Title: Old fly rod
Post by: Wineslob on January 03, 2013, 02:48:41 PM
I figure this'll get Catsems attention.    :-)

I "found" an old bamboo fly rod that I had forgotten about for probably over 10 years out in the garage. At one time I 'collected" them for aesthetic  reasons and possibly to make some money (collectibles). Many that I found and I really didn't know much about, were "junker" rods. Many from the post WW2 era and made in Japan. One though, I realized was a "decent" rod. It uses Nickle Silver ferrules and reel seat plus the action of the rod was/is much better than the junkers.

A few pics of what it looks like:

I used these photos to ID the rod on a forum and was pleased to find out what I have is a 1934 Heddon #13 Lucky Angler.

The finish on the rod is shot plus it looks like it was refinished many years ago, and not well. Whoever did it removed the original decals. The only way it was ID'd was from the reel seat and shape of the cork handle.

I'm going to do a total strip down and refinish. This is where I have a question for Catsemtrods.
I believe you make your own rods? Do you use the "dip" method for finishing your rods? From that point on I have no problem re wrapping the rod as Iv'e done several of those beloved "plastic" rods that I cherish so much.

I do have a dip tank. The Lucky Angler #13 from 1934 did have maroon wraps but were tipped in green. I would use Citristrip and 0000 steel wool very carefully try not to take down the edges of the seams. You need to be careful with stripper as the glue used in the day might delaminate! I use MOW spar varnish in my tank and wraps. I dip the blank once and then wrap. I finish the wraps with 2 coats of brushed varnish and then dip the finished rod again. Back in the day that was built it would not surprise me if they finished the rod with a turkey baster! Actually making rods is easier that refinishing! Good luck!

A few of mine.

Cats, ty and gorgeous fly rods!

I've never done the dipping process, so I'll have to look that up.

Your website is now bookmarked.

Love that little 7ft 4 wt.

Dip tank is a big investment and or project! Probably not for you. For years I finished blanks with Birchwood Casey gunstock finish and a lint free rag with great success. Its a bit of a learning experience to finish wraps with varnish but guys like you could cheat and use epoxy finish since your not trying to cheat anyone but yourself!

The restoration of antiques is a hobby of mine, too. If it's OLD, has WOOD, or is a GUN......

An M1869 .50/70 Cavalry carbine. Only 342 were ever made, and only for troop trials.

The top is an M1842 .69 calibre "Mississippi", and the lower is a .20 gauge Belgian "Zulu" shotgun.

The serial number indicates this M96 Mauser is from the last lot of an Italian 1900 contract.

Documentation indicates this Ansonio "kitchen clock" was manufactured in 1842. It's still running on an old table in our living room.

A steamer trunk, ca. 1860. I made an exception to my "restoration" rule. I lined it with tongue and groove closet liner cedar, and we use it as a cedar chest.

Nothing ever just "gets old".

Ya I saw that. I'll probably do what I did before with a bamboo rod, very, very carefully remove finish, tape off whats needs to be, and spray with a poly exterior varnish, re-wrap and Flex Cote the wraps. This rod is for me, so I'm not trying to be "perfect" and impress anyone.  I did one many years ago this way and the results were excellent.

Try the Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil. I think they even have it in a spray can now. Its indestructible! I coated a few old butt sections with it and am still using them for tomato stakes 10 years later!

Son of a bitch! I bet you can't get spar varnish either? Are there no cane rodmakers in commiefornia?

There's plenty of rod builders around here. You can get Spar Varnish (Man-O-War). Runs about $14 for an aerosol can. I decided on a Poly after reading how well it does. No fade/yellowing/flexible plus it's very tough. I fish (as you probably saw in my photos) very rocky areas where allot of climbing is involved. Rods get beat up.

That is a very pretty rod.  I'd love to have something like that to hang on my wall.

Speaking for myself, I like old things, too.  Old furniture, old books, old appliances, old houses, old cars, heck, old everything.

We need a 'show your old stuff thread' here somewhere.  I'd love to see what everybody else has, like marv posted.

Believe it or not, bamboo can take more of a beating than those plastic sticks!

I started on the rod this weekend. Used Citristrip to remove the old finish. It worked VERY well! The next day (Sunday) I sprayed the "blank" with Helmsman Spar Urethane (semi-gloss). So far, so good. I'll get some pics up.

Oh, it turns out that this is a "Heavy Bass/Trout rod" decided by the size of the ferrules. Some where around a 7-8 wt. I may actually take this rod up to Pyramid Lake (NV) this March and fish for the large Cutts there. Should be fun.

Picked up a nice little gem for the rod:

It's coming together:

Not so ratty looking now,

I should have the rest of the wraps done tonight.

Iv'e got the guides done and coated. The thread I used is supposed to be correct and is very thin compared to what I've used in the past. A PITA, but the rod came out OK.

Next I'll put on the decorative wraps and a hook keeper.

Cats, for the decorative wraps do you use a thinner thread than the A? I'm trying to figure out how the "old guys" were able to put such small color bands on the rods.
Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: catsmtrods on January 20, 2013, 10:18:34 AM
Yes the trick to thin trim bands is smaller thread and spit! If you wet the thread you can lock 3-4 turns. I use a scalpel to trim tag ends. Looking good!

Looking great!

I'm guessing it's a 9ft rod?  Nice reel, are you going to try a silk line?

I have a love for bamboo rods, been fishing them and collecting them for awhile.

Cats.. I like your penta. I have a Usian 7ft 5wt, same type of action?

Yup, 9 footer. I picked up a Heddon #14 Thoroughbred (probably from the 50's) in the same ferrule size (2 3/4) and same length for 30 bucks, with case and bag. It's in bad enough shape that I decided to see if the tip section is the same as the #13, it is. I'll re-do the tip and that'll give me two for the older rod.

