Title: So...my brother just bought a diesel truck.
Post by: EagleKeeper on March 13, 2013, 07:45:29 PM
It's a late 90's (maybe a 96ish) 7.0 liter direct injection turbo diesel powerstroke. No intercooler but it does have  a transmission cooler.

3 speed with overdrive(I don't like this transmission) dually and it's not a 4x4.

I lobbied against it (I am a cummins bigot) but he is a phord (gas motor) person. I also lobbied against the dually, he will understand when it comes time to rotate the tires.

We did go out and look at chevy 2500HDLT duramax with a 5 speed allison automatic which I really liked until I got to crawlin around under the truck and found a bunch of fresh oil on the transmission fluid pan and the cross beam just behind that. I probably shouldn't have been to worried about that considering that the oil filter is just forward of that and when installed is horizontal to the ground (which I think is stupid).

The truck looks great, no dents or scratches and only 141,000 miles. It has a goose neck hitch but he needs a 5th wheel hitch. It's also a crew cab with a long bed and west coast mirrors.

He's expecting upward to 20 miles per gallon, my truck is making 23.4 mpg and will do better then that when the weather warms up.

He's got a new camper that is significantly heavier then the one he had which is why he made the move. When he told me bought the truck I was like whateves, the deed is done and told him he needs to get his fanny on the Internets and learn how to keep a diesel engine alive.

Did I mention that I do not like this truck and would not have bought it?

My brother just bought another old Chevy Blazer with 35-inch tires and an enormous lift kit.

Driveway is starting to look a little full... two trucks and three cars.

I have a bigger driveway. :whistling:

You should see the guys two houses down.  Every weekend, it looks like a Superbowl party of cars.

I think we can fit two or three more vehicles.

I'd like to watch Chris_ try to tow 14,000 pounds + with his brothers blazer.

Just sayin.

If you don't understand diesels you wont get it.

Does your brothers blazer have a diesel?

Does that lift kit give it some advantage?

I'm just asking in case I need to get an 8 inch lift.

Yeah, that's the stupid thing that I see on the cummins channel on you tube.

Diesel trucks make lousy mudders but I'd bet that If we hooked these trucks up on asphalt I'd drag that blazer around the block.

And for that matter my truck would beat your brothers truck in a stand up drag race.

Blah. And my truck gets better mileage. His gas is cheaper though.

Back in the 60's, my sister introduced me to one of the doctors she worked with. We got to talking and the next thing you know, we're outside the hospital looking at his diesel conversion. It was a 49 Cadillac limo with a 3 cylinder DETROIT (371). It was slanted because it had come out of a small bus. You could hear him coming a mile away.... :lmao:.

Owned several diesel duallies, FORD and GM, straight and auto, no big problems form any of them even at 300 thousand plus miles.

Can't comment on the ALLISON transmission in a pickup but the ALLISONs in my heavy equipment were great transmissions.

I have one of these in my driveway, except it has a bit more rust and primer on it.  It's my BF's daily driver..

It never used to be that way. Fuel was always about the same or a few cents less.
