA revolutionary war in 1776 ...

by the time the civil war broke out, obviously the original intent & voluntary union had already gotten polarized because of corruption & greed...

everygood thing comes to end after a few generations...

FREE TRADE has worn is usefulness again & a giant rebound for tariffs & america first is ready to bust out ...

I'm not for protectionism either & I doubt we'll see the  extent of that kinda stuff like we saw in the late 1800's either...

people don't want monopolies these days, nor do they want King George III's free trade, nor do most want socialism...

just the basics like our founders did & that is AMERICA FIRST...

Who let crazy uncle jonnie out of the home again?

He knows as much about economics as he does everything else:  Zero.

and   losers  claiming to be experts on  'the economy'  have done exactly what to lead us in the right direction lately ??

wasn't you doofus president an MBA from harvard ??

lots of good that did eh ??

lots of good trashing the US manufacturing base for imports did  !!

import nations are  LOSERS so I'd imagine anyone continuing to toot the horn of NAFTA/massive imports to the US going untaxed  are also losers...

unless of course you consider liberal dems taking evreything over during a quasi depression is good economic & political policy??...cause thats where econmists like you have led us..