No silk, I'm not a masochist.  :-)

I took the rod out the other night and cast a 6wt sinking line with it. Damn, what a beast.   :o

Both the 7' rods are base on the Cattanach Sir D 7042 7 Ft 4 Wt taper that we tweaked a little by swelling the butt. Everyone that ever cast them love them. They are delicate yet can toss a 5wt 85' if your a good caster. Honestly I never had a real Uslan in my hands. I have cast rods built on his tapers and felt they broke down with a lot of line out?

Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: Dblhaul on January 23, 2013, 09:02:52 PM
Wine, LOL..  the old 9ft rods tend to be quite heavy, yet can still throw alot of line. Silk is wonderfull to cast, and dosent take that much matainance.

Cats, I've cast a few rods based upon the sir D, not bad at all!  The Uslan flexes all the way to the grip when you load it. Fun on small waters but not very good for the bigger waters we have out here in the west.   Have you tried any quads?
Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: catsmtrods on January 24, 2013, 04:04:57 PM
Yeah the Uslan tapers I have cast were very slow. Our Sir D is hopped up so to speak! I have not built a quad but have cast many and love them! A lot of power! But for some reason they never win the casting competition we have every year at the gathering? Of course I never won that either!!

Well I got the reel last night. Gotta love English craftsmanship, well, with fly reels anyway. I put a WF 7 F line on it and did a few casts in the front yard. I'm gonna have a sore right arm when I fish with this thing.  :o

Next time you find a 9' 3 piece rod throw the butt section away and make a 6' banty rod. I have some nice little rods I made from South Bends and Shakespeare rods.

I was gonna mention banty rods, but figured you had gone thru all the work of restoring the whole thing it might be a insult!

Most trout rods of that era were 6wts, you might want to try one on it!

I have an old Bamboo fly rod (at least I think its old) with a real that was left in my fathers stuff when he passed (he mentioned it came from his father years before). It's in a bamboo case. I have no idea what its shape is in as I put it away and have not taken it out. The real looks like a side mounted Zebco 202 but much thinner (if that makes sense). It does not look like a typical open fly real.

If I post some pics could I get an idea about the combo? I'm curious about what it is. My father was known to tell a tale or 2 so it may have just been something he picked up at Walmart.

The other rod is the same ferrule size. Last night I found the butt section from a Sage LL 3/4 wt. I had built around 1990. The tip section is broken, and not repairable. I cut off the rod at the top of the handle. I then removed the ferrule and sanded the mid section of the bamboo rod (the one I just bought) to fit down inside the handle, it's a damn stiff rod,(calling Gina  :panic:) but it'll make for an interesting "Banty".

Post some pics of it! Especially if there are any name/numbers on it.

The reel is an "automatic", it's spring loaded so it will retrieve the line.

The Real is a Johnson model 40 Pat Pend. I looked it up and it shows as around $20 so it's nothing special.

The case is balsa wood. There is 1 base, 2 middle sections and 2 end pieces. Forgive my terminology if it is incorrect. The only writing is NFT near the handle (grip)

That is a spin cast reel I think not a fly reel. The rod an case are most likely Japanese. A lot of those were imported after WW2. The 2 mid sections are interesting? Not worth much me thinks.

My Grandfather was in Japan when the treaty was signed at the end of WWII. He was stationed there for about 5 years after so that may be where he got it. While it might not have a high monetary value it does have some sentimental value. I have a better idea of where it came from so that is nice. I wonder why he kept the rod and real together?

Thank you.

Thank you guys. I didn't care about the monetary value. I was wondering about its history. My grandfather was not exactly a talkative guy. So it's nice to know he kept something for years. I even found an old train I had. He took the locomotive apart, cleaned it, put it back together, mounted it and painted it like Casey's 009 Engine. It shows me he had a little sentiment in him.

Knowing he brought it back from Japan gives it value to me. He was a Marine Raider during WWII. The only time I ever got anything out of him was one time when I was on leave he mentioned Makin Island.

Dac,
The wood box is typical of post WWII Japanese rods. It was one of the industries started to get their country going after the war. To think it went from bamboo rods to electronics and cars (all of which the united states pionered).
The rod you have I would consider a wall hanger. Everytime you look at it it will bring your Grandfather back to mind!

I'm working on the Heddon #14, stripped, varnished, trying to figure out if I want to invest in an Agate stripper guide.......

One question, is there a way to determine the wt? I used the second and tip sections to make it into a 6 1/2 footer but it's really got some backbone to it. It ain't no Parabolic.......

I took the Heddon #13 out Saturday and fished the NFF (North Fork Feather River) Didn't get a single hit, but it was very interesting casting/fishing a bamboo rod for the first time. The timing was sure different.......

Hi Wine, I have a Heddon 14 in mint condition that I have fished a few times, a very slow rod. It the time they were sold they were marketed as a "lake" rod, what ever that means! As I understood it they were a good trolling fly rod that had very smooth action with a fish on.

Making a banty out of it will speed it up a bit, but I havent found too many bantys that dont respond to a 6wt line very well.

IE: Feather river, did you check water temps? Drys typ start coming off when it reaches 40-42d (H2O temp).  Justa a FYI, most trout waters have stonefly nymphs in them year round, at least out here in the west.

 :-)

I used a bead head #14 similar to this (my own design though):

and some stone flies (Golden). I could see a few fish taking a swipe at the flies, but no takes. The river is not known for dries, but huge populations of stone flies. At those time I use an AP Black Stone and knock the crap out of them. A Feldermaus will have the same effect. I've tried to fish this river many times in the past (28 years) during winter, but the damn fish are always sleeping. I think they just know that nothings going on. Usually it'll "wake up" around mid/late May or so.

