You have to perform a "hard reset" or a "factory reset" on the device - which varies device to device.

Most it's some combination of the power button and the reset button (as I'm sure you've noticed the soft reset performed by just pushing the reset button doesn't do it).

The brand and model would help.

Its big and black and we have a phone through it too. So thats a bit complicated. I can't see a logo or name on it anywhere. It came from Time SWarner and we don't remember the WEP 'password' because we want to hook a PS3 to the wireless internet

There should be a reset button on it somewhere.  Loading the factory defaults should remove the WEP key.  Of course, you'll have to set up the entire router again.  You may want to print out a configuration sheet for it.  The router should also have a default IP address you can paste to your browser.  Any half-decent router will have user menus for changing WEP keys and IP addresses.

You might have to call your ISP if they provided it for you... they would be able to give you the IP address.  I think mine is like 165.100.10.1 or something like that.

Assuming you can get a connection to the router - you may need to connect via a cable or perform a factory reset to get around existing security on the wireless side :

Should be able to get the local IP address of the router by opening a command prompt and typing "route print" ; The gateway ip  for the ip block 0.0.0.0 should be the offending device.

Generally they're configured at the start of the A,B or C IP blocks. (10.x.y.z ; 172.16-32.a.b ; 192.168.c.d)

Log in by opening http://[ip address of gateway] in a web browser.

You should also be able to access the Uverse router using 192.168.1.254

Linksys routers= 192.168.1.1

Dlink Routers= 192.168.0.1

Once you gain access, it will probably ask for a password

admin for the login

sometimes nothing for the password

sometimes "password" is the password

sometimes "admin" is the password.

Unless you've set one up different than the factory defaults.
