Americans Blow $3.4 Billion On Valentine's Dinner

Valentine's Day may be just around the corner, but more Americans are single than ever before, with 39 percent (4 in 10) actually saying marriage has become obsolete, according to a new inforgraphic by Pew Research.

Not that it's stopping us from blowing millions on our friends and family.

Last year, couples spent $1.7 billion on flowers, $3.4 billion on dining out and $3.5 billion on jewelry. Men spent about $160 on their valentine, while women spent nearly $75 on theirs.

3. Valentine's Day, just another commercial holiday...

I found it interesting how many DUers defended the whole Christmas shopathon, Black Friday, etc., madness because "our economy depends on it".

Make presents, do favors, do nice things, quit buying crap, I say!

5. Well, considering this year's heart campaign

13. I think people should spend their own money on anything they want.

If they can afford to spend a few hundred dollars on a dinner, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't.

If they can afford that, then aren't their taxes too low?

12. OMG, I know! A couple folks go out and maybe have a good time.

Some good food, some conversation...who knows. Holy shit, that sucks! Why people just don't succumb to the misery surrounding them is SO beyond me.

24. The perfect time to make our point about contraception

one of the three nights a year that a conservative might actually get laid

I think there was a study recently that showed that conservatives have more satisfying sex lives than libs do.
Wonder why that would be, it can't possibly be that sex in a committed loving relationship could be better, could it?

30. We have DUzys. Can we get a Sourpuss Award, too?

An exchange entered upon willingly is, by definition, not "blown" money.

Well Dreamer anything good, wholesome, happy, or joyous is looked down at by the inmates of the DUmp.
They are miserable, so therefore anyone who isn't must be brought down to their level.

49. Leave it to DU to have an epic flame war over Valentine's Day dinners...

So true.

We actually stopped going out to dinner a few years ago, the prices were inflated and the menu was limited so we said screw it.

My idea about that is, who says Valentine's Day has to be on February 14?

Why not celebrate it some other day, such as August 10 or March 6, when the prices for dinner and roses are cheaper?

I don't care for long waits and crowds so I tend to prefer this myself. YOu can have just as nice an evening a week later or earlier(hell, I know many couples who have a 'date night' at least once a month if not more often to have time to themselves to reconnect like the courtship days) and unlike the dummies misconceptions, dinner and such are not required for a romantic interlude. I'm not a whore who needs some kind of monetary stipend or trinket to be with the man in my life. I'm conservative and I tend to believe such things are a healthy part of a committed relationship and should be had regularly. Sounds like a whole lot of projection going on at the dump.

Yep! we go to the movies and do dinner every so often and at least we get to order what we want, what is it with a limited menu? we'd get so mad. I'm a pretty cheap date though LOL, not into jewelry that much and I'm not into flowers.

The primitives' got it all confused.  The Valentine's Dinner is first.  The "blow" part comes later (no pun intended).

We always have a nice dinner at home.  The wait at a restaurant just isn't worth it.  I also make a homemade dessert.  If we spend money on Valentine's Day, it might be for some Ghirardelli chocolates.

Thoughtful AND socially conscious.

Snuggs--don't give Scoobie any ideas...I've already got her convinced all we can afford is a can of Chunky Soup and a daisy.

Are they going to create a thread that has a point already?  Sheesh.  Babbling on and on about nonsense.  Should republicans marry?  Should you go out to dinner for Val day?   ::)