After an hour of fishing the Heddon, I got the timing right so it became second nature to cast it. Yup, it's a "slow" rod, but does not require allot of effort for longer casts. Some of the pools were slightly out of range for my 4wt Sage, but with this rod, not a problem.

I have an eye on a 8 1/2' SB 323 "project rod" that's a "true" 5wt. I'll see if it's available next month. I think it would be a great rod to fish this river with.

Have you guys used the "Sylk" lines? I'm looking at the 444 Courtland. I don't want to re-do the rod with modern guides.

The Sylk lines I have had were all ok, tips will sink if you dont keep it cleaned and treated.

I got the Black/Orange Jasper thread. I may as well just do the whole rod. I had to tighten up the ferrules using a tubing flaring tool. Just the part that holds the tubing. Worked great!

Pic of the rod ends. The varnish is quite darkened.

Not this one.  It's the perfect rod for the rivers/creeks I fish here. HEH or E 8 1/2 footer. True 5 wt.    :hyper:

Now, I do know where I can get a 359 9 footer for 80 bucks, in really good condition.............

I built banty's out of a few 359's They're great! I sold one to a saltwater guide in Fla who keeps it on his boat rigged for snook! He loves it, lots of power!

Water temps hit 42 for awhile today. Western March Browns are beeing seen and the fish are taking them. Skwallas are almost done and the blue wings are just starting. Mild winter is going to make for some great spring fishing!

Donno if I'll get any more "grass sticks" but that SB surprised the hell out of me. Heck, it wasn't even loaded up right. I was using a WF4F but it'll easily throw it 25-30 feet farther than the Sage. Mending, accuracy, etc, etc, was MUCH better, and it never ran out of power. The Sage will "fall apart" if I try to double haul too much line. It's a perfect match for my absolute fav. river to fish.   :cheersmate:

The rod in question after a little "fixin"

Nearly all the wraps were "dry" and the mid section needed 2 guides replaced. With a little re-varnish, it came out nice.

Picking up a late 50's JW Young Beaudex 3 1/2". I gave up on trying to find a Pflueger 1495. Hell the Young is not much more than any of the Pfluegers I saw and is 3 X's the reel. Should be a great match for the SB. I'll do some pRon pics once I get it.   :-)

Those Youngs sure are purty:

I took the kidlet fishing. I picked her up a mid 60's Shakespeare fly rod (Wonder Rod) for $5 at the 'Will. It's not too bad, and is good for learning. She actually hooked up with 3-4 fish, but didn't get the "strike" right and lost them.

Her being "silly":

The river is looking good. This time last year, it was un-fishable.

Here she is being a trooper. She's a good kid. Bitched at first, but is getting the idea that sometimes, the trip is worth more than the fishing. She actually said she enjoyed dad dragging her into the canyon from hell.    :hyper:

Mid ferrule (female) on the SB came loose, dammit, plus one tip broke right at the ferrule.  :argh: I'll get it fixed up soon. The tip will only lose about 3/4" with the repair so it should be OK. With the weather coporating, it's gonna be awesome on the river this weekend, and I want the rod ready.

Cats, I'm having trouble getting the ferrule (female) on the butt section off. It's "loose" as in it will slide up slightly from fishing the rod, but I can't get it to budge so I can re-glue it.  Ideas????  :???:

I'm also thinking of going to a larger stripper guide. The line doesn't slide as freely as I'd like. Think going to a larger one will help??
Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: catsmtrods on June 06, 2013, 06:38:05 PM
Did you try some heat? Not to much! Steam from a tea kettle works ok sometimes. Careful with an alcohol torch if that don't.

The ferrule could be pinned. A lot of them were and finished to hide the pin so you have to look close. If so you will have to punch it out.

Is the stripper nickel or agate? Nickel you could maybe polish to help. Larger can't hurt.

Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: Wineslob on June 07, 2013, 03:40:29 PM
The stripper is nickle, and REALLY small, but I may have an agate from a #14 Heddon (the "banty" rod). I'll look. Not sure if it is pinned, I'll take a close look at that too.

Your looking for free guides?  I don't have any specs on Uslan's. Is it a pent? I have a bunch of English twist snakes I could let go for a conservative fee.
Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: Dblhaul on June 25, 2013, 10:26:14 PM
LOL. No, I don't want free guides. I expect to pay market value for them!

Yes it is a pent, I am interested in the snakes.

This rod needs to be fished. I dropped it off with a rod maker in Durrango a few years back. He had a heart attack while helping his neighbor with a stuck car in the snow. Another builder took over his work and after a year told me he didn't have time to rewrap it.
So, it's been sitting round here for some time and I think it's finally time to fish it!

I'm just not sure on the guide
sizes I need to get, any help would be appreciated. And if you have the guides, I would be happy to purchase them from you.

Thanks!

I happen to build a 7' penta 4wt that cast very nice. Everyone who picks it up is impressed. That said I never tried the English twist guides on them. They are chrome and seem a bit squat compared to the snake brand I generally use. I have used them on a few 6' banty's with good results. They are very rare if you look, H&H no longer makes them. I picked up a bunch in a big lot of stuff I bought at a gathering years ago. I could send you a set of 8 snakes in the size I have that I think would do well on that rod. For the stripper and tip top you would be on your own. If you like them pay me what you think and if you don't send em back. We are all friends here right?

PM me if you like.

UH OH Houston, I have a problem:

MOAR RODS!

