The mechanic checked it out; the previous owner had installed, or his mechanic had installed, some sort of automatic shutoff.

You have a Ford, you poor thing!!! Fords are notoriously temperamental and prickly and not much can be done about that. Sorry, I know car problems are a MAJOR hassle.

Never heard of that but the only thing I know about cars is how to put gas in and drive em.

I had a Toyota MR2 Turbo sportscar and I installed a turbo timer to let the oil in the turbocharger cool down. It was also good on cold morning; set it for 5 min. or so and let it warm up the inside of the car. The great thing about it was I could take the key out and if anyone tried to put it in gear to drive it the engine would kill.
