OK Earl G, help me understand this

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by In_The_Wind (a host of the General Discussion forum).
I don't understand why the nearly 800-response DU news/grave dancing thread is A-OK, but you've locked Flying Squirrel's poll as OT, especially in light of the fact that management (by which I mean Skinner and you) have indicated time and time again in DU 3 that this is supposed to basically be a self-governing community. NYC_SKP's comment was hidden by a jury. The system seems to have worked. But now you decide that isn't sufficient, and drop a ban on a poster who had one jury hide in over 3,000 posts. Yes, it was a vile comment, but as others have pointed out -- worse comments have been made by many posters in many contexts. Why this comment? Why now? Is the community enforcing the standards, or are you? If the answer is something along the lines of "the community, but management is the final arbiter" then I'd like to suggest clearer, more consistent application of the standards on your part, and I'd like to recommend that you and Skinner look long and hard at the toxic atmosphere that has developed. "It's the primaries" explains some of it, but not all of it -- there is an undercurrent of nastiness and incivility that has spread like a cancer in this place.

Now I know two things:

1) This is sure to be locked
2) I'm not the only person asking this

So perhaps you might come IBTL and answer the question for all to see.

My two cents re: the banning of Skippy.

Skippy was a happy go lucky, winsome lad who had the political hots for some Socialist Sanders. Conversely, he was a vocal downer on the subject of the Hildebeast. The 'cunning stunt' remark struck hard and deep into the political heart of Mrs. Skinner (whose wife really brings home the bacon!). Being bought and paid for by the Hildebeast, possibly in more ways than one, Mrs. Skinner had to act, and act big to stop the rebellion seething just below the surface at the DUmp. Nothing short of what he, or his minions, did to Skippy would have set the example he wants set in their discussions. Skippy had to die, the DUmmies can praise Red Bernie, but digs on the Hildebeast, clever of not so clever, will not be tolerated by the Troika.

Hopefully, some others will attempt to slide in some cracks about Hildebeast and get the granite pizza before the Dump Rats learn the true lesson Mrs. Skinner is dishing..

I'm a little out of sorts now, because Skippy had been one of my major projects for 2015, and now that he's crashed, well, so much for that.

There was no point in what he did; Skippy knew as well as the rest of us do, that there's not a dime's worth of difference between any of the Democrat candidates for president, and he could've just as well supported the Inevitable One as much as that crazy old sputtering indignant guy.

I wonder if Skippy's been reading that really long thread on Skins's island, to see what primitives who used to allege they liked him, have to say about him now.  I can't believe how blatant they are about it, bad-mouthing him when once they used to worship him.

If the primitives are going to be like that, abandoning a pal when he's down and out, who needs enemies?