A beat up Granger Special (barely visible in the pic), pre Wright and McGill. No guides on the butt section mid is meh and no tip. Reel seat has seen better days:

(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k179/Apogeespeaker/20130727_123954_zps7f3c7ad6.jpg) (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/Apogeespeaker/media/20130727_123954_zps7f3c7ad6.jpg.html)

Unknown rod, but might be a Monty. Very dark flamed cane. It might be worth fixing up, but the female ferrules are both cracked. Looks like an 8 1/2 foot rod. The ferrules are not pinned.

Nope, not Eprey. A local "Antique Mall".

Not sure what I want to do with the Granger, I'm thinking the cost of having a new tip sections made is cost prohibitive. I may sell, there are lots of rod restorers/collectors that may want good sections and what I have, other than missing parts, is in fair/good shape.

The second rod (dark) may be a Monty 'Highlander". not worth much, but since it's all "there". minus the ferules, it may turn into another project rod. I kinda like the dark cane.

I picked up another John Channer built rod last week. It had been made for a friend of mine in MO, then sold to another friend in CO and last week brought to Idaho so I could try it. It worked for me! It is a 7'-6" 3wt, 2/2. This is the third Channer I have added to my quiver. Reading the serial # this rod was made in 2003. I fished it with a 4wt silk line and it handled wind , rain and 18" westslope cuttys quite well!

I know bamboo can do funny things. Just seems odd.

"Cane" rods are funny like that. They don't get brittle, though you would think they would.

Right now I'm reading Michael Sinclair's book, "Goodwin Granger, The rod man from Denver" One of the interesting things about Granger rods, the dry air in Denver kept the bamboo from shrinking after a rod was constructed. They were completely dry. None of Goodwins rod ferrules were ever pinned, a common practice among other rod builders of the day. His were pressed on and the NS (nickle silver) formed to fit the bamboo. To this day it is very rare to have a Granger ferrule come loose. Another good thing is the resistance to "set" (bends or kinks in the rod from use) the Granger rods have.  That's one of the reasons I can buy a rod from the late 30's and just take it out and fish it. Mine has a slight set to one tip (give the poor thing a break, it's 75 years old!), but it does not affect it's performance.
That cannot be said of the South Bend, Montague and Heddon rods I have.

BTW, Cats, this rod (it's a 6 wt, I use a DT floating line) can go from tossing a wet/dry 10-15 ft for close shots with delicacy to being a "cannon" for long casts. Amazing. It shows that Goodwin loved his "tournament" tapers and brought that to his "regular" rods.

Thanks for the info.  I spent 37 years in Colo., and never took to fly fishing. I was more ultra-light spinning with 2 and 4 pound test.
I did try it. For some reason, I just couldn't master the technique. It takes some skill I'm not suited for.

Could be. They are quite "magical". Even the W&M era rods are very good. But they did maintain the tapers, except for the two piece rods that were designed by Phillipson.
I am surprised that you don't see many, they (Granger and then Wright & McGill) made scads of the the lower grade rods, Specials, Victory's, Stream & Lake...etc..

Personally I prefer the pre-war rods.

Yup! However the Stream and Lake that I need to re-do used nylon thread. W&M were the ones that went to nylon.  The only issue is if I don't re-wrap the entire rod, it's tough to match the color. The thread is out there, I'm just still looking.

I would have thought silk, so I'm a bit surprised.
By "re-wrap", are you speaking of strictly ferrules or additional parts of the rod?

Usually a strip-down, re varnish and new guides/wrappings. The ferrules (reel seats almost always come loose, so they get done) are un-possible to replace, so if they come loose, I re glue them.

Hummmm, looking at a pre-war Granger Premier...........next to the highest grade in the line up....but it's a "blue collar" IE: only has one tip that's 1 1/2" short, no bag, no tube, not a "collectible" rod.. Still.....

Skul, I have the week of and after Christmas off, I'm going to try and get the Granger Stream and Lake done. I'll post pics.

Owner won't budge off the asking, dammit.

If you do try for pix, use a light or medium gray background.
That might accent the rod color and detail a little better.

By missing part of the one tip, I presume it's the very end.
Maybe the seller will get tired of sitting on it after a few months, and come down to earth.

Donno, he's stuck on "the reel seat is worth XXX so I want 50 bucks too much for it"
Ya, if a tip section is "down' it means it was probably broken off and a new tip-top applied. I offered $100 for it, more than I've ever paid for any Granger. The others I got were either complete with original bag and tube or in good enough shape that I didn't mind shelling out $50 for them. This one is pretty rough, but it is a somewhat rare (production numbers) model. This is the second time it's been up for sale.

Went down to the river today to see what shape it was in. Anchor ice along the edges and low flows. I could tie on a GRHEN and fish for white fish or drive an hour this weekend to a spring creek with rising trout.

Rising trout it is!

I'll try to get pics up, I just ordered YLI #004 thread for the rod. I gave up on the "correct" nylon thread (Gudebrod 326/ not made any more) and went with a very close color match in a silk thread. I'll probably end up re-doing the entire rod. Considering both tips are "down" I might as well.

I got  the rod stripped down (used Citri-strip) and Spar-Varnished. The tips (to the right) I'll probably leave alone. They look good enough to just touch up. It'll be a couple of days before the varnish is dried enough to re-wrap the butt and mid sections.

Luckily I was able to preserve the script on the butt section of the rod. I was also able to match up the wrap color very well. In the middle pic, (bottom pic is, right to left, butt, mid, tips) the wrap that's just above the cork handle is original. The section just above it, the "mid" is completely re-done with new wraps and snake guides. The tips, at the very top of the pic were just left alone and had a coat of varnish put on. Top pic shows the upper portions of the rod where I had to re-wrap the stripper guide, ferrule, and mid ferrule/guides. It also shows where the tips are "down" (short) about 2" from breakage. It's doubtful that that will effect the fish-ability of the rod. Can't wait to fish it!

