Family That Shoots Together Stays Together/ABC Did Story About 5 Year Olds Shooting Assault Rifles

I am beginning to think that we are nuts there was a story on CBS news about families teaching young children as young as 5 to shoot guns. They are even teaching them to shoot AR15"s on automatic.

They claim that children will be safer if they are taught to shoot guns when they are toddlers. They also claim these young children will know to leave guns alone if they are taught to shoot guns. They believe that they can create gun safe children if they know how to handle guns.

I think we are losing our minds.

New campfire, just lit; I'll watch for further developments.

2. Five is WAY too young for children to be handling firearms.

I don't think I ever handled my first real firearm until I was in Webelos (Think I was 10 or 11) and always under strict adult supervision. I was allowed to handle air powered BB guns and pellet guns under my Dad's supervision when I was a couple years younger, but that was it.

4. Shooting a firearm is skill, like anything else.

It's what's being taught away from the range that makes that skill potentially dangerous. With that stated, five years old seems too young to truly understand the full spectrum of responsibility.

Then again, there's a five year-old who is a pilot:

I think we are losing our minds.

DUmmie logic 1: Anyone who thinks that teaching children firearm safety and the proper use of firearms will create gun safe children has lost their mind!

DUmmie logic 2: Passing out free birth control to children and teaching them that it's perfectly normal and natural to hump anything that moves will result in safe sex and less pregnancies.

5. There is a You Tube out there

of grown men firing Big Ugly Guns for the first time and getting knocked on their asses by the recoil. I shudder to think what it would do to a five year old's little body.

Five is the age for supervised plinking at cans with an air rifle, not Big Ugly Guns that kick like mules.

^^^but on record as not being concerned about what drugs do to a pre-born infant's little body.

My dad was the oldest of 8 boys that grew up with guns.  They all knew how to hunt and how to use them practically from the time they could walk.  What is interesting about them all, was not one of them grew up to be a gun aficionado or hunter.   Nor were there any gun accidents.

Taught my kids to shoot around that age. Got the guns out whenever they asked to see them. Taught them there was no mystery to firearms.

I had/have loaded firearms all over my home and my kids never touched them unless we were around. They knew how to check a multitude of firearms to make sure they were safe to handle and now, they're grown, responsible, adults. Imagine that.

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.
