I am not sure, but I think it is worth a try.

What would you suggest they include in their message?

And remember, the post is about getting my students to write to OUR PRESIDENT

not about how poorly I post on an internet chat board

29. Why isn't proper grammar, punctuation and syntax automatic whenever one writes?
I'm not talking about typos like the occasional "your" for "you're" but the more serious language deficiencies that are excused by 'I'm on a message board.' Writing is writing; if one wishes to be understood and taken seriously, one should do it properly, if not well.

Apparently she didn't like the mods moving it, so she reposted it again about an hour later back in general discussion. Along with the extra special touch of mentioning her minority and illegal aliens students.

I am teaching a unit on the 3 branches of Government
This is an 8th grade class so we do not get very deep into any area, just the basics.

Things like:

What is the job for each branch
Who is in each branch

Qualifications of office

things like that.

We talked about Secret Service and other things.

My students want to write a letter to President Obama and invite him to our school.

I think it is a great idea 139 students would be writing.

Any suggestions on ideas? Remember, these are 8th graders...predominately minority and many not even legal.

Please if you don't like my grammar or punctuation or anything like that, keep it to yourself. This is a thought not a letter to congress.

Here's a suggestion for ya, greenbriar: quit.  Just quit.  Do yourself, your family, the children in your school, and by extension humanity a huge favor, and just quit.  Focus on your own issues, like enabling your husband's drinking buddy to leech off you.  Do you think for one second this guy is gonna be gone in January?

78. My point was rather clear

Poor language skills cannot be excused by the medium used to display them. It is much the same as a student turning in similar work and saying that proper grammar, syntax, usage and punctuation do not matter because it is only a public school.

It goes on for a while after that.  :rotf:

Oops.  I really should look at the pinned threads now and then.

When it comes to proper grammar and spelling, either you do or you don't, just like you say.  A teacher should be living and breathing proper grammar and spelling like it should be second nature.

Huge difference. When you proofread, you can recognize errors, and you know how to correct them. Greenbriar can do neither.