I have been working on a strange old rod I cannot identify. It has a weird Bakelite twist lock reel seat with nickel hardware and nice nickel ferrules (the reason I choose it for restoration) I has very dark cane that was delaminated so I had to reglue it. I'll get photos up when I get time, maybe you can identify it.

Maybe not quite so close, better focus. The reel seat, that's a sliding band? Down locking? Any hall/alignment marks on the ferrules, and are they pinned? Any intermediates left?

Cats, got you an answer:

Quote
You have an early Montague Manitou from the late 1920's to early 30's. This Landman style twist locking reel seat was used on the first generation of Manitous, along with those Landman style hand welted ferrules. These welts tend to look like a rolled welt, but they are actually a half moon shaped piece soldered on. These often had an ornately knurled butt cap to match the sliding band. Though the reel seats changed over the years, the typical Manitou sported those Landman style ferrules throughout their production history.

Most of these early Manitous were heat treated, which gave them a rich, dark look to the cane.

The 8 1/2 footer is somewhat rare. Nice find!

Now you got me working. I got the butt section wrapped and thread coated with my secret special concoction. Not sure if I want to dip or brush coat the wraps yet. I am no good at matching colors as I despise using color preserver. I feel it weakens the build. That thread started out tan and purple silk! Now it is what it is and it wont fall apart when fishing as it may if I used preserver.

What is the major determining factor for line weight?
Does weather or other conditions influence the choice?

It's the "action" of the rod. Usually determined by the diameter of the sections and "taper" of the same, but not length. Many bamboo rods are specified in weights. The rod in the pics above (mine) is a 4.2 oz. rod. That's how the old Grangers and Wright and Mcgill's (and many others) were sized. So mine is a W&M Stream and Lake 8642. the 86 being 8 feet six inches and weighing 4.2 oz. That corresponded to a line weight of HEH (the old designation) or in today's system a 5 weight. The H's showing that the rod was designed for a Double Taper line and the weight being "E".

The funny thing with Grangers and W&M's is there was no line size specified, just the the oz. of the rods. Also all Grangers and W&M (same thing) were the same tapers. So all 8642 or say 9050 (the Victory I posted about) rods were the same. The only difference being the "quality" of the bamboo, number of decorative wraps (intermediates) and the number of guides (more for the better ones) witch was the model/grade name. The rod I pictured was the lowest "quality" on the model/grade scale, but still had the same taper/action as the most expensive model within that specific length. Yes it does lead to some confusion as compared to other makers during those times.

I am now waiting for a 8 1/2 foot H-I Chancellor ( I also picked up a Black River that needs very little work). Picked it up for $40, needs resto, but it was Horrocks-Ibbotson's near top-of-the-line rod so worth fixing up. I might keep it around for my daughter.
Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: Wineslob on June 09, 2014, 03:39:18 PM
Got the Chancellor here. Nice rod, and it's not one of the steel cored rods. H-I made some of there rods with a thin steel core and many complained that they were too stiff, no action.

This is not one of those:

(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k179/Apogeespeaker/IMG_0034_zps1a0f3117.jpg) (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/Apogeespeaker/media/IMG_0034_zps1a0f3117.jpg.html)

As can be seen the varnish is waaaaay too heavy. Looks like someone with good wrapping skills did a "resto" on the rod, but got over-zealous with the varnish. It's so thick the shine makes it look like some is missing in the photo's. It's not. The wraps are supposed to be and antique gold, so I'll have to fix that.

(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k179/Apogeespeaker/IMG_0033_zps115266c1.jpg) (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/Apogeespeaker/media/IMG_0033_zps115266c1.jpg.html)
Interestingly enough, these rods were "impregnated" with a resin. If you are familiar with Orvis it's the same technique. The idea being no varnish required. It's one of the reasons Orvis bamboo rods still look good and fish well 50 years (and more) later.
Many think the reason H-I did varnish impregnated rods was not wanting to "rock the boat" with customers who expected that from them.

(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k179/Apogeespeaker/IMG_0032_zpsef100483.jpg) (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/Apogeespeaker/media/IMG_0032_zpsef100483.jpg.html)

I believe that this rod, in the early 50's, retailed for $40, allot for those days, but it was one of the top models quality-wise. It'll be a good substitute for my Granger, which has more vale.

I picked up the Granger and what, from all the evidence, looks to be a late 20's early 30's Montague.

The Granger has full varnish "melt down" but all the wraps are intact, all sections are full length. I've been able to remove the varnish, and preserve the wraps. It should spruce up very nicely.

The Monty, will take a full strip down. There's tons of intermediates and the color of the thread isn't easy to ascertain.  Looks like red and maybe green. Hard to tell.

At this rate I'll have to pick up Sinclair's "Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook"............. :panic:

Pretty much what I found. Not sure when most of the big makers quit using them, hence my guess at the year.

It came with a neat old form case. All the sections are full length, fairly rare for it's age, same with the Granger.

OK,  I ran across this post which caused me to look at what was in the rafters of the garage.  Years ago I brought a couple rods, reel, net, and, creel from my mothers after she passed.  They had been my dads and probably date to the 1920 era.  They look like bamboo, three piece and look to be about nine feet when put together.  One has the place for the reel at the back of the handle and is the lighter of the two, the other has the place for the reel in the middle handle.  The reel says Laurentian No. 2,  Dry Fly Reel,  Lawson Machine Works, Montreal Canada.

I will try and take a few pictures but we have a t-storm moving in at the moment.    Any ideas?  The smaller one was in a very old cotton sleeve.  The other one has a bit of the tip missing.  Both are missing eyelets which may or may not be in the rafters....They been there 21 years.

Here comes the thunder ... there go the dogs!

Take good, clear, close ups. Show the whole reel seat, handle and the winding check (where the rod meets the cork) from different angles so details can be seen. Same with shots of the ferrules. Any stampings?

Sounds like one of them is a casting rod.

The reel is a good, solid, one but very simple. Known to be loud (clicker)

Oh, this is for Cats. The tip of the Granger, from slightly below the tip-top to a little above the first guide is missing one strip of bamboo. Looks like damage from a hook ding. However, the tip seems fine, with gentle flexing. Suggestions? Invisible wrap? Or????

Yes,  it is when you switch it to drag.  Otherwise it is very quite.  The switcher is a bit stiff to operate so I quit playing with it for now.  Damn we are getting a good soaking.  And the beagle soaked the bathroom rug.   :argh:  Oh well that is the price you pay for having animals.  Got to go clean it up.

Let's see how I did:
Larger middle rod is first.  I figured out pretty quick that the pool table cover was not good contrast.

Both rods look like Montague/Chubb, probably from the mid 20's to early 30's. The "tells' are the non serrated ferrules, reel seats, sheet cork handles and winding check.

The bigger rod is a boat rod, most likely.

The other is, of course, a plain old fly rod. Hard to tell on the fly rod what model, but the particular kind of seat can be ID'd and dated.

The "fly rod' has a very light tip. I was amazed when I looked at it again after all these years.  But, I think it may be missing a metal piece which holds it together.  I will have to look in the overhead someday when the 'Cuda is outside and it is a bit cooler in there to see what else may be there.

Any idea if this was some kind of kit or something bought piecemeal?  Also what are reutilization recommendations.  I have a large plate full of projects and a very small spoon so it is not something I am going to get too excited about doing.
Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: Wineslob on August 06, 2014, 05:36:23 PM
Nope, not bought bought piecemeal. The ferrules are the "improved" units sans a serrated bottom. The reel seat is Monty/Chubb, the color scheme looks like red/black w/lots of intermediates. The winding check is correct. All this points to Monty/Chubb at the time when Montague bought Chubb and incorporated parts on the rods. It would be a good candidate for resto, and may fish quite well.

You can measure the ferrules with a drill bit(s). Whatever size fits into a female section (butt/mid) will help determine the weight of the rod. It should be in 64's" or converted to.  A 6 wt rod 8.5 feet long might be say, 18/64 butt section and the mid 12/64's. If smaller, lighter weight rod, but it depends on how much smaller.

I'll post good pics of the one I picked up, they are VERY similar.

What length is the rod or just measure one of the sections that looks full length. I'll guess at 8.5 feet (34.5" sections)

Similarities:

Same winding check:

Different reel seat, I think yours is an actual Montague not a mix of the two companies. There may be, but not always, an "M" on the seat or it might be stamped Montague.

The fly rod does indeed say Montague on the reel holder. I got a moment to look in the overhead and did not find the missing lug nor other parts.  The boat rod didn't have any markings I could see.

I doubt the boat rod is worth restoring. The Monty is probably not either, I think I have a few of those?  Maybe the tips and mids for 6' small stream rod.

The one I showed pics of I picked up for $40. Just for "shits and giggles" I'll restore it, or, in other words, make it fishable. It doesn't have any major damage or missing parts so I'll use it for practice.

I decided to make the rod a wall hanger. It looks good on the wall.  I'll probably be sending out the tip section (Granger)to a maker I know, he'll scarf the tip for $50 and make a complete"matching" tip section for a bit more.

I would love to see a Catskill Mountain fly Rod catch a big catfish...

I once heard a story (which I love and therefore hope is true) that a recovery diver working the Kenlake dam felt a presence that formed on the edge of the murky water of the mouth of a channel cat big enough to swallow him.

I'm not sure what the Taylor is based upon. It throws a nice look with a med action and plays a fish with ease. I also have a Kusse 7.5ft 5wt quad with one more guide on it..  it handles a tiny bit better, but the Taylor is the one that gets fished.

Sorry Cats, but I got the rod this week, it's pretty nice. Ya, Chinese labor is a good thing........ I know it would be nice to support USA makers, but I can't afford it. Even at "blank" prices it would be 3X's what this rod cost me.  :(

What I want the rod for:

West Branch of the Feather River. It's perfect for a 3 wt rod.

Picked this up at a local pawn shop. It's a 1926 (from the ser. # E 1511) Hardy sold by the B H Dyas Co.  in L.A. They went out of business in the 30's I believe.

7' 4" 3/2 sliding band cork grip/seat in pretty good shape. Should be a 3-4 wt. The rod is quite small, should be fun on a small stream.

Picked up a South Bend 290 7 1/2' 6 wt. and a "Challenger" 9 ft. 6 wt.  The Challenger is a "trade rod" made by Wright & McGill  who also made Granger rods. It's the same as a Granger 9050, but made from lesser cosmetic quality bamboo than the Granger rods. It was a way for them (W&M) to sell rods made from bamboo clums that would have been destroyed normally, and not use the Granger name.

Here's the Challenger rod, bottom, and probably from the early 50's, next to a Granger (top) from the mid 1930's:

Even after 20 years + the similarities are obvious.

The top rod is a shorter rod and has a slightly different cork handle, but still what's called a Reverse Wells.

I just picked up a Channer  7' 4wt 2pc 2 tip. Same taper as the 7'-6" rod I have from the same maker. It will get fished a lot.

I'm finishing up the Challenger rod, can't wait to use it on the North Fork of the Feather River. It feels like a 5-6 wt. Lighter than my Granger 9050  but a tad heavier than the 8642. Should be interesting to see once I finish wrapping and polishing it up.

While on a trip last month to Washington State the wife and I went to a couple of Antique shops. In one I found this rod:

(https://i.imgur.com/ZI0gOlp.jpg)  (srry about the out of focus)

It's a 1930's Edwards "Bristol" F5 . All sections are full length. Casts a 5 wt. line beautifully. The F stands for "fly" and the 5 was the cost in dollars.... in the 30's!  I'm at the point where I'll start rubbing out the varnish, and it'll be ready to fish.

Same here. I've been looking for ANY Edwards rods out here, (West Coast) for years. This is the first one . Then I get home from the vacation and find an Edwards F 18, but it's in pretty bad shape. Passed on it.

Great find! The Edwards rods are not too common in the NW.

I got out on the St Joe for a few days, hot weather and river temps left the fishing to early mornings. Did quite well considering the conditions!

My fishing has slowed the last couple years. I bought acreage that needs a bit of work. I keep telling my wife that I have to retire early to get the chores done around here so I can go fishing all the time when I turn 65. That said, I still do my week long trip to a couple rivers in north Idaho that have beautiful west slope cuttys. I've been fishing these two rivers during the same week for the past 20 years. Taking a nephew that is new to fly fishing this year, will be a great time! I'll wait a few years before I introduce him to bamboo rods.  :whistling:

Newest acquisition:

Late 30's to mid 40's Edwards F18 "Bristol" 8 1/2'.  BTW  the 18 refers to the price. These rods were the top of the line until you got into a "Edwards" marked rod. Think Quadrate.

Its in "good" condition and wont take much to restore.

Got it and finished it out, but only one tip done. When I get time I'll do the other. The rod is very fast, and roll casts like crazy. Took it out this past 4th to a small creek and have to say it's one of the best short rods Iv'e owned. It only comes in second to a Granger 7030 I got a couple months ago.

Found a pretty neat rod. It's a FE Thomas from the late 1800's to no more than 1909 (determined from the butt cap). Model is a Dirigo, 8.5 ft. 3/2. Only needs a small bit of resto. and it should be good to fish. It came with the original bag and the tip tube. At that time they didn't sell rod with tubes. It also does not have a stripper guide, just small English style guides.
It seems to like a 6 wt. line.

Well, I've picked up a fairly rare rod. It's a Max Yerxa 8 foot 2/2 that's an incredible 5 wt. Max was a student of EC Powell and actually developed the A B and C tapers that Powell used on his rods.
It's most likely from his last years of production, the finish isn't quite as good as it should be as his eyesight was getting bad. This would be from the mid 90's.

Fished it on the NFF this past Friday. The rod is one of the best I've ever cast. Easily out-casting the Granger 8.5 footers I have.

Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: Wineslob on October 31, 2019, 01:06:31 PM
The reel is a very "Blue Collar" Berkeley 510. I picked it up for something like 5 bucks, but it looks like a more expensive reel.

Correction on the Yerxa reference, it was Max's uncle Wood that worked with EC Powell and developed the A and B tapers. Max was a life long friend of EC's.

Thought I'd add that I'm restoring the FE Thomas rod. It turns out that it was "restored" in the past incorrectly with Black/Jasper thread and Black nylon (didn't exist at the time this was built) at the Ferrules. The closest example I could find was a 1920 8.5 ft. Dirigo with mostly original wraps. The rod should have been dark red with intermediates all done in the same color. So I've started on getting it right.

So far only the Butt section is done:

Picked up three, yes three, more rods. All are Montague FishKill  8.5 footers.  Two are in VG shape, one is a parts rod. These were Montague's entry level rod in the highest grade they offered. Where they saved money was skimping on the number of guides. They feel like 5 wts.

Thought I'd add a couple of rods I picked up. With us moving to Idaho, especially in winter, I'll need a few projects.

A mid-40's Granger 8642. It needs a bit of work, someone added a couple of extra guides to the mid section. The way you can tell the approx. year is the tipping on the guide wraps, the double black thin wraps. These ceased to be used in the late forties as another cost saving.
Bottom image is "original" tip on top modified on the bottom.

The other is a Montague Sunbeam. It's pretty beat up, but the cane is solid and I didn't pay alot for it.

Here's the # 17 Black Beauty. The in-line script vs spiral plus the orange tipping dates it to 1949. After '49 Heddon no longer used the orange tipping on the # 17, and went away from the spiral script. The black paint on the ferrules is in VG shape for it's age.

No the # 17 was very popular, but only about mid-way as far as the line was concerned. I believe that the #35 (or possibly the #20 Bill Stanley's Favorite?) and up were the high grade rods made in a "custom" shop.

Thought I'd add a couple of pictures of the restoration as it progresses on the Black Beauty.
Looking at the RH Side of the the picture two posts up, I've got the tip section on the RH side done. New matching guides and varnish and I saved the Japanned (black finish) on the ferrule. I was not able to get some staining out of the bamboo, but the wraps covered most of it.

Picked up a high grade rod. It's a late 1940's Phillipson Pacemaker 9' 3/1 with  the original bag and tube. The tip is short (broken in the past), but it should still be a nice 6wt. to fish. I started restoring the butt section first. The wraps are what they would have looked like when new. Its Granger Green or Parakeet depending on thread maker.

Little NF has a lot of meth heads in the campgrounds, I avoid it during the summer. Above Prichard on the main stem NF is great, just about any pull off will have a trail to the river with a good run or pool and fish. Tee Pee Creek has good fishing also. Prichard Tavern makes a great burger.

Ya it looked great (NF). Water was too high/cold. Fish were hanging in back eddies I couldn't get to. Haven't heard about the "issue" with the Little NF, but I'll still go this summer.

As dry as it has been in the lower lands, the mountains  got a good snow pack. River should be fishable mid to late June.
Keep in mind the Pack river and the Moyie. And a few miles more the Koot is always worth  checking out.

Had a great four days camping on the NF. Stayed at MP38, surprisingly it was not crowded.
Fished up and down stream from there. Lots of fish looking up.
Wrap up some Wulff style flies in 14 and 16, I like a bleached elk hair wing and tail for visibility.

Hit the LNFCDA yesterday. Water level was low as to be expected but the temps were much better for the fish. Caught a nice "beast" of a Cutty on a Montague Fishkill.

Here is the Fishkill. The restored sections (blue tape is for varnish) are to the left of an original that I fish. Tip section (on the right) has 3 more guides than what the rods came with, which help them cast better. The guide spacing differences are, from what I can tell, from different manufacturing years.

Do you keep the original guides or go with newer ones to cast plastic lines? Or, do you fish silk lines?
Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: Wineslob on February 26, 2022, 11:25:44 AM
I use the original ones when possible, and I haven't noticed where plastic lines have any difficulty.
Never have used silk.
Title: Re: Old fly rod
Post by: Dblhaul on February 27, 2022, 09:29:17 PM
Nice. I have never upsized for plastic lines, have heard of some who do.
I have a few silk lines, they cast great because of the smaller diameter but need to be dried out after a good morning of fishing.
Also have some Cortland "Sylk" lines, they are fine for closer in fishing but lack the back bone for longer casts.
I'll be checking the NFCDL in a week or so, trying for some winter fish before the melt starts.

Got a couple more rods. Both are Montague Rapidians  7.5 ft. Ill get both up, fun to see how they completely changed the look of the rod over the years.

Early rod with gold wraps and cedar insert reel seat. I did a sand and overcoat of varnish keeping it as original as possible.

If you have the time take the road to the end at Red Ives. It's a one lane road with pullouts for the last 14  or so miles.

Pic is fuzzy but it's a Heddon Expert 9.5 ft Salmon rod, what they called a 3F ferrule size and made for Sears.
It's from a former co-worker who wanted it " fixed up a bit". It belonged to his grandfather who passed in the mid 60's. All I did was redo the stripping guide and an over varnish.
His grandfather had applied varnish at sometime but not very well.

Right now he is cleaning up his property in Florida. House made it, because its cinder block and raised up.

I'll be on the NF next week camping at MP 38. Hidden in the trees.

It was nice, but not the greatest water I've ever fished. I went to Lightning Creek last Fri. near Clark Fork. Very nice, good fish and if you want to keep a few, you can. Also the dispersed camping areas are nowhere as "beat" as the Little N. Fork CDL.

I fished it with a 7.5 ' Montague Rapidan. Nice rod.

Correction, no you can't  it's part of the Clark Fork drainage.

Fished Lightning Creek today. Long drive from Freeman.  Went up 12 miles or so, caught small fish. Worked my way down too the fire area, watched the helicopter drop water every 9 min on a fire that was not putting out smoke.
All in all, a good day! I fished a Channer boo, cant beat that!

12 miles or so (just past Porcupine Lake acess) is about where I fished. Really nice camping area in that vicinity.

Hit the Joe yesterday. Went up to Conrad CG and worked my way downstream to Avery.
Fished a 7'-6" 4wt Channer with a 5wt line. All drys, all day.
Caught fish everywhere we stopped.
Long day!

Hit the NFCDA today. Water is very low. Fished a Moonshine rod, non boo!
The fish are still there, just have to find them.
I did hike upstream in a few places, saw some water I would not have been able to get to with higher flows.

Nice! Ya the fish hang in deeper pools and get pretty skittish. Lots of hoppers here in town so that should bring them out.

On the NF again today. Catching was good with a bleached hair wing dry. Lots of people out there for a week day, looking forward to September and folks stop camping.

On the St Joe today. Fish were looking up. Had a banner day with drys. Fished a 7'-6" 5wt quad that really makes it easy to lay out a good amount of line.
Taking the camper down to the Locsha next week for 4 days of fishing there.

I got back from a trip to Ca. to see my mother. Hit up a lake I
haven't been to for nearly 3 years. Known for large trout, I got a 6 lb rainbow. :hyper:

6lb is a big rainbow! Sounds like it was a very good trip.

I'm just back from 4 days camping on the NFCDA. Good time and not too many other anglers there on weekdays.
Caught quite a few fish and saw my first black bear cub up there (between Kit Price and Devils Elbow campgrounds).

Fished a Channer 7'-6" 4wt and a Bill Taylor 7'-6" 5wt quad.

Heading out early in the AM for the Selway. Three days of fishing there, staying in a old motel. Come home for an evening then head back down with the trailer to stay at a FS campground for 1.5 weeks (on the same river). Have I mentioned that it's my favorite time of year?

Sounds very interesting. I am going on SS in Nov. and I'm still not sure if I'll keep working, even at reduced hours.

I went on SS 15 months ago, Medicare this month.
Best thing I ever did (besides quitting work for 30 months to become a trout bum 18 years ago) you'll enjoy the time to get stuff done, and it doesn't have to be done today.

Spent time on the St Joe last week. Caught some of the biggest fish I have ever seen there. Good times!
Headed to the upper NFCDA Thursday, going to fish my Taylor 7'-6" quad. Should be good!

Hit the NF and the Joe this past week, finishing it out for the year.
Took a time out to try a new rifle, always good times on the river.

Time to tie flys now!
